The Pas t or s Not es
I turn 55 in a few weeks, and Im stunned by this. It seems like only a few years ago I was in my early 30's,
my hair was black and I was 30 pounds lighter. I knew the bands featured in Rolling Stone, I knew who the
celebrities were on the magazines in the supermarket checkout line. I dont feel much different physically
than I did in years past, but suddenly, in a few weeks, I will be able to get senior citizen discounts. Where
does the time go?

In the last week or so, the fireflies have appeared, blinking their presence to the opposite sex and delighting
children everywhere who, like many of us did, chase them in the cool of the evening, trap them in jars and
watch their phosphorescent glow. But by the end of the summer, the fireflies have lived their brief lives and
are gone.

The length of our days seems much the same. My father, in his 80's, says he spends a lot of time thinking
back over his life, hoping that he did some good with his time on earth. So do I. Already I look back over my
years as a father, husband, friend and pastor and wonder what good Ive done - and what I should do with
my remaining years. Maybe you do this too.

As I get older, I recognize how complex many problems are and resistant to easy solutions. Yet some things
become simpler. Like discerning what really matters in life. God has given me a full and interesting life, with
a great marriage and children and grandchildren, the privilege to serve as a pastor in widely different
churches, sports and hobbies and the privilege of travel, great friends and many other blessings. But for me,
Ive settled on what Paul says in Galatians: The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself in love.

When I stand before the Almighty, he isnt going to ask me about my skills in Greek or Hebrew, or how
much money I left my children, or whether I had my theology and doctrine down pat, or how many articles
or sermons I had published. I believe God is going to ask, Did you love? Did I love - my wife, my congre-
gations, my children, the sometimes odd people I talk to downtown. Did I love - by giving my time and at-
tention, by sharing my resources, by listening, by praying for people, by doing what others need instead of
what I want. Did I love - by forgiving, not returning evil for evil.

In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul says Love never ends. One day well all close our eyes for the last time; one day
the universe itself will run down as the last star exhausts its nuclear fuel - but love, never ends. We take love
with us into eternity.

And as the measure of our lives, love is the challenge of each day. Its not a bad way to end the day, asking,
Did I love? Its not a bad way to begin the day, asking and praying, How can I love? Loving can be
hard, hard work. Its not often soft or sweet. But its ours as a gift, through the Lord Jesus Christ, Gods love
came down to us. Thanks be to God.

JOY VILLAGE UPDATE
From the Tree of Lives website:
We believe that every child should grow up
surrounded by a caring family. This is some-
thing we seek for each child we care for at Joy
Childrens Village.
The simple model that we use calls us to pro-
vide each orphaned or abandoned child ac-
cepted into Joy Village a new family that in-
cludes a loving Christian mother and 7 9 sib-
lings, a permanent home where they receive
spiritual nurturing, a quality education, and
medical care.
We need your help. The children accepted
into Joy Village come from a life on the streets
or a home environment of neglect or abuse.
Most enter Joy Village suffering from HIV+/
AIDS, abandonment or severe neglect. Their
needs are significant; the financial cost is high.
We supply each child access to social workers
and counselors, tutors, medications, physi-
cians, tuition to a school where they receive
remedial instruction, clothing, food and health
insurance, all within a family.
As you know, our church has contributed to
this fine effort. Visit the website,
www.treeoflives.org to find out more about
supporting Joy Childrens Village.

HABITATE FOR HUMANITY IN FRANKLIN COUNTY
Mark Story of Habitat for Humanity has been contacted and has given a
recent update on local projects now underway.
The sewer project we committed to as part of our Capital Campaign pro-
ject is now underway at the Limestone Road Habitat site. Guilford Town-
ship is doing the construction of the sewer line. All necessary permits have
been obtained; the line pathway has been surveyed and the township anticipates completing the
main line phase by early July.
In addition, ground has been broken for the first new house located at 836 Limestone Road.
Construction will start in the next two weeks. Currently, with all this happening, another Habi-
tat project is underway at 3
rd
and King Streets known as the Phoenix house. Debris from the
fire has been removed and the cement basement floor is poured. By the end of June, the goal is
to have the basement walls poured, the floor deck completed, and backfill done at the site.
Construction will proceed throughout the summer on the house as well as the new dwelling on
Limestone Road.
Volunteers for these projects are needed! Church volunteers have put in one workday in
June. Bruce Burr is our contact for volunteers, so sign up with him and get scheduled for work-
days in July and throughout the months ahead.

Happy summer, everyone! We ended this years youth-group season with
an awesome time at the Carlisle Sports Emporium, playing laser tag and
arcade games! Thank you so much for your faithful giving that enables
us to participate in such fun outings!
Sarah, Emily, Kelly, and J eremy have graduated high school and

We continue to witness the many blessings that the Lord bestows upon us at Central. We are
grateful and motivated to continue on in the good news of the gospel! Be encouraged by the faith-
fulness of our Lord!
Contemporary Worship:
We are very, very, very sad to say so long to Sarah Dusinberre and Matt Brennan as they travel

lives!
That being said, we are in need of an electric guitar player! If you know of anyone who loves the
Lord and is gifted in this area, please let Erin know (302) 383-1053 or erinmregan@gmail.com.

I sincerely apologize if I have forgotten anyone. Thank you to EVERYONE who prayed,
donated items for crafts and decorating, helped at the work days, and gave words of en-
