-literary analysis-
Tess of the d'Urbervilles is Hardy's tragic masterpiece. It is the story of innocence and evil, of
man and nature, of history and its relations to the present, concentrated on the fate of a simple country girl.
Reading Hardy's novels one can easily recognise the ree! "riters vie" on man# a being born to
endure that "hich "as to befall him. The $nglish "riter conceived almost all his heroes as variants of
certain types, "ithout endo"ing them "ith too much inner depth. They only have to face the essential
hypostases of %ate "hich is the principle around "hich all the Hardian stories spin. It is a notion
designating the po"er that predetermines events.
Tess, the main character of the novel, is a simple innocent country girl, "ho tries to escape her social
bac!ground under the pressure of e&terior circumstances' she is forced to fight the principles of evil,
embodied by (lec, but she cannot resist' she sins, therefore she is punished.
(lec is the symbol of evil, the embodiment of the "ic!edness and unscrupulousness of the
implacable "orld in "hich man is obliged to live.
(ngel )lare is neither good nor bad' he is not daring and he is conservative, abandoning Tess in the
most difficult moments. Hardy did not succeed in portraying him very "ell so he remains a rather vague
character.
Tess of the d'Urbervilles is a novel "ritten by a story*teller and not by a po"erful analyst.

author's eye for the significant details is to be mentioned. The atmosphere is set at this stage' dar!ness,
coldness, "ildness, and greatness are supported by the symbolical paraphrases used by Tess and (ngel to

states. The communion bet"een character and nature may be follo"ed throughout the te&t# "hen Tess is
falling asleep everything is dar!' reserve, taciturnity and hesitation are the /ualities of the landscape at that
moment even the night "ind has died out. Then gradually, the reader is prepared for the moment of Tess's
a"a!ening# the light is gro"ing, the stones are no more dar!, but they are glistening green grey. The reader
is announced that something is going to happen through some significant phrases as foe e&ample, the light
is strong or the sunbeam "hich shines full on Tess's face. The reader can probably feel as Tess feels, that
everything has become clear, that the heroine does "hatever she has to do so the memorable phrases It is
as it should be and I am ready clima& the "hole passage. The +tonehenge scene sho"s the idea that
Hardy's novel's nature does not help the characters, but only pro0ects the human tragedy on the primordial
a&es.
