The ever-growing need for good communication skills in English has created a huge demand for English teaching

and
learning around the world. Millions of learner today want to achieve a good command of English. Employers too insist
that their employees have good oral skill and fluency in English is a pre-requisite for success and advancement in
many fields of employment. The necessity for an appropriate learning and teaching English methodology is therefore
as strong as ever.
The reading text "Computer Assisted Language Learning and Teaching" (CALL) is an overall picture of the impact and
influence of information technology on foreign language learning and teaching. Interactive computer network allows
students to test the result of learning without the risk of being punished for any mistake. Learning does not have to be a
pressure. So CALL can reduce the anxiety of students and turn out to be a positive side of teaching and learning. The
teacher can broadcast the teaching materials on the computer's screen. All of the students can see them clearly.
Students can choose an English teaching program they are interested in and learn on their pace of learning. The
English learning program will serve student's desired goal of learning. In one sense, students easily get the individual
attention from the computer. The teacher can assign a pair of students to practice the activities with each other.
Teacher will offer more powerful teaching tools with the aids of computer technology. In this reading text, the author
has also given the roles of using CALL to teach listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation and thinking skills
and techniques how computers are used in the language class. CALL activities and programs - a great source in the
foreign language classroom when the principles are chosen to apply to teaching and learning process. Especially, the
internet basics and web source helps me to download the necessary materials to my computer and use them at any
time. The ideal CALL tasks which promote interaction that is both collaborative and cooperative, involving negotiation
and peer assistance, offer students an authentic context for communication that is motivating and encourage learning. I
suppose that the development of internet will assist teachers in selecting right methods that make optimal use of the
student's time. Conversation online is another solution for practicing discussion and argument. Synchronous online oral
tasks and internet conferences like Skype are valuable experiences to the students and provide permanent records of
oral development. Moreover, communication online is changing not only the nature of the output but also the student's
socio-cultural, visual and audio perception of th input. CALL appears to be the best choice for training in pronunciation.
Throughout the internet, non-native students have an opportunity to meet and discuss with foreigners to improve the
communication ability in English as well as open their minds to real world.
I have already read the text "How I learned English in the pre-Internet age and why you can do it faster" by Tomasz P.
Szynalski. That is a wonderful reading text. The author has told me his story of how he learned English in 1993. At that
time, no one heard about the internet . Dictionaries were just books. Software dictionaries were a novelty. He got
motivated and studied on his own. He boosted his English with reading and SuperMemo. Finally, he achieved writing
and speaking fluency. Actually, he is a hard-working bee. I admire his patience and determination. I have learnt much
helpful knowledge and new experience from him that I have never known before. For instance, the ways to read
English text if you want to improve your English: reading for content to get the main idea of the text as quickly as
possible and with as little effort as possible, the "pause and think" technique will make me stop before I write one
sentence and look it up instead of making a careless mistake, reading everywhere is a good way to save my time and
energy. That is great!. I realize that studying online always plays an important role in my learning process. Internet is
convenient for everyone. I have chance to find the favourite English language books, enjoyable movies, TV shows,
websites, etc...My teacher and I will be able to e-mail each other in English much better though we live in two different
countries. I also will be able to post my questions and comments to discuss forums and blogs. In this way, I can share
my own feelings and ideas with many people all over the world. After that, the readers will give me useful advances.
From these suggestions, I can draw experience for the next article. I think Iam luckier than Tomasz P. Szynalski
because Iam living in a technological era, so privilege belongs to those we should make full use of it. Learning through
internet is put forward to upgrade your English promptly. We should be aware of the fast development of internet and
discover the lastest application in our teachinh and learning contexts.
I highly appreciate thse two reading texts. Those are impressive texts. They help me to understand more about CALL
and find out the methods how to learn English effectively. These good lessons are worth remembering in my mind.
Due to restricted knowledge and limited time in study and research, there are still some mistakes and some points
have not been mentioned on yet in my assignment. I hope to get good comments, opinions of teachers, students and
all those who care about this assignment so that it is more completed. Finally, Iam sincerely grateful to my teacher,
Associate Professor Jeff Lebow who creates me to the opportunity to express my feedbacks and opinions to these two
reading texts.
Once again, thank you very much for your helps and kind understandings!

Best regards,
