As the new vice president of
basketball operations for the Los
Angeles Clippers, Kevin Eastman
has a lot to deal with. Theres free
agency, Donald Sterling and the
upcoming season.
And yet, Eastman still thinks
about his basketball coach at Haddonfield Memorial High School
when he needs to make a decision.
Dave Wiedeman has been one
of the biggest influences for me,
Eastman said. In all the positions Ive had, as a head coach in
college, assistant coach with the
(Boston) Celtics and Clippers and
even now as the vice president, I
use a lot of what he taught me.
Eastman grew up in Haddonfield, where he says he loved the
safe environment.
I was able to walk down to the
courts at the middle school and
shoot some hoops alone, Eastman said. That really helped me

moving forward and gave me a lot

of freedom that allowed me to
grow as a player and a person.
During one of these trips to the
courts, Eastman ran into someone he had never seen before. Behind Wedgewood Swim Club,
Eastman was shooting baskets
when a car pulled up to the
courts. A car he didnt recognize
and a man stepped out who he
didnt recognize either. It was the
new varsity basketball coach:
David Wiedeman.
I was shocked when I realized
who it was, Eastman said. As a
young kid, I never expected the
high school coach to come out to
the rec courts to watch kids play,
but there he was. Thats a story
that has taught me more than
anything else during my life.
The lesson Eastman says he
gained was to make the first
move to not sit back and wait for
things to come to you, but to
reach out and be the initiator.

Ruth B. Shaffer (nee Backus),
wife for 48 years of the late Lowell, beloved mother of Laura Egberts (Herb) of Bellmawr, JoAnn

Bredeck (Ron) of Sicklerville,

Karen Herman (Tom) of Haddonfield and John (Tina) of Medford,
cherished grandmother of eight,
one of which predeceased her,
and loving great grandmother of
five, one of which predeceased
her.
Mrs. Shaffer graduated from
Wooster College in 1948. She was
the owner of The Frame Corner
in Barrington for 20 years along
with her daughter, Karen. She
had been a member of the Barrington Business Association, the
Haddon Fortnightly and the First
Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield. She spent many hours volunteering at Contact and Interfaith Caregivers. Mrs. Shaffer, an
avid bridge player and bowler,
continued to do these activities
until very recently. She was
known by all for her compassion
and kindness.

Veteran honored as last survivor

of Canvey Island plane crash

The Sun
On June 21, nearly 200 people
gathered at Canvey Island to
honor the crews of two B-17 Flying Fortresses, which collided
over the river Thames on June 19,
1944. At the center of this remembrance ceremony was Voorhees
World War II veteran Richard W.
Andrews, who is the last survivor
of the crash.
As the years have passed, I just
happened to be hanging on to the
end, Andrews said. Its an
honor to be remembered and it
was an honor to serve with those
men who lost their lives that day.
Andrews was born and raised
in Haddonfield, graduating from
Haddonfield Memorial High
School in 1941, before hitchhiking

Delay the judgment of teachers

PARCC testing needs to be ironed out first, before we hold our teachers to results
f you have a child in public school,
chances are that you are well-informed as to what the Partnership
for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC, is.
As a quick refresher, its a new online platform that students in grades
four through eight will take instead of
their former state standardized tests.
PARCC aligns with the new Common
Core State Standards, which has more
rigorous benchmarks for student
learning.
No longer will students take the traditional tests we grew up with a
Scantron form that we used a No. 2
pencil to complete. Instead, students
will take math and language arts tests
completely online.
PARCC testing begins in the fall at
public schools throughout New Jersey,
apparently whether local school districts are technologically ready for it
or not. Some of the districts we cover
in both Princeton and South Jersey
have expressed concern about their

readiness for administering the tests.

Thats a problem. But, as these same
districts have said, they dont have a
choice. The PARCC testing is signed
into state law, and there is no turning
back at this point.
One of the more concerning aspects
of PARCC, though, isnt how its administered or the content of the tests
themselves; its the fact that the results of the tests will be given major
weight in the judgment of teachers
and administrators.
The formula in place says student
progress on state testing will make up
30 percent of an evaluation for teachers in grades four through eight.
While we arent against using test results to judge teachers, at least in part,
we dont believe that now is the time to

dive head-first into holding them accountable for testing for which their
district might not be prepared.
The state Assembly passed a bill last
week that would delay this judgment
on teachers until the kinks are ironed
out. The state Senate delayed a vote,
opting instead to wait for direction
from Gov. Christie, whos expected to
issue an executive order reducing the
weight of the test results in teacher
evaluations in the short term.
We back this thinking 100 percent.
Having some objective measurers
such as test results to evaluate teachers is valuable.
In the past, all anyone had to go on
was subjective matters. But giving
such heavy weight to test results when
there are so many issues surrounding
the administration of that test is unfair.
Its the states job to ensure its
school districts are up to speed on
PARCC before it starts using it against
our teachers.

Gilbert, fellow Syracuse graduate, in 1941.
She was commissioned as a second lieutenant. in 1943 and her first assignment
was battalion commander, MCWR recruit
Training Camp in LeJune, N.C. Her sec-

ond assignment was assistant to the commanding officer, Parris Island Air Station,
S.C., and her third assignment was CO
Headquarters Squadron Cherry Point Air
Base, N.C., where she received the rank of
captain. Upon Gilberts return from his
overseas deployment with the U.S. Army,
she resigned her commission. She received a letter of commendation from the
Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps for
her service. In 1955, Claire and Gilbert
moved to Haddonfield, where she lived for
the next 39 years. In 1962, Claire began a

30-year career at the Bancroft School of

Haddonfield. She was director of rehabilitation and clinical services and in 1963 the
N.J. State Rehabilitation Association honored her as Rehabilitation Counselor of
the Year. Claire was also an active member of Moorestown Rotary, the Tavistock
Country Club, Haddonfield D.A.R., the NJ
Association of Mayflower Descendants
and the William Bradford Compact.

To help senior citizens beat the heat this

season, the Camden
County
Freeholder
Board is once again distributing free fans.
Camden County residents age 60 and older
with an income of
$25,000 or less are eligible to receive a fan. There are currently
more than 100 fans ready for immediate
distribution with more on the way.
Many senior citizens are living in
homes without air conditioning or other
means of cooling. When temperatures
rise to dangerous levels, these seniors
should open windows to release trapped
air and use a fan to circulate the air in a
home. This not only makes it more comfortable, but more importantly makes it
safer.
During the hottest days of summer,
senior citizens should wear lightweight
clothing and avoid strenuous activity in
the hot sun or in other hot areas. If you
must be out in the sun, wear a head covering. A wide-brimmed hat or visor will not
only protect your head from intense rays
of the sun, it will also provide a shield for
your eyes. Those taking regular medication should consult with their physician.
Some medications cause an adverse reaction in hot weather. Drink plenty of nonalcoholic liquids, warm and cool. Because
the body loses fluids in the heat, drinking
lots of liquids helps to avoid dehydration.
The national weather service has already issued heat advisories this year.
They do this when the combination of hot
temperatures and high humidity become
dangerous and can cause heat related illnesses, especially in senior citizens.

The early warning

signs of heat stress are
decreased energy, slight
loss of appetite, faintness, light-headedness
and nausea. People experiencing these symptoms
should go to a cool environment, drink liquids,
remove excess clothing
and rest.
The Camden County Health Officer is
responsible for issuing Heat Alerts. When
this happens, municipalities are notified
that it would be appropriate to open municipal cooling centers to the public. Each
municipality in Camden County has identified and is responsible for activating its
own municipal cooling center. Please contact your local municipality for the location of the cooling center closest to you.
For more than a decade we have
worked with senior organizations and
municipal emergency management coordinators to distribute fans to seniors.
Please take the proper precautions to ensure that this summer is safe and enjoyable.

north to work at Republic, where
he hoped to work on airplanes.
I was always fascinated with
airplanes, he said. As a kid, I
built model airplanes, and when I
got a little older, I used to head
over to Moorestown airport,
where a girl would take me for
rides.
So, after high school, I knew
that I wanted to do something
with them.
Andrews fulfilled that dream,
working on P-47 Thunderbolts at
Republic before being drafted for
the military.
After a six-month deferment
that allowed him to continue his
work on the airplanes, Andrews
made his way overseas.
Andrews was set to fly 30 missions during his three months of
combat. It was on mission 29 that
the fateful plane crash happened.

Our own plane crashed into

us, Andrews said. And, as luck
would have it, I traded my usual
spot on that mission to fly in the
tail, which was the reason I survived.
The crash killed 11 members of
the flight team.
The remembrance ceremony
on June 19 honored all the members of the Heavenly Body flight
crews, which was the name of the
planes. A candle was lit for each
of the crew, with a last candle lit
for Andrews, the only man left
standing.
I couldnt attend the ceremony, Andrews said.
My daughter Barbara and my
son-in-law went for me, though,
and opened the ceremony with a
letter I wrote.
In the letter, Andrews thanked
his crewmembers and those in attendance for honoring him.

While the crash may have been

a traumatic experience, Andrews
continued to fly after the war,
going on to buy his own planes
and to teach at a variety of flight
schools.
After the war, I actually moved
to Voorhees to be close to the Echelon airport, he said.
I was taking over the construction company my dad and
grandfather owned, but I wanted
to be close to an airport so I could
still fly.
Andrews also got involved with
the community, becoming president on the Board of Education in
Voorhees. But, he could never
shake his love for flying, and
eventually, he passed it on to his
daughter.
My daughter actually is a
pilot and owns her own planes,
too, he said. She even named it
Heavenly Body III.

Haddonfield resident Traci

Dunham recently published a
childrens book, The Oysters Secret, that is aimed at doing more
than just entertaining.
As a parent, I have noticed
that the majority of books written for children ages 3 to 8 dont
have any moral teachings, Dunham said. I want to write books
that have a message.
But, while Dunham sees the
importance of getting her message across, she also understands
the stories must be fun to read.
You need to find something
that children can relate to, she
said. I knew the message I was
trying to get across, but I needed
to make it fun and interesting for
children.

Secret is inner beauty, and Dunham was wrestling with how to
create a childrens story out of
that idea. It
took a trip to
the beach to
put it all together.
Im originally from

to the beach,
for some reason I started thinking about oysters. The oysters
pearl is hidden from view, but
when you look inside, you see the
beauty, she said. Thats exactly
what I wanted to showcase in the
story.

Dunham also draws from her

experiences as a parent when
writing. She has noticed that bullying has become an increasingly
harsh reality in childrens lives,
and she feels her stories may give
children an outlet.
I see how devastating it can be
for kids, she said. All I can hope
is that maybe giving them stories
that show them theyre not alone
will make it easier.
Dunham has also started writing a second book, My Sister
Luloo and Me, which should be
published some time next year. In
this story, Dunham is tackling the
issue of handicapped children,
which is close to her heart, as her
daughter is handicapped.
Just like The Oysters Secret,
Im trying to tackle an issue that
is real and prevalent in childrens
lives, she said. The handicapped issue is something that
most children dont encounter
until they get to school, so Im
hoping this book might expose
them to it earlier.
The story focuses on two sisters, one of whom is handicapped, and is told through the
voice of the sister who is not
handicapped.
The message in My Sister
Luloo and Me is more straight
forward, Dunham said. I want
to show children that handicapped kids can do all the things
normal children can do.
Dunham plans to keep working
on this story over the next few
months, but in the meantime, she
will continue to promote The
Oysters Secret.
She has three different book
signings scheduled in Haddonfield over the summer. On July 12,
Dunham will be in front of The
Book Swap on Kings Highway
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On July 24,
she will be at the Haddonfield Library during childrens story
time at 10:30 a.m. And on Aug. 7,
she will be at The Rhinoceros
from 5 to 8 p.m.
A face painter will also be at
the Aug. 7 book signing from 6 to 7
p.m.

He didnt have to come out to
the courts and watch us play,
Eastman says. He could have
waited in the gym for everyone.
But, instead, he made the first
move, which made us all work
harder and have more respect for
him.
Eastman was on the 1972-1973
Haddonfield basketball team that
won the state championship. And
while he would go on to play basketball for more coaches at Richmond and then at the pro level for
a year, Eastman says Wiedeman
was always first in his mind.
I can safely say that I respect
every coach Ive ever had and
been around, but Wiedeman was
the best, he said.
Eastman has used the lessons
he learned from Wiedeman in the
NBA. He cites the Celtics as a
prime example of the teachings
he learned in the HMHS gym.

The Celtics championship

team is a great example of what I
learned from Wiedeman, he
said.
Its about the connection
coaches have with players. I tried
to have a personal relationship
with the players and with Doc
Rivers, too. And thats what led
that team to the championship.
Not their ability on the court, but
the bonds they forged. And all
that comes right from Wiedeman.
As vice president of the Clippers, Eastman will no longer have
the same relationship with the
players.
His new position will see him
play a bigger role in management, but even still, he sees opportunities to use what he
learned in Haddonfield.
What were looking at this
season is tough. We have a lot on
our plates, but we need to simplify things. If we can find some
good complimentary players to
mesh together, theres no reason
we cant have another tremendous season.

Freeholders honor
39 veterans
The Camden County Freeholder Board honored 39 veterans by
presenting them with the Camden County Service Medal during
a ceremony at the Oaklyn American Legion Post.
The Camden County Military
Service Medal was created by the
Freeholder Board to honor the
men and women who have made
Camden County proud by serving
their country with honor and
valor, said Freeholder Deputy
Director Ed McDonnell, liaison to
the Camden County Office of Veterans Affairs.
These brave men and women
who have proudly worn the uniform of our country are being
honored for their dedication to
our nation and their undying patriotism.
In addition, Samuel Mario
Benedetti, 92 of Audubon, will be
presented with the World War II

Victory Medal during the ceremony. Benedetti entered the United

States Navy on Aug. 25, 1944, and
was released from active duty on
April 16, 1946.
The machinist mate first class
was called back to active duty on
Aug. 31, 1950, and was released on
Jan. 21, 1952, during the Korean
War.
According to the U.S. Veterans
Administration, about every two
minutes, a personal experience of
World War II departs this earth.
As the greatest generation continues to age, the men and women
who fought and won the war are
now entering their 90s. We honor
all veterans, but because of the
significant loss of approximately
555 service members a day
throughout the nation, it is imperative for us to honor and
praise our heroes that served in
