Process 1. Thesis Supervisor Selection: Students should interact with possible supervisors and discuss possible research areas for their M.Tech thesis. After nding a supervisor, get the Research Area and The- sis Supervisor form signed by the prospective supervisor. A student may have more than one supervisor. Students should contact the specialization coordinator in case of difculties. It is not necessary that the supervisor should belong to a particular spe- cialization area. 2. Panel Formation: A monitoring panel consisting of the supervisor(s) and one faculty member (Subject Expert) will be formed to monitor the students progress and assign the grades for research units after the stage examinations. 3. Stage Examinations: There will be three stage examinations, scheduled as given in the Timeline below, one per semester. Students are required to submit a report to the Subject expert few days prior to the actual presentation. Stage-1 presentation will be used to assign grades for RS801, Stage-2 for RS802 & RS803, and Stage-3 for RS804, RS805, RS806, RS807. 4. Thesis Submission: Once the student has completed all the research units with S grades, he/she should submit the supervisor-approved thesis on the M. Tech. web portal. The thesis will be sent to an examiner (different from Subject Expert). Examination process is expected to take 7-10 days. Examiner will submit their detailed report, with one of the following recommendation: ACCEPT ACCEPT with modications - The modications made have to be separately documented and signed by the supervisor. The Thesis examiner may verify the changes made during the defense. RESUBMIT - Thesis to be examined again after modications. 5. Open Defense: If the thesis is accepted, an open thesis defense will be scheduled. Supervisor will coordinate the dates in consultation with the examiner. Evaluation panel for the open defense shall consist of the supervisor, the Subject Expert and the Thesis examiner. This panel will evaluate the open defense. Student will be given S or X grade for RS850 (M.Tech. Thesis course) based on the outcome of thesis defense. If the student gets an S grade in RS850, he/she can submit the thesis after nal modications. Bound copy of the thesis can then be submitted to Resource Center after approval by the supervisor. 1 Timeline Sr. No. Process To be completed by 1 Thesis Supervisor Selection April 2014. 2 Panel Formation July 2014. 4 Stage - 1 Examination 28 th July - 1 st August 2014. 5 Stage - 2 Examination November, 2014 a . 6 Stage - 3 Examination March-April 2015 a . 7 Thesis Submission (for review) May 2015. 8 Open Defense May-July 2015. a Exact dates will be informed later. 2
