Electromechanical Multiple and
Single Position Switches Construction
Construction of electro-
mechanical multiple and
single position switches
A maintenance-free, self-
lubricating slide bushing
assures reliable function of
the switches.
These switches are available
as a DIN 43693 or
DIN 43697 standard hous-
ing. Additional form factors
can be found in the following
pages.
A telescoping plunger
mechanism prevents ex-
cessive loads on the switch
elements, extends its life and
protects the plunger from
sticking. A rigid plunger must
be used in conjunction with
safety switches.
.6
A highly elastic, wear-free
Viton membrane serves as
a hermetic seal between the
plunger mechanism and the
switch chamber. This dual
chamber principle permits an
enclosure rating of IP 67.
The seals are a critical
element for the quality of our
products. This is why we
only use Viton for our mem-
brane, cover gaskets and
O-rings. Compared with the
previously used high-quality
NBR material, this material
offers improved resistance to
aggressive media over a
large temperature range and
under pressure.
Snap and creep switches
are available as changeover
type, with self-cleaning
contacts. Mixed switch types
in the same housing are also
possible.
The creep switch opens
and closes as a function of
the speed at which it is
actuated.
The snap switch opens
regardless of the speed of its
actuation.
Function indication for
switch positions with LED is
optional.
Standard configuration:
metric threads per EN 50262
or S 80/S 90 connector
(optional).
The threads for already
installed connectors are
sealed.
To connect with distribution
boxes, switches with
S 4/S 49 connection are
recommended. The
connection can be made
directly when using 24 V DC.
For multiple switch positions
a corresponding number
of connectors or larger
connectors with a greater
number of pins is used.
If the connector option is not
ordered, the cable can be
connected directly to the
switch element using a user-
provided metric cable fitting.

Switch elements for
standard applications
Switches for standard appli-
cations with no safety func-
tion are equipped with snap
switch elements. Our line
includes the following types:
Snap switch element
BSE 30.0

75/76/77
Single-pole changeover
Switch elements for
safety functions
The switch elements for
safety functions such as
E-STOP and travel limiting
have forced-opening
contacts that meet
DIN EN 60204-1/VDE 0113.
We can supply the following
types:
Creep switch element
BSE 61
normally-closed, double
interrupting, forced opening
Snap switch element
BSE 85
Dual changeover, normally-
open with snap function,
normally-closed forced
opening, double-interrupting,
galvanically isolated.
The right switch element
for every application
The switch element deter-
mines the switching behavior
and the switching safety in
an emergency situation.
Balluff offers switch elements
for various functions.
Switching characteristics
When selecting the plunger
and switch element, the
typical switching characteris-
tics of each should be taken
into account.
Switch elements for
applications with low
currents
For currents 10...100 mA
snap switch types BSE 73/
74/75/76 are recommended.
A special contact design
and the use of gold as the
contact material allows low
current levels to be reliably
switched.
Note for solder
and screw terminations
When soldering the connec-
tions, use a low-wattage
soldering iron with max.
40 W up to 400 C, since
otherwise the switch ele-
ment could be damaged or
destroyed.

Protection Circuits
... AC or AC/DC sensors
are often operated with a
relay or contactor as the
load.
AC switching devices
(contactors/relays) create a
significantly higher load
(6...10 rated current) when
they are first energized as
compared with their static
operation due to the fact
that the core is still open.
The static value of the load

switch elements using
pulsing or thermal short
circuit protec-tion circuits.
The output stage is thereby
protected against overload
and short circuit. The

the contactor is prevented
for mechanical or electrical
reasons from fully closing,
result in an overload. This is
where the overload
protection comes into play.
It is designed with a time
delay, and its thresh-old is
just slightly higher than the
max. permissible Ie.
A response (i. e. turn-off) is
delayed depending on the
magnitude of the overload
by more than 20 milliseconds.
This ensures that properly
working relays and con-
tactors can be switched
normally, while defective
devices will not destroy the
Balluff switch elements.
The short circuit/overload
protection is generally of a
bi-stable design, which
means that it must be reset
by turning off the supply
voltage.

Series wiring ... a time delay (e. g. ready
delay) can occur. The
number of connectable
switch elements is limited
by the total voltage drop
(sum of all Ud).
With 2-wire switch elements
it is limited by the addition
of the minimum supply
voltages.
With 3-wire DC switches the
load capacity of the output
state represents an additio-
nal limitation, since the no-
load current of all switches
is added to the rated
operational current Ie.
The startup delay tv is the
startup delay of one sensor
(number of sensors n1).
... of switch elements with
LED it is recommended that
the outputs of the individual
switches be decoupled using
diodes (as shown).
This prevents all LED's from
turning on when the output
stage of one switch is active.
Parallel wiring
3-wire DC switch elements 2-wire DC switch elements
(DC/AC/all-current)
3-wire DC switch elements 2-wire DC switch elements
Parallel wiring of 2-wire
switch elements is
not recommended, since
spurious pulses can be
caused by the ready delay
when the oscillators are
building up.

General installation
guidelines
condensation may occur
in metal tubes and pipes.
Always use drip loops
under such conditions.
4. Hot metal chips can melt
or cut the outer jacket of
multi-conductor cables.
Under such conditions we
recommend use of a
protective tube around the
cable.
5. Use care when wiring the
snap switch elements.
Please use the right tool!
6. Take care not to change
the factory setting when
adjusting the mounting
screws of the switch
elements.
1. IP 67 protection is only
assured if the installation
is water- and oil tight.
Threaded cable fittings
with integrated O-rings
and cable seals must be
used.
2. Please ensure that unused
cable entries are closed
off using appropriate
threaded plugs with
integrated O-ring.
3. The outer jacket of a
multi-conductor cable can
become damaged, thus
allowing liquids to enter
the interior of the switch.
When installing in wet
areas, always use "drip
loops". If excessive
temperature fluctuations
occur in the application,
7. Carefully check the
installation dimensions of
mechanical multiple
position switches and
cams. The plungers must
be actuated with the
correct travel to ensure
optimum life expectancy.
8. Dowel pins can be used
to fix the mounting
position of mechanical
multiple position switches.
9. Covers on larger flange
areas should be tightened
down in the order shown
below to ensure even
stress and optimum
sealing.
Unless specially designated,
the products described in
this catalog may not be used
in applications where the
safety of persons depends
on function of the device
(not safety components
according to EC Directives).
AC/DC sensors are not
permitted to be operated
directly on the utility grid.
