ABSTRACT
TITLE: THE POPULARITY AND ACCEPTANCE OF
CEBUANO-VISAYAN MUSIC AMONG CNU-CAS
STUDENTS

It has been observed that Cebuano-Visayan music is waning and the
invasion of foreign music is even more domi nant than our own music. Thus, t his
study is being conducted to determine the status of Cebuano-Visayan Music
specifically among the students from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) of
Cebu Normal Uni versity. The study used triangulation method: Survey,
Observation and Interview from the randomly selected respondents from all year
levels through conducting survey questionnaires. The study concluded that the
CNU-CAS students are more i ncli ned in listeni ng to foreign music especially
English music. However, the students admitted that the Cebuano-Visayan music
should not be completely neglected. The study evaluated that the courses being
xi

offered by the university also affect the behavior of the students toward exposing
themselves to Cebuano-Visayan music. The media specially the radio has an
important role i n the preservation and promotion of Cebuano-Visayan music. This
study strived to encourage all Cebuanos who have but one great passion and
respect for music and is yet to become the persons behind revi ving the Cebuano
music. The fi ndings of the study may be useful in future studies in revivi ng local
music that goes with strengthening the foundation of cultures and heritage.
