667 We welcome all advice, updates and additions to this information.
SHIPMASTERS REPORT: July 1986 (Updated 2002).
Pilotage is compulsory and available day and night. Pilot boards the
vessel in the vicinity of red pillar light buoy (RF. 12s. 4M.) in approximate
position Lat. 43 42.8' N., Long. 15 51.1' E. Pilots operate on
VHF Channel 12.
The best anchorage is inside the South part of Sibenski Canal. We
anchored in approximate position Lat. 43 40.7' N., Long. 15 53.1' E.
The bottom is gravel, sand and algae.
There is a phosphate pier with silos on the quay (only one pipe
available at present, plans to build another pipe during the next year)
whose capacity is 6,500 tonnes per day. Maximum permissible draft for
this pier is 32 ft. but it is especially important for Master and Chief Officer
to know that on this pier, owing to insufficient depth, a vessel even with
a draft of 30 ft., cannot be berthed alongside. Vessel normally 2.0 m.
3.0 m. from the quay. Berthed vessel is partly aground so draft survey
will show signifiantly less cargo than that actually loaded. It is therefore
recommended that draft is checked before Pilot boards and thereby
check the actual quantity of cargo on board. Also Masters and Chief
Officers must bear in mind that water is very brackish and density varies,
so during draft survey density must be checked at various depths
(recommended to check the density at depths 2.0 m., 6.0 m. and 9.0 m.)
and at different locations.
Draft survey is made by official control house (Adriainspekt or Isco or
Zik) on arrival and on departure.
Fresh water is available at the pier.

could affect navigation.
GENERAL: Stores: ISSA members available.
SHIPMASTERS REPORT: September 1987 (Updated 2002).
Port: Gazenica
Charts: B.A. Charts No. 2775 and 2771.
Documents:
6 Crew Lists.
2 Crew Declarations.
2 Manifests.
1 Health Declaration.
3 Cargo Manifests.
Shore passes are issued and have to be returned before departure.
A Stores Declaration is required prior to departure showing stores
used whilst in port.
Approaches: Approaches are through deep water down Zadar Kanal.
Most of the island passages are well charted and the navigation aids
are good. The depths are as shown on the chart.
There is a shallow bank off the North Breakwater Buoy off
Zadar/Gazenica cargo port.
Anchorage: Vessels bound for the industrial port of Gazenica (2 miles
South of Zadar City) normally anchor and wait for clearance or berth off
the old city as per anchorage indicated on B.A. Chart No. 2775 (position
Lat. 44 0.6' N., Long.15 12.6' E.) in about 20 fathoms with mud bottom.
An alternative anchorage is off Gazenica in position Lat. 44 05.2' N.,
Long. 15 15' E.
Pilotage: Berthing/unberthing possible from 0000 hrs. 2400 hrs.,
weather permitting. Berthing does not take place if there is a southerly
wind in excess of Force 5 blowing.
Pilot normally boards off the town from a launch. Pilot may be
contacted on Channels 16 and 12, however VHF is not continously
monitored.
Rimini in Italy also use VHF Channel 12 so some confusion can arise.
Tugs: Normally 1 tug is used for berthing using a ships line from the
stern. One tug comes from Lamjana Shipyard on Ugljanisl Island.
Additional tugs if required come from Split. Pilot advises that use of tugs
is costly.
No tugs used on departure.
Berthing: Vessel berthed on No. 3 Berth in Gazenica which is on the
South side of the harbour. Oil and VCM handled at the berth.
Vessel berths stern first with the aid of a tug. Occasionally anchor is
required when berthing port side to. If it is very windy the starboard
anchor is dredged along the bottom.
Berth No. 2, the most Northern berth in the port, is for grain handling.
The hulk indicated on B.A. Chart No. 2775 is for storing soya bean oil.
The products berth, Berth No. 3, and a small berth for oil rig supply
vessels, Berth No. 4, are both on the South side.
Berth No. 3 (for VCM) has a flat face of 60 m. The fendering is fair
but widely spaced. Maximum draft permitted if berthing head out, which
is normal, is 38 ft. or 42 ft. if berthing head in. It is normal to berth port
side to. The water depth shoals to 29 ft. on Berth No. 4. Moorings at
No. 3 Berth consist of 2 head/stern lines, 2 breast lines and 2 springs
forward and aft. The pilot boat assists with running of moorings.
Berth No. 3 is very exposed to southerly winds but pilot reports that
the berth is fairly sheltered from Northerly winds (Bora).
Cargo: Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM): One 8 in. quick connection and
14 in. 300 ASA flexible hose vapour return line are in use. Rate of
discharge about 250 tonnes per hour to 300 tonnes per hour. Generally
speaking, the shore authorities do not allow the vessel to hot gas to
shore upon completion of cargo.
There are 2 shore tanks numbered R301 with capacity of 4,038 cu.m.
and R302 of 5,225 cu.m. The tank working pressure is 10 Cto 50 C
at 2 to 3 kg/sq.cm. Maximum pressure 4.9 kg./sq.cm.
Samples take 45 minutes per sample to analyse.
Shore personnel connect and disconnect hoses.
