THE MISSION OF FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IS TO MAKE AND NURTURE CHRISTIAN DISCIPLES THROUGH THE PRESENCE AND POWER OF GOD.
THE ORDER OF DIVINE SERVICE The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost
OPENING VOLUNTARY Pice dorgue, BWV 572 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
CALL TO WORSHIP (responsively) will tell of Your name to my brothers and sisters, and lead them in praise. You did not despise the afflicted nor turn a deaf ear when they cried to You. All the ends of the earth shall turn to You, O God; all families shall worship the Lord. We will tell of Your deeds to those who follow, and proclaim Your deliverance to all. Let us praise the Lord and worship His Holy Name!
PROCESSIONAL HYMN HYMN TO JOY oyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day! All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, Singing bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee. Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed, Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest! Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are Thine; Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine. Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began; Father love is reigning oer us, brother love binds man to man. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife, Joyful music leads us Sunward in the triumph song of life. Henry J. Van Dyke 3 I J
PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison) e pray for forgiveness this day. For choosing power over service, forgive us. For seeking glory rather than humility, forgive us. For pushing ourselves to the front, when our presence is needed on the sidelines, forgive us. Help us know where we are needed and how best to serve you and your people. Guide us to your side, that we might be your hands of healing and compassion for a world in need. In Christs name, we pray. Amen.
WORDS OF PARDON AND ASSURANCE or God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. The congregation responds: Thanks be to God!
ANTHEM, sung by the choir. Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
how amiable are thy dwellings; thou Lord of hosts! My soul hath a desire and longing to enter in to the courts of the Lord: My heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young: Even thy altars O Lord of hosts, my king and my God. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: They will be alway praising thee. The glorious majesty of the Lord our God be upon us: prosper thou the work of our hands upon us. O prosper thou our handy work, o prosper thou our handy work.
O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home.
Psalm 84; Psalm 90

believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins. The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them.

hile they were there, the time came for Mary to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. And in that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.
Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for seeI am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people:

hen the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place.
And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
