In 1920 and 1923 the Society forPromotingChristianKnowledgepublishedVolumesIandIIofDocu-
ments Illustrative of the History of the ChurcheditedbythelateB.J.Kidd,andcoveringtheperioddownto
AD 461, the dividing point betweenthe volumes being AD 313. As source booksthese have served stu-
dents of Early Church History well. Theyare now outofprint,andthepresentbookaimsatbeinga
successortothe earlier partof Kiddswork. In the process ofselectionsomeofthepassagesusedby
Kiddhavebeendropped,andanumberofothersadded.Itishopedthatthenotes,inwhichnumerous
further passages are incorporated, the chronological tables, and the notes on sources will be found
useful.

ItisnownearlythirtyyearssinceA New Eusebius wasrstpublished.Sincethen,countlesstheological
studentsandalsostudentsoftheGreco-RomanworldundertheRomanempirehaveprotedfromit.
TheEditorwasasuperbClassicalscholarwhoalsopossessedawideknowledgeofPatristictextsanda
longexperienceaslecturerandsupervisorofstudies.Thesequalitiesenabledhimtoselectdocuments
whichwerebothsignicantinthemselvesandalsoofmostvaluetostudents.
Aerthirtyyearssomerevisionwouldhavebeenneeded,butduringthattimeimportantnewdoc-
uments have come tolight that required inclusion. Since1957 theGnosticlibraryfoundatNagHam-
madi in Upper Egypt in1945,consistingofCopticdocumentstranslatedfromearlierGreekoriginals,
has become availablefullyinEnglish.Aerlongandvexatiousdelaysthewholesurvivingcollection
has been published by Professor James M. Robinson, Director of the Institute of Christianity and
Antiquity, at Claremont Graduate School in California. Almost for the rst time the Gnostic move-
ment could be understood in its own rightwithouttheintermediacyofitsopponents.Aselectionof
extracts from some of these documents has therefore been included in this new edition. The Nag
Hammadi library also contained a complete Coptic version of the Gospel of Thomas, fragments of
which had been discovered at Oxyrhynchus at theendofthelastcentury,andextractsfromthistoo
have now beenincluded.Athirdgapwastheomissionofanti-Christianpolemicintheyearsleading
up tothe Great Persecution, and this has been closed bythe inclusion of extracts from Porphyry of
Tyres writings criticalofChristianity.Inreturnsomedocumentsoflessimportanceinthemselvesor
whichseemoveralongperiodtohaveformednopartofstudentsyllabuseshavebeenomied.
A major dicultyin usingtheNew Eusebius wasitsapparentabsenceofanimmediatelyrecogniz-
ablearrangementofthedocuments.TheplacingoftheDidache asDocument103,i.e.withdocuments
of near the end of the secondcentury,isacaseinpoint.Anarrangementhasnowbeenadoptedthat
