Kinsmen Park was the place to be on July 1 as Strathmore celebrated Canada Day with style. The park was filled with people, with
many citing it as the best turnout in a long time. Left photo: Liam
Flaws, 4, enjoyed the petting zoo, happily chasing after the goats,
sheep and pigs. Top right photo: Nitika Healy, 4, participated in
the relay race hosted by Hope Community Covenant Church. Bottom right photo: Hope Bridges Society had a station set up where
people could step in paint and then walk along a sheet of paper,
leaving their mark. See Page 3 for more photos of the event.

The group looked at the
Muirfield development and
said the wastewater there
could be treated by their
plant and supplement the
needs of Cattleland feedlot
Bio Cluster plant. Similarly
the new housing projects in
Rosebud could utilize such a
system and at the same time
supply nutrients for a Rosebud greenhouse project; and
possibly future agriculture,
or industrial uses could be
developed around Gleichen

The impediment of cost,
delays in Alberta regulation
processes for the smaller
plants, the ability to deal
with population growth and
integration into existing infrastructure were brought
up as problems to be addressed. The group said partnerships could be formed to
overcome some of the barriers and they were meeting
with other municipalities
who were interested in the
systems application for agricultural purposes.

As we get older, our bodies break down alcohol
more slowly. If you combine this with the fact
that body water content also goes down, then a set
amount of alcohol affects an older person much
more than a younger one. Seniors must be very
careful of the amount of alcohol they consume
because it does interact with many drugs and can
make some health conditions like diabetes worse.

Administration for the Town of
Strathmore is anticipating an appeal
to a development permit application
being made for a dog daycare, grooming and training facility. The new
business would be located in the Canal Gardens, which consists of mixed
zoning and is run condominium style,
with several holders.
Half of the owners in the area appear to be okay with the proposed
new business, while it seems as
though the rest are not.
Staff recommended that the application be approved as the applicant has
made a reasonable effort to deal with
some of the issues raised by some of
the co-owners of the property. Some
of the concerns raised include the facility being noticeable from the road,
about barking, and about waste disposal of fecal matter.
The applicant is proposing at the
rear of the building an 8-foot high
chain link fence. On the outside of
that fence would be six foot board
so that fence is opaque, meaning the
dogs wont be able to see people enter
the site, which should help eliminate
some of the barking. The enclosure
itself is 7.5 metres by 30 metres, half
gravel, half grass, and the applicant
uses an enzyme-based cleaner to deal
with smell and any residual effects of
the waste.
Our review of the application indicates that given the location it seems
to be reasonable approach to managing the issue, said Werner Fischer,
with planning and development for
the town.
The owner, who was in attendance
of the June 18 council meeting, said
she will be grooming and running a
doggie daycare, and plans on about
22 dogs in the daycare. It will be a
mix of little and big dogs, with the
two kept in separate rooms. The dogs
will be cycled inside and outside, in
a series of play, rest, feed, and more
play.

There is something out there waiting
waiting to let its microscopic larvae creep onto your boots, onto your
swimming suits, into your fishing cooler and they are hiding in the hidden
corners of your boat. It eats plankton;
it eats toxic chemicals and sucks the
nutrients out of its prey or smothers
them to death. Whole zones of waterways have been polluted by their kind;
they destroy habitats in their wake and
clog up sewer and water pipes. They
are moving north and west towards Alberta.
It is not the monster from the latest
summer horror flick; it is the reality of
the invasive species zebra and quagga
mussels.
Jay White an Alberta professional biologist from Aquality Consulting Services came to Wheatland County council on June 17, to advise the county of
the essential actions needed to keep
our waterways clear of invasive species.
This is one of the biggest threats
facing fresh water economy and ecology, said White.
He said the infestation of these mussels causes over $75 million in damages
to infrastructure each year. They were
originally found in the Great Lakes;
where the species was brought to Canada from continents overseas, hitchhiking in bilge water and on hulls of ships.
It has made its way down waterways
into the eastern United States (U.S.)
and has now been spotted in lakes
in the western U.S. and California regions. Recently, they have been found
in Lake Winnipeg, and the Energy, Resources and Sustainable Development
officials, along with the federal fisheries department, want to see the spread
contained. Alberta, Saskatchewan and
British Columbia are currently clear of
the threat, but officials want to stop the
spread.
Snowbirds are inadvertently carrying them back on boats purchased in
the U.S., or through cross-border recreational activity. Border patrols have

A recognition ceremony was held
on June 20 at Wheatland Elementary
for the students to recognize global
and community organizations for their
combined efforts to help with less fortunate kids in the Dominican Republic.
A project that was led by Joy Muenchraths Grade 3 students contributed
by raising $670 between recycling pop
cans and freezie sales, picking up 6,348
pieces of garbage and a large amount
of donated clothes and school supplies.
The kids in the Dominican Republic will receive school supplies, we
bought a goat for a family through
Free-the-Children and they will also
get part of the $670, said Muenchrath.
Programs such as these show that
the students can be leaders of their
schools, and if they put their minds to
it, they will succeed.
In Social Studies, we do Global Citi-

The second annual silent auction for
the Strathmore Montessori program
held at Chinook Credit Union wrapped
up on June 13.
The auction was a great success, we
raised just over $2,000. We are so grateful to the Credit Union, all the generous
companies and individuals that donated the items for auction and of course
the community for their support, said
Jennifer Ginter, Montessori secretary.
This September will mark the 10th
anniversary for the program, which is
held at Wheatland Elementary School.
The Kindergarten/Grade 1 and the
Grade 2/3 classroom have specially designed manipulative materials to invite
and engage students in learning activities.
A teacher who has been trained in
the Montessori philosophy, which allows students to learn at their own individual pace, guides the students. The
students learn by making discoveries
with the materials, cultivating concentration, motivation, and self-discipline
and create a love of learning.
The Strathmore Montessori Society is
parent run, and a charitable organization. Because it is an alternative program within the Golden Hills School
Division the program receives funding
for teacher salaries, but not for the materials or the Montessori teacher training. The program runs Monday to Friday and will be back in September.

Strathmore Reds
Baseball Club Alaska
bound
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Strathmore Midget AAA Reds mens baseball team is
getting prepared for the international stage as they are playing
in two tournaments. Both the tournaments are taking place
in Kenai and Anchorage, Ala. respectively between July 6-16.
The squad that formed in October has had many fundraisers
to cover the cost for the team to travel to these tournaments.
We are a tournament team so we do not play in any leagues
in Alberta, so most of our tournaments are actually in Montana, said coach Dale Anderson. The Reds travel to Libby,
Mont. a couple of times a year and do two or three tournaments in Alberta.
We usually do the one feature trip every summer and this
summer we are going to two tournaments in Alaska and try
to get fundraising going as early as possible, said Anderson.
The fundraising efforts included a New Years gathering in
Carbon to fundraise the money and they also had outside
sponsorship that graciously donated to cover the cost for the
trip.
Coach Anderson has not been with the team as much but
his brother has been with the team for a few years and said it
has been the same core group of guys.
Zane (Anderson) has been coaching for five years and has
been doing it every summer and he coaches a fall ball team
and it is the same group of guys, said Anderson.
Most of these players came from a small town and grew up
playing baseball in some capacity. Anderson has played ball
from a young age.
I started back in tee ball here Strathmore and ever since I
could walk I started throwing a baseball. I was always pretty
decent at it and stuck with it and it took me a long way, said
Anderson. He played every position on the diamond all the
way through. On how excited he is to be going to Alaska,
It should be great, never actually been to Alaska personally
and we are going to be playing teams from across the United
MEMORIAMS
In Loving Memory Of Left: Strathmore Reds Coaches Ryan Kennedy (l) and Dale Anderson hope

The Family of
George T. Pinchbeck
Would like to express their sincerest thanks
for all the help given and kindnesses
shown to the family, particularly over the
last months. The outpouring of support
that included hospital visits, food, cards,
phone calls, prayers, transportation, snow
clearance, and so many other expressions
of caring were, and are now, so much
appreciated. Thank you to the members
of the Lions Club and the Strathmore Fire
Department, who often lent a hand. Thank
you also to all those who joined the family
in the celebration of Georges life. George
wanted a big party (for our fiftieth wedding
anniversary in August), and he got his party.
We are particularly grateful to those within
Alberta Health Services who helped
make Georges last months of his life as
comfortable as possible: Drs. Manocha,
Fanning, Lester, and Hennig, the staff
at Strathmore Hospital, and the medical
personnel who transported George so often.
We are so grateful to be a part of such a
caring community.
