IES written test is frst stage in IES exams. The written test comprises of two tests
General Paper
The General paper consists consists of below sections
Antonyms
Synonyms
Comprehension
Sentence Improvement
Spotting Errors
Fill in the blanks simple sentences
General Knowledge
General Aptitude and General Awareness
Good Knowledge of English language is very important to get good marks in General paper.Candidates should not underestimate English
section.Generally it is found that candidates dedicate all time to technical subjects overlooking General paper. This does not serve the
purpose. You should no doubt prepare well for your technical subjects but until and unless you clear this paper you have no chance.
So it is wise enough to dedicate sometime to this paper.Candidates not so strong in English language should concentrate much on it.The
grammar part should be taken care of seriously.Antonyms and Synonyms require good amount of reading but grammar section needs little
work and is covers more marks.
Apart from English language General paper covers general awareness as well.General Awareness is very broad area. You can get
questions from Geography,Indian Constitution,History and other areas as well. This is most challenging part of the exams. It is very difcult to
prepare for this part in few days. You need to keep in touch with events around you constantly.
You should read periodicals and newspapers for this part of general paper. This part is very scoring and less time consuming.Solving this
part fast will give you enough time to invest in Comprehension and Spotting error questions of English section. So plan the sections well.
Engineering subjects paper
Two objective papers on your trade. For example of you are appearing for Electrical Engineering then you will have to appear for two
electrical engineering objective questions papers. The question paper is multiple choice questions. The two papers cover most of of your
BTECH syllabus.Normally you can see few questions from every major topic of your engineering discipline.
The questions are mixture of easy ones, medium ones and tough ones.It is not good idea to get stuck on one question and waste time.So
mark the question and move ahead.I have seen few very easy questions as well.So candidates should be wise in question selection.
To prepare for Engineering subjects paper it is best to read your theory and then solve practice paper.Solving practice paper will give you
insight of your preparation level. After solving practice papers for few months you can move ahead and solve IES question papers of past
year.
It is good idea to solve them with watch in front so as to check your speed as well. After solving the paper analyze the question you made
mistake on.Then identify the sections these questions belong to and revise the concepts. It is better to retry the questions after revising the
concepts.
Then you are good to try other previous year question paper or try out other sample papers.
IES Written Test planning
As mentioned above IES written test comprises of General Ability and Professional knowledge. There is one paper on General Ability and
two paper on Professional knowledge.Candidates focus heavily on professional knowledge and do tend to ignore general paper.
But you should keep in mind that every marks count in competitive exams. It does not matter whether you are getting it in professional paper
or general paper.Marks in distributed in ratio of 2:1 (2 professional and 1 general) so preparation should also be in this ratio (more or less).
Candidates should focus on easy parts where they are good at and can score easily. After that they should gradually move to other
parts.Considering huge syllabus of IES it becomes difcult to prepare every part equally well. But it is good to have fair knowledge of
diferent sections.
Sometimes you get simple questions from some sections. You will not able to solve them if entire section is left.So it is better to have general
knowledge of most sections.
