A wave on a string is described by the equation y = (4.2
mm)cos(3000t ! 0.45x) where t is measured in s and x is
measured in mm.
What is the frequency of the wave?
What is the wavelength of the wave?
A wave on a string has a speed of 340 m/s. If the tension in
the string is 150 N and its length is 2.8 m, what is the mass
of the string?
A violin string is 35 cm long and has a fundamental
standing wave frequency of 440 Hz. If the tension is 75 N,
what is the mass of the string?
A sound wave in air has a frequency of 220 Hz. What is its
wavelength? (Use 343 m/s as the speed of sound in air.)
The sound intensity level 20 m from a particular
loudspeaker is 70 dB. Estimate the total power emitted by
the speaker. Assume it emits spherical waves.
Consider an organ pipe 1.2 m long that is closed at one
end and open at the other. What is the fundamental
frequency of the pipe?
Two sound waves of frequency 80 Hz and 83 Hz are
played. How many beats per second are heard?
A siren has a frequency of 750 Hz when it is at rest,
whereas it has an apparent frequency of 800 Hz when it is
moving toward a stationary observer. What is the speed of
the siren in the latter case?
The average speed of a spacecraft while in orbit is about
8900 m/s. How far does the spacecraft travel during a
mission that lasts 7.5 days?
A tourist accidentally drops a penny from the observation
deck of the 320 m Empire State Building. What is the
pennys impact velocity? (Neglecting air resistance)
Estimate the average force exerted by a shot-putter on a
7.0 kg shot if the shot is moved through a distance of 2.8 m
and is released with a speed of 13 m/s.
A world-class sprinter can reach a top speed (of about 10.9
m/s) in the first 16.0 m of a race. (a) What is the average
acceleration of this sprinter? (b) How long does it take her
to reach that speed?
A stone of mass 0.3 kg is tied to a string of length 0.75 m
and is swung in a horizontal circle with speed v. The string
has a breaking-point force of 50 N. What is the largest
value v can have without the string breaking?
Calculate the effective value of g, the acceleration of
gravity, at 6400 m, above the Earths surface. Note that the
mass of the Earth is 5.98 x 10
24
kg and the radius of the
Earth is 6.38 x 10
6
m.

A 1400 kg sports car accelerates from rest to 95 km/h in
7.4 s. What is the average power delivered by the engine?
A 7700-kg box car traveling 18 m/s strikes a second car.
The two stick together and move off with a speed of 5.0 m/
s. What is the mass of the second car?
A car engine is initially rotating at 200 rad/s. It is then
turned off and takes 3.0 s to come to a complete stop.
What is the angular acceleration (unit: rad/s) of the engine?
Assume acceleration is constant.
A Consider a merry-go-round that has the form of a disc
with radius 5.0 m and mass 100 kg. If three children, each
of mass 20 kg, sit on the outer edge of the merry-go-round,
what is the total moment of inertia? Note that a moment of
inertia for the merry-go-round is I = (1/2)mR

A ball A baseball (mass 0.14 kg, radius 3.7 cm) is spinning
with an angular velocity of 60 rad/s. What is its rotational
kinetic energy? The moment of inertia for a solid ball is
(2/5)mR

.
The displacement of a harmonic oscillator is given by y =
9.4 sin(15t), where the units of y are meters and t is
measured in seconds. What is its maximum velocity?
A 1.60-m-long steel piano wire has a diameter of 0.20 cm.
How great is the tension in the wire if it stretches 0.25 cm
when tightened? (Note that the value of Youngs modulus
for steel is 2.0 x 10
