2.00 DESCRIPTION
2.01 The ADSS CORONA GRADING TUBE
(ACGT) is a device designed to help
optimize ADSS cable position in an extra high
voltage (EHV) electrical field. The ACGT is attached
at the end of the cable attachment hardware onto
Structural Reinforcing Rods (SRR) or a combination
of SRR with Outer Rods. Items 1 through 5
(Figure 1) are pre-assembled at the factory and are
to be applied as a unit.

CLAMP TOGETHER AND CLAMP SEPERATED
2.02 Featured components of the ACGT
function as follows:
Grading Tube and Corona End Cap
reduces the intensity of the electric field
around the ADSS cable to a tolerable level.
The assembled CORONA CLAMP halves
cover the ends of the attachment hardware
rods to suppress corona. In addition to the
bolt-holes, weep holes (drilled completely
through to the bore of the clamp) are
provided to avoid potential damage to the
cable from ice accumulation.
For FIBERLIGN ICE SHIELD Dead-ends
and Suspensions, the assembled CORONA
CLAMP also functions as an ice shield to
deflect ice formations that slide down cables in
mountainous regions.
2.03 The ACGT is designed to fit FIBERLIGN
Hardware including standard High
Tension Dielectric Dead-ends and Dielectric
Suspensions (Single, Double, or Spread Double)
as well as the Ice Shield versions of dead-ends
and suspensions. In each case, the bore of the
CORONA Clamp (item 5 and 6 in Figure 1) is
designed to match the respective reinforcing rods.

2.04 The Color Code (item 8, Figure 1) typically
matches the cable attachment hardware color code.
The ACGT is normally supplied with its respective
dead-end or suspension product. Consequently,
various ACGT's may have the same color code - but
they are not interchangeable. Keep the ACGT's
with their respective cable hardware kits.
3.00 APPLICATION
3.01 Complete application of the dead-end or
suspension product in accordance with the
appropriate application procedure. The key to a
successful ACGT application is that the rod ends
of the cable attachment hardware are aligned
uniformly and not extremely staggered. Rod align-
ment for Suspensions can be controlled easier than
that for dead-ends. For standard High Tension
dead-ends, focus on aligning the SRR ends out in
the span. Each CORONA CLAMP bore allows 2"
(50 mm) maximum rod end offset (Figure 2).
3.02 Align the threaded CoronaClamp half to
properly cover the rod ends of the SRR
(Figure 4). Hold clamp half against the SRR in place
while reaching for the removable Corona Clamp
half (Figure 5).

AGAINST THE SRR WITH

3.03 The removable CORONA Clamp half has
1/4"- 20 UNC socket head cap screws and
lock washers captured with o-rings (Figure 6). Leave
the o-rings in place and start each screw with a
3/16" Allen key. Once each screw is engaged
for the first few threads, continue tightening each
screw one revolution at a time - alternating between
each screw to bring the CORONA CLAMP HALVES
together evenly (Figure 7). Complete tightening and
torque to about 10 ft-lbs. per screw - assure that lock
washers are flattened.
FIGURE 2: MINIMIZE ROD END OFFSET
For Ice Shield Dead-ends and Ice Shield
Suspensions, the alignment requirement may
be tighter, i.e. less than 2" (50 mm).
NOTE: Proper alignment is required to keep the
rods within the end of the CORONA Clamp and
assure adequate surface contact between the
rods and the inner diameter of the clamp
(Figure 3).

3.04 Double Suspensions and Spread Double
Suspensions may have ADSS CORONA
GRADING TUBES on each end. Repeat the
application steps in this section for these types
of products.
