General

Introduction to BAMTEC

BAMTEC

is a system developed to assist with the fast, accurate and economical placement of
reinforcing bars in a reinforced concrete slab. It was developed in Germany and OneSteel Reinforcing
have the licence to market the product in Australia.

BAMTEC

is straight reinforcing bars spot welded to a number of continuous metal straps and rolled
around shape forming rings to create a BAMTEC

carpet. The carpets are delivered to site, lifted into

position and unrolled like a roll of carpet.

The BAMTEC

system is supported by CAD software that assists in the generation of BAMTEC

carpets. Changes to standard construction details may be required to best utilise BAMTEC

.

Slab Shapes

The BAMTEC

system is ideal for complicated slab shapes as it is scheduled using a CAD package and
bars are positioned in the BAMTEC

carpets accurately by computer driven manufacturing equipment.

There is a general requirement that BAMTEC

carpets must roll from the widest section of slab to the

narrowest so that they do not overhang formwork or clash with other slab end restrictions.

Slab Types

The BAMTEC

system best suits a flat plate slab type design, with or without drop panels, however it
can be incorporated into beam and slab type designs.

Bar Size and Spacing

500PLUS

reinforcing bar of 10mm to 32mm diameter and ribbed wire of 8mm to12mm diameter can be
incorporated into the BAMTEC

carpets. The production machinery imposes a minimum spacing of

50mm between bars and OneSteel Reinforcing limit the maximum spacing to 300mm between bars.
Various combinations of bar size and length can be incorporated into any one BAMTEC

carpet. A
minimum bar length of 1.7m is required to achieve a rollable carpet.

Additional Reinforcement

Additional reinforcing can be tied to the carpets once laid if required, however the BAMTEC

system
can incorporate them in the BAMTEC

carpets as long as bar spacing does not encroach the 50mm

minimum bar spacing requirement.

Specifying BAMTEC

reinforcing

BAMTEC

can be drawn up as for conventional reinforcing or the required minimum design steel
intensities (mm
2
/m) can be provided for more efficient use of reinforcing.

Columns

BAMTEC

carpets cannot be rolled over column starters that protrude more than 100mm above the slab
soffit. This may require standard slab and column details or construction practices to be altered to suit the
most appropriate method for each project. The options available are as follows:

1) Detail BAMTEC carpets to roll up to the edge of columns and provide lap bars and some
extra loose bars to make the slab reinforcement continuous around the columns.

2) The use of a coupling system to join column bars just above the slab soffit. It is preferred
if the bars to be coupled are splice bars that lap with the main column reinforcement, this
allows the next lift of column steel to be prefabricated improving placement efficiency.

3) Back pouring of column allows column steel to be placed after placing BAMTEC

carpets
which incorporate a penetration for the column steel. Lap bars are required to make the
slab reinforcement continuous around the column.

4) A variation to 3 above is to part pour column so that the lapping of column steel occurs
below the slab soffit.

Walls

BAMTEC

carpets cannot be rolled over wall starters that protrude more than 100mm above the slab
soffit. This may require standard slab and wall details or construction practices to be altered to suit the
most appropriate method for each project. The options available are as follows:

1) Detail BAMTEC

carpets around the wall and provide lap bars to make the bottom slab
reinforcement continuous over the wall. Top steel will need to be loose tied.

2) Bend wall starter bars into the slab in a direction parallel to the wall. If the wall is to be
continuous, then place new starter bars in the slab after BAMTEC

carpet placement.

3) Bend wall bars perpendicular to the wall and tie a dummy bar to the top of the wall bars to
allow rolling of bottom BAMTEC

carpets. Remove dummy bar once bottom BAMTEC

carpets have been placed, this will allow bottom carpets to drop into the correct position.

4) Precast walls can remove rolling restrictions which suits the BAMTEC

system.

5) Insitu walls can be handled with a starter bar system such as Rebox if the construction
process favours jump or slip form. Otherwise insitu walls can be handled using lapping
U bars at the top and bottom of the wall.

Beams

Where possible the BAMTEC

system best suits a flat plate slab type design, however it can be used
with beam and slab type designs. To incorporate BAMTEC

with beams, consideration must be given to

the installation process when detailing, as beams with ligatures can be restrictive to carpet rollout.

Standard Beams

Standard beams can be handled in various ways; some are detailed below.

1) Incorporating a lap bar into the standard detail to allow the bottom BAMTEC

carpets to be
rolled short of the beam and then made continuous with the lap bar through the beam.

2) Changing the reinforced beam placement process to allow a prefabricated cage to be lowered
into place after the bottom BAMTEC

carpets have been placed. This method requires the

steel fixer to reach to the bottom of the beam cage to re-position beam bars once the beam has
been placed, so this method should be restricted to a beam with a depth 500mm, or less,
below the slab soffit.

3) Place beam steel into position, roll out bottom BAMTEC

carpet over the beam. Once bottom

BAMTEC

carpet has been placed remove the required top beam bars to allow the
BAMTEC

carpet to fall into the required position then re-tie the beam bars into their correct
position. This method would be suitable for slabs up to 200mm thick.

Edge Beams

Edge beams can be handled in various ways; some are detailed below.

1) Changing the reinforced beam placement process to allow a prefabricated cage to be lowered
into place after the bottom BAMTEC

carpets have been placed. This method requires the

steel fixer to reach to the bottom of the beam cage to re-position beam bars once the beam has
been placed, so this method should be restricted to a beam with a depth of 500mm, or less,
below the slab soffit.

2) Incorporating a lap bar into the standard detail to allow the bottom BAMTEC

carpet to be
rolled short of the beam and then be made continuous with the lap bar.

3) Changing the reinforced beam placement process to allow a prefabricated cage to be lowered
into place after the bottom BAMTEC

carpets have been placed. This method requires the

steel fixer to reach to the bottom of the beam cage to re-position beam bars once the beam has
been placed, so this method should be restricted to a beam with a depth of 500mm, or less,
below the slab soffit. A special ligature shape is used to allow the top reinforcing lap bar to be
incorporated within the beam cage.

4) Lapping U bars in prefabricated or loose form are used to tie both the top and bottom
BAMTEC

carpets into the edge beam. Longitudinal bars confined within the U bar will need to
placed as loose bars.

Band Beams

Standard band beams can be handled in various ways; some are detailed below.

1) For band beams which require ligatures, change the reinforced beam placement process to
allow a prefabricated cage or ligature skeleton to be lowered into place after the bottom
BAMTEC

carpets have been placed.

2) For band beams that do not require ligatures, place bottom beam steel and then roll
BAMTEC

carpets.

Step Downs

To incorporate BAMTEC

with a step down, the Z bar must be separate from the main slab reinforcing
bars. The Z bar can be loose tied or prefabricated into cages and installed before top carpets.

Construction Joint

No major changes are required to a construction joint detail when using BAMTEC

. Commonly cogs or
hooks are specified on the end of the bars at a construction joint, this must be changed to a U bar tied
between the bottom and top carpets (refer type 1). The U Bars can be incorporated into a prefabricated
cage to improve speed of placement.

If main slab reinforcement is to continue through the joint and lap with the next stage then strap location
will need to be specified during scheduling to allow placement of joint formwork. (refer type 2)
