The JCI University

Since its start in 1990, the J CI training area has seen
major changes and is now operating more and more like
a professional training organization aimed to the
development of new trainers who in turn will help J CI
officers to efficiently fulfill their duties and ensure the
members have the skills and knowledge to act
responsibly in local activities.

Since the establishment of the online tools in 2006 to its
complete online and paperless certification system
finished in 2007, J CI University is also moving towards a
more efficient operational system and professional
standards for training within the organization aimed to
provide standardization in the quality of the training
courses delivered.

The Certified J CI Head Trainer program is aimed to
continuously develop new and young trainers by
coaching and providing opportunities to train with more
experienced trainers at J CI Official courses.

The online tools for J CI Official courses organization and
registration will keep records of all training activities not
only of trainers, but also of all members who participate
in J CI Official courses.

2.1. Certification Commission

The certification commission shall be comprised of the J CI University Director, as chairman; the four (4)
International Training Fellows (ITFs), and the staff officer responsible for Training. The staff officer shall not have
voting rights at the Certification Commission Meetings. The Certification Commission shall meet on a regular

Graduate (IG) and International Training Fellow (ITF); review J CI's training strategy; and make recommendations
to the Executive Committee. Any decision of the Certification Commission on appeals regarding the certification
process shall be final. (Policy 18-5, Section 3. Certification Commission - J CI Policy Manual approved November
2007).

2.2. Duties of the JCI University Director

In addition to the functions outlined in Section 1 of this policy, the J CI University Director shall research, plan,
implement and evaluate the training programs of all J CI Academies, Area Conferences and World Congresses in

2.6. Operational Guidelines

The Executive Committee shall approve the J CI University Operational Guidelines proposed by the J CI University
Director to achieve high standards of performance in the management of programs, trainers, and certification or
endorsement processes. (Policy 18-5, Section 7. Operational Guidelines - J CI Policy Manual approved November
2007).

2.6.1. New rules and procedures

The J CI University Certification Commission will propose the rules and the levels of trainer certification
and status of certified assistant and head trainer for the approval of the J CI Executive Committee

3. TRAINERS CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

In order for J CI to fulfill its Mission and provide opportunities for young people, its officers at all levels must perform their
duties and responsibilities at the highest levels. To train the members, and local and national officers, the J CI University
created a Trainers Certification Program. Through this program, J CI trainers have the opportunity to become certified to
conduct the many J CI endorsed and official training courses.

3.1. The JCI University Certification Commission

The J CI University operates on the philosophy that training, as any other J CI service or entity, must be effective
and responsive to the individual member. With this in mind, J CI created the J CI University Certification
Commission, composed of individual members representing each geographical Area of J CI.

The Commission, appointed by the J CI President, reviews and approves applications to the J CI University,
establishes and monitors certification requirements, periodically analyses and evaluates course materials,
ensures that established training standards are maintained, and provides the motivational and creative impetus
required to drive J CI training to the forefront of adult learning.

3.2. Certification Levels

To guide trainers along the path of excellence, the J CI University has established a Certification Program a road
map to achievement in the field of training. The program provides incentives and opportunities for members to
improve their technical skills through specialized training, career development programs, and active participation
in training efforts in the field.

J CI members are encouraged to seek advanced certification after successfully completing the JCI Trainer course
(or JCI Prime before 2008). But the commitment to achievement does not end with the first course. There are
four levels of training achievements that can be reached by every member in J CI.

3.2.1. JCI Trainer (JCI Prime)

The first step in the long journey to become a top trainer in J CI is to acquire the necessary presentation
skills by attending JCI Presenter. With newly learned presentation skills, JCI Trainers are equipped to
offer their local organizations a wide range of training sessions available from J CI. Certification will be
automatic after graduating from JCI Trainer. No further application is needed.

3.2.2. Certified Local Trainer (CLT)

A JCI Trainer (JCI Prime) seeking admission to the Training Institute at level 1 Certified Local Trainer
(CLT) is required to:

J CI University Policy Manual
7
JCI University Policy Manual
A. After graduating from JCI Trainer (JCI Prime), complete 25 hours of training in courses organized by
J CI local or national organizations and having J CI members as participants. Training hours must be
logged in the trainers database at J CIs website.

The J CI University will confirm certification as early as 25 hours after the information regarding the
training hours is completed in the online database.

CLTs will continue conducting training at the local level or higher until they complete the total hours to
attend a JCI Designer course.

3.2.3. Certified National Trainer (CNT)

A CLT seeking certification at level 2 Certified National Trainer (CNT) is required to:

A. After becoming a CLT, conduct 25 additional hours of training. A minimum of 20 hours must be
conducted in courses organized by J CI local or national organizations and having J CI members as
participants. 5 hours of training outside J CI is accepted. Training hours must be logged in the trainers
database at J CIs website.

B. After fulfilling item A, attend and graduate from a JCI Designer course.

Certification will be automatic after graduating from a JCI Designer course. No further application is
needed.

CNTs have the opportunity to make even more meaningful contributions to J CI by providing regional and
national training, and developing new training courses.

3.2.4. International Graduate (IG) and National Graduate (NG)

A CNT seeking certification at level 3 International Graduate (IG) or National Graduate (NG) is
required to:

A. Conduct a minimum of three different training sessions for a total of at least 25 hours of training at the
international level, outside the trainers own country of affiliation and residency. International hours
are also the hours of training conducted and included in the J CI Conferences and J CI Congresses,
even if the trainer is from the host country. A minimum of 15 hours must be conducted in courses
organized by J CI local or national organizations and having J CI members as participants. 10 hours of
non J CI training is accepted. Training hours must be logged in the trainers database at J CIs website.
International Graduate (IG) candidates, who have submitted their course material and have
completed 25 hours of training, but not all at the international level, will be considered National
Graduates (NGs) and shall become International Graduates (IGs) only when they complete the
required 25 hours of international training. No application is needed. NGs may not apply for ITF status
before becoming IGs.

B. Design and submit an original onehour training course, with full rights to J CI. If the course is not in
one of J CI correspondence languages, the applicant can only become National Graduate. The
training course must be designed using the official J CI Training Course Templates and include:
a. Trainers Guide
b. Participants manual
c. PowerPoint slides

After the above requirements are completed, the application will automatically be presented to the J CI
University Certification Commission for consideration and voting. No formal application is needed.

International Graduate (IG) candidates, who have submitted their course material and have completed 25
hours of training, but not all at the international level, will be considered National Graduates (NGs) and
shall become International Graduates (IGs) only when they complete the required 25 hours of
international training. If the original course presented was not in one of the J CI correspondence
languages, the applicant must submit the same course translated into English, Spanish, French or
J apanese or submit another course in one of these languages. No application is needed. NGs may not
apply for ITF status before becoming IGs.

Achieving IG level certification is a mark of distinction and personal and professional excellence in adult
learning. IGs are trainers who are willing to go the extra distance to help their peers to become stronger
leaders, more dynamic trainers, and more effective managers.

3.2.5. International Training Fellow (ITF)

An IG seeking certification at level 4 International Training Fellow (ITF) is required to:

A. Conduct a minimum of six different training sessions for a total of at least 25 hours of training at the
international level, outside his or her national organization or country. A minimum of 15 hours must be
conducted in courses organized by J CI Chapters or NOMs and having J CI members as participants.
10 hours of non J CI training is accepted. Training hours must be logged in the trainers database at
J CIs website.

B. Design and submit an original half-day training course, with full rights to J CI, to be included in the J CI
University website. The training course must be designed using the official J CI Training Course
Templates and include:
a. Trainers Guide
b. Participants manual
c. PowerPoint slides

After the above requirements are completed, the application will automatically be presented to the J CI
University Certification Commission for consideration and voting. No formal application is needed.

The highest honor a member trainer may receive from the J CI University is the title of ITF. As part of J CI
training designing teams, ITFs develop and design new training courses to contribute to the further
development of J CI University Certified Trainers.

3.3. Training hours at JCI Congresses and Conferences

The use of more than one trainer is only valid for the three hours courses and limited to two trainers, invited and
officially recognized as the course trainers can claim the training hours at J CI Conferences and J CI Congress
Training or any other official J CI Meeting. The training hours will be split for both trainers involved.

3.4. Information provided to JCI University

J CI University trusts that all information provided by trainers for Certification purposes is accurate and reflects the
truth and can be verified with the National or Local organizations. Any information provided with the purpose of
certification advancement will be considered a serious offense to the J CI University rules and subject to the rules
and policies in effect.

4. CERTIFIED JCI TRAINERS

4.1. Assistant Trainers

J CI University Policy Manual
9
JCI University Policy Manual
In order to provide more opportunities to new trainers, the J CI University decided to allow CLTs and CNTs to
conduct official J CI courses. To become a Certified J CI Assistant Trainer and be able to conduct J CI official
courses, trainers must meet the following criteria:

A. Any trainer with CLT or higher certification may become a Certified J CI Assistant Trainer for any course from
which he or she has graduated, except as stated in item B.

B. For a JCI Lead course, the Assistant Trainer must also prove that he or she has held at least two leadership
positions in J CI, one of them as a Local President.

To become Assistant Trainer for a J CI course, one must apply online and be approved by the J CI University
Certification Commission. Once the application is approved, the J CI online database will automatically add the
trainers name to the list of Assistant Trainers available for that particular course.

Certified J CI Assistant Trainers will receive support, guidance and help from Certified J CI Head Trainers in order
to sharpen their skills and knowledge about the course and be able to become Certified J CI Head Trainers for that
course after satisfactorily conducting all modules.

4.2. Certified JCI Head Trainers

To become a Certified J CI Head Trainer and be able to conduct J CI official courses, trainers must meet the
following criteria:

A. Have graduated from the JCI Head Trainer course.

B. Have a CNT or higher certification and have satisfactorily conducted all Modules of the training course for
which he or she wants to become Certified J CI Head Trainer.

C. For a JCI Designer course, the Head Trainer must have an NG, IG or higher certification.

To become Certified J CI Head Trainer for a J CI course, one must apply online and be approved by the J CI
University Certification Commission. Once the application is approved, the J CI online database will automatically
add the trainers name to the list of Certified J CI Head Trainers available for that particular course.

4.2.1. Concept

The major role of the Head Trainer will be overseeing the course administration, logistics and ensure that
the quality is at the highest level and, most importantly, the course objectives and outcomes are always
observed and will be achieved at the end of the course.

4.2.2. Stage time

New Trainers cannot reach higher levels in the Certification process or gain experience if they dont have
opportunities to deliver training. It is strongly recommended that the J CI Certified Head Trainer assign at
least 70% of the stage time to the Assistant Trainers. The Certified J CI Head Trainer should only conduct
the parts of the course that require his or her action, such as the Opening and Closing, Reviews, etc., and
leave the Modules to be conducted by the Assistant Trainers.

4.2.3. Developing new Head Trainers

In order to reduce costs and offer J CI Official courses everywhere, new Head Trainers need to be
developed. J CI Universitys strategy to implement the development of more Certified J CI Head Trainer is
that when possible and needed, only the Head Trainer should be invited from outside and the use of local

J CI University Policy Manual
10
JCI University Policy Manual
Assistant Trainers should be promoted. This will reduce costs of bringing only one trainer instead of two
or more and will provide local Assistant Trainers with the opportunity to conduct the course modules and
become Certified J CI Head Trainers in the future.

4.2.4. Training hours

If the Certified J CI Head Trainer is not an ITF and still needs to add training hours to reach higher levels
in the Certification process, J CI University and the online program will credit the Assistant Trainer with
100% of the stage time and the Certified J CI Head Trainer with a standard number of hours per course,
as determined by the J CI University Certification Commission.

4.2.5. Major role

The Certified J CI Head Trainer is expected to stay in the room when an Assistant Trainer is delivering
training to observe the performance and ensure the content is delivered properly, as written in the
Trainers Guide. If an Assistant Trainer gets lost in the content, deviates from the topic or the module
objective, it is expected that the Head Trainer diplomatically support the Assistant Trainer (a break can be
given or the Head Trainer can politely add comments during the Assistant Trainers presentation) to
ensure the training gets back on track.

4.2.6. Administrative role

The head Trainer is ultimately responsible for all administrative aspects of the course, ensuring:

a. The course is delivered according to the manual,
b. The course objectives and outcomes are reached,
c. The environment maintains the highest standards and the audience is respected and is satisfied with
the course,
d. The overall course material, promotion and delivery is observed according to J CI rules,
e. The Sponsors, organizers and Trainers receive recognition for their support and work,
f. The audience receives the recognition and thanks for being there and Certificates are properly given
(if certificates are part of the course),
g. The report on the Assistant Trainers is completed online and their training hours are logged in,
h. The final Course Report is completed and the participants who successfully graduated form the
course are properly graduated in the online database.

4.3. Transition rules for existing Assistant and Head Trainer to adapt to the new rules

6.1.4. Development and testing of JCI Official Courses

and will only be online after the final content is approved by the J CI University Certification
Commission and is considered a J CI Official Course. Before this stage the course will be in
development and any test cannot be used to graduate participants or certify modules for Assistant
Trainers. Trainers can, however, claim these hours manually in their databases.
4 During the time from the approval as a J CI Official Course to its official launch in English, Spanish
and French, the course tests will be online but only organized with the approval of the J CI University
Director and organized by the staff person assigned to the J CI University.
5 The head designer of these courses can recommend that the key designers who have contributed to
the development of the course be granted the status of Certified J CI Head Trainer or have the
modules they have conducted during the testing stage recognized in their databases.

9. JCI UNIVERSITY TRAINING STANDARDS

Any Certified J CI Trainer (Head Trainer or Assistant Trainer) will represent J CI whenever delivering a training course and
the actions, behavior and declarations will be observed and judged. By speaking to an audience and by having their
undivided attention, your words will have an impact and will be taken as an official declaration on behalf of the
organization, whether you are empowered to speak for the organization or not.

Be careful with the words you use and what you say regarding J CI because it may be misinterpreted by the audience.
Here are the standards a J CI Certified Trainer should follow:

9.1. Dress code

Ensure you know the dress code for the course. Even if the training is in a relaxed environment, you should not
dress in shorts or sandals. Try to wear official J CI clothing with the official logos on it. Avoid wearing anything with
old logos.

9.2. Behavior

Members will observe your behavior and will see you as an example. Act accordingly and always set a good
example to others. How many times have you seen someone you admire as a leader or trainer, only to find out
that after hours or face-to-face there is another personality inside? Avoid any comments, declarations or jokes
that can offend, hurt or embarrass people. The damage it will cause is not only on you as a person and a Trainer,
but to the organization and its reputation.

9.3. Administrative and internal JCI issues

As a J CI Certified Head Trainer, members expect you to share knowledge and deliver training. If you have any
personal view or any comment on internal J CI, NOM or LOM issues, you must run for office if you want to express
those views. As a Certified J CI Head Trainer you are not allowed to express political or administrative views and it
is also your responsibility to ensure the Assistant Trainers follow the same rule.

J CI University Policy Manual

JCI University Policy Manual
9.4. Being an Ambassador of JCI

A J CI Certified Trainer is being given the authority through the J CI University Certification Commission to train the
members, and local and national officers in their respective National Organizations. Hence, the Certified J CI
Trainers are also considered by J CI University as ambassadors of J CI at large and J CI University in particular. As
such, Certified J CI Trainers should be very good role models to the members and officers they train by acting
as inspiring ambassadors by exposing and completely following its principles, laws, policies, and related rules to
the level of excellence. J CI University cannot be selective in adhering to what J CI stands for to suit particular
interest which can be political in nature. When acting as trainers, organize courses or inform about the rules, J CI
Certified Trainers must walk-the-talk and do exactly as they preach.

9.5. Training style

You have your own training style but as a Certified J CI Trainer you must act according to J CIs standards. Avoid
using useless games and activities. Dont confuse time-outs (activities to relax or wake up the audience) with
learning activities (activities that bring and transfer some kind of knowledge or learning and are related to the
content of the course). If there is no real purpose for it, it is a big waste of time and it will affect your image as a
J CI Trainer. Having participants being blind-folded and guided by hitting their heads may seem like a good
activity, but try to look at it from the participants perspective or an outsider, just passing by and observing the
scene.

9.6. Environment

Do not use or allow Assistant Trainers to use activities that may disturb other people using the same environment,
such as adjacent training rooms used by others or disturbing other guests if the course is conducted at a hotel or
convention center. Do not allow noisy activities that will bring more damage to the reputation of the organization
than benefits. Keep a professional tone all time.

9.7. Organizations image

Never use or allow Assistant Trainers to use any game or activity that can project a bad image of the organization
and its members, such as conducting activities outside the training room that are not proper to professional young
adults. If groups have to work outside the training room, ensure they are in a proper place and do not disturb
other people who are not part of the training or the organization.

9.8. Promotional material

If a course requires participants to produce material, such as promotional posters, invitations or flyers, ensure that
these materials are only used and handed out inside the training room. Never allow materials to be placed in
public places where others, not related to the training activity can see or have contact with them. If promotional
activities must be performed, ensure that they are only for J CI members and if your participants want to enter
other training rooms, first ask for permission from the other Head Trainers.

9.9. Language

Use a language that everyone can understand. Avoid the use of local jargon, especially if people may not know
the meaning or intent of the words. Speak a simple language especially when you are in countries where your
native language is not the first language or the audience is from many different cultures and languages.

9.10. Local cultures and customs

If you are conducting training in other countries, regions or places, make sure you study the local culture and
always respect it. Avoid mentioning your culture or others as better, etc. Not all cultures are perfect but each

J CI University Policy Manual
18
JCI University Policy Manual
person thinks that his or her culture is the best one.

9.11. Comparisons

Never compare people, LOMs or NOMs with others. Trainers can easily fall in the trap of telling how good another
person, LOM or NOM is doing, trying to motivate participants to perform better, but they do not realize that if it is
said officially by a Trainer, it seems that J CI is rating those people, LOMs or NOMs. You can mention what other
people are doing, explaining how your participants can also do it or achieve the same standards, but dont
compare any performance.

9.12. References

Avoid using things that are not well known as a reference (the size of a baseball, for example, has no meaning if
participants dont know what baseball is). Also, referring to scenes or things seen in movies may get people
confused if they have not seen that particular movie. Always refer to things that everyone can relate to and
understand.

9.13. Quotes

Not everyone likes the same quotes and the authors. Avoid mentioning quotes if you are not sure that the locals
will understand it and like it. Important: if you work with different languages, understand that a quote when
translated can mean something different. Also, mentioning authors from countries that are not liked by the people
where you are conducting the training may not be the best thing to do.

9.14. Be humble

Always remember that no matter how good you are, modesty can be your best asset. People will like you as long
as you treat them as equals and friends. Because you are conducting a Training Course does not make you
better or superior to your audience.

9.15. Remember to be thankful

Always thank people for the opportunity and for hosting you. Dont forget sponsors, important officers, VIPs, etc.
Appreciate every gift you receive and take it with you (if you leave it at the hotel, it may be returned to the LOM
and will look bad). Make sure you always have small gifts you can give when you receive one. It can be
something typical from your city or country or a J CI article.

9.16. Single out participants

Every person must be treated with the same respect and attention. Dont single out participants you know or give
more attention to the ones who are more outspoken. Help the ones who are not so extroverted by asking easy
questions and giving credit when they participate.

9.17. Maintain focus

Avoid falling into the trap of trouble makers by engaging in discussion and arguments or by giving long
explanations on matters that are not part of the course content. Stay focused on the course content, objectives
and outcomes.
