PRO: The capitalist society enhaces personal freedom. Take a look in the past : Capitalism, as defined economic system, evolved during the ! th and " th centuries, #ith the rise of merchant capitalism and mercantilism. This #as an era #hen colonial po#ers such as $ritain, %rance, &pain and Portugal sent their e'plorers out into the #orld to discover ne# sea routes and ne# lands #hich could be traded #ith. %eudal lords #ere being rapidly replaced by merchants and traders. Capitalism #orks perfectly #ith democracy and #ith human nature itself. &ocialism may sound (ust and e)uitable on paper, but socialist countries have decayed over the years as a result of human greed and corruption. *fter the death of feudalism in the +th century, a choice #as presented to the #orld: socialism, capitalism, the Third ,ay, or another obscure alternative- &ocialism sounded great on paper, but never really #orked accordingly and the most #ell kno#n group #ithin the third #ay #as the .a/i party, #hether the rest of the movement liked it or not. 0ou have the freedom to select any career you #ant and study everything you #ant in school1 build your o#n beliefs1 you can choose anything from the #idest variety ever seen in history1 One of the greatest thngs about capitalism is that it #orks perfectly #ith democracy. The most important )uality needed for development of the human being, or for that matter any being, is the ability to think and make decisions on one2s o#n. 3o#ever, it is true that if people are told #hat to do day and night, they do not learn as much. They do not have the opportunity to make mistakes and suffer the conse)uences, and they generally do not think very much. *s a result, they do not develop as fast mentally or spiritually. The reason is that learning to think clearly and carefully, and suffering the conse)uences of one2s actions and behavior, are critical parts of mental and spiritual development. 4t is as though the brain is like your muscles. 0ou must use the brain, or lose it, as the saying goes. The brain must be trained to think clearly and practically. ,hen human beings are treated like animals at the /oo 5 fed, housed, free health care, free everything, they tend to languish. This is unfortunate, but it is the truth. 6any parents learn the hard #ay that coddling and spoiling their children by giving them everything (ust does not build character in most children, for e'ample. 4t is the same #ith adults. Coddling, protecting, spoiling, feeling sorry for them at every turn, and providing all of their needs sounds utopian, and is #hy socialistic thinking is so appealing. 4n practice, ho#ever, a balance is needed. 4t is important to protect people, but it is also helpful to allo# them the freedom to act, and thus to fail, at times, and to suffer a little here and there. 74t has been said that democracy is the #orst form of government e'cept all the others that have been tried.8 9,. Churchill: The current President of ;nited &tated $arack Obama is a typical e'ample of a person #ho has achieved the *merican dream. $arack Obama did not start his life #ith a traditional <fortunate circumstance< previous presidents had en(oyed 9e.g. =eorge $ush:. .evertheless he succeeded in transcending his social class, his race etc. and became the president of ;nited &tates2. Thus capitalism provides everyone #ith a fair chance to reach great achievements in their life if they sei/e the opportunities. CO.: &ocialism leads to a more human, e)ual society: 4n a socialist system, individuals are less likely to be held back by their social position. $eing born into an economically deprived family is less likely to hamper an individual2s opportunities, since the gap bet#een rich and poor is not as great as in a capitalist society. *ll individuals have access to a decent education and this gives them more chances in life. The gap bet#een poor and rich countries has never been as great as it is today. ,arren $uffet>s 9declared the st billionaire in 2??@ by the forbes maga/ine: #ealth #as estimated to be a net #orth of appro'imately ;&A!2 billion in 2??@, this #hile one in seven people on earth goes to bed hungry every night and !.BC million children die of starvation and malnutrition every year The absurd ine)uality bet#een people>s #ages is because of the capitalist system, since the capitalist>s only aim is to generate profit there is no reason to keep anything other than a minimum #age for the #orkers. 4n a globali/ed #orld, rich countries can outsource industries to poorer countries #here #orkers #ill not e'pect so high a #age. * capitalist does not care #hether his labourers> living standards are good, acceptable or bad 9although he does #ant to maintain a level #here the labourers #ill not die or rebel:, as long as they deliver the #ork for the lo#est #age possible. Therefore a company CDO can gain an absurd amount of money since he #ill reap all the profit made from all the labourers in his company #hile the lo#est #orker in the hierarchy #ill only earn enough to survive. The ordinary #orker does not have a free choice #hether he #ants to #ork or not since he is at such an inferior bargaining position that he has to accept the capitalist>s offer in order to survive. *ccording to socialism this ine)uality is atrocious, it can by no means be (ustifiable that an ordinary labourer #ho #orks e)ually as hard, or harder than a CDO should struggle for his survival #hile the CDO lives in unimaginable lu'ury. 4n socialism, production and #ages are directed to human needs, there is conse)uently no need to ma'imise profit and thus this gross ine)uality #ould be evened.
