The MA in Education through the
University of London International

choice for two reasons. The frst
is the academic reputation of
the Institute of Education. Its
great to know Im studying at a
College that is world-leading in
its feld. And the University of

is so well-established that I felt
confdent about the distance
learning aspect of this course.
Its amazing to be in a tutor group

into a more global understanding
of whats happening right now.
Ive learned a lot about how to
conduct a good piece of research,
and due to my experience on

Module outlines
Leading and managing
educational change
and improvement
This module introduces some
of the basic theories relating to
leadership and management in
educational settings and considers
how they might work in a range of
situations and national cultures.
Students are made aware that
most theories of leadership and
management are Western in
nature and are encouraged to
consider their applicability to their
own cultural context. The individual
organisation is looked at from
the point of view of its structures,
its own institutional culture and
the way power is distributed.
The implications of the changing
division and allocation of power
between national and regional
government and the individual
educational institution are considered.
The key themes of institutional
efectiveness and educational
improvement and change are
introduced in this module along with
the related concept of evaluation.
Leadership for the
learning community
This module starts by considering
the question: what do we mean
by learning? It then goes on
to consider the implications
for leaders and managers if
they are to promote efective
learning and the role of the
wider community in supporting
and enabling learning.
The role of the staf within a
school, college or educational
system is key to success, and
this module considers two
ways in which human resource
management links to learning
and the implications of this
for leaders and managers.
The importance of continuing
professional development for staf
and the support and growth of
learning communities is stressed.
Finally, the module considers
the importance of practitioners
both using available research
evidence and data from
outside and from inside the
institution and system.
If you are studying on the MA
or Postgraduate Diploma, you
will then choose two modules
from the following options
according to your interests
and professional needs.
Finance and
resource management
Make your institution more
efcient, efective and equitable.
Improve your understanding of
fnancial management and the
fnancial systems within which
you operate. Develop skills of
costing, budgeting and planning.
Developing personal
leadership skills
This module builds on the theories
presented in the core modules to
develop leadership skills that will
beneft your organisation. Improve
your skills and insights as a leader
and manager of people utilising a
range of case studies. Understand
team building, decision-making and
confict resolution. Gain personal
skills such as time and stress
management and action planning.

Education
An introduction from Dr Clare Brooks | Programme Director
The MA in Education is ideal if
you work in teaching, education
management or policy, and want
to increase your understanding
of current education issues
and enhance your career. This
stimulating programme takes a
broad view of education, covering
themes such as: curriculum,
pedagogy, assessment, the
relationship between education
and society, and the importance
of education research. It is
designed to suit students across
the world, and explores the global
forces that infuence education,
encouraging you to relate your
learning to your context. You can
select optional modules from
specialist felds, to customise
your studies to your interests.
The excellent levels of personal
support include a personal tutor
for the duration of your studies.
You have access to an online
learning environment which has
discussion areas and links to online
resources and library support. The
core module What is Education?
is taught as an intensive two-week
programme in central London (and
is also available as an entirely online
module), and features keynotes from
world-class academics in education.
A exible curriculum
The MA in Education comprises
two compulsory core modules,
two option modules, plus a
dissertation. You can select option
modules from a variety of specialist
felds, to customise your course of
study to refect your professional
interests and needs. Modules are
available as distance learning,
face-to-face and mixed-mode.
The programme is fexible, so you
can take one or two modules a
year (or maybe more) and spread
your studies out as you see ft.
An international
dimension
All of the modules have an
international dimension, and
throughout the programme you
will be encouraged to consider
how the ideas discussed relate
to your individual context and
experience. The MA will boost
your understanding of education
and help you to develop your
career. The programme provides
the academic foundation you
need to take on leadership
roles and to make signifcant
contributions to the future of
children, learners and societies. It
is also an ideal preparation for an
EdD or PhD in education. You will
also enhance your critical thinking,
writing, and collaboration skills.

12
Postgraduate study programmes in Education
The MA degree consists
of four modules and a
dissertation as follows:
< two compulsory core
modules plus
< two further modules chosen
from a list of options plus
< a dissertation.
You can tailor your MA to suit
your particular interests and
needs. When considering which
option modules are best for
you, you need to consider:
Mode of study
You need to decide which modes of
study are open to you. Modules are
available as entirely distance learning
(for which you can be anywhere
in the world), or with some period
of study in London (normally a
regular weekly class over a ten week
period). Some modules combine
both distance learning with a short
period in London so it is important
to read the module descriptions
carefully. If you intend to be based
in or around London, you can select
modules in any category. Students
who do not intend to visit London
will need to ensure that they only
select distance learning modules.
Breadth and balance
You should ensure that your module
selection results in a broad and
balanced degree. To help you
select modules that are appropriate
for you, read the brief module
description carefully. When selecting
your modules, you may like to
consider: if the module content
interests you; if the timing of the
module is appropriate for you; if the
module has any additional entry
requirement you must meet.
Workload balance
When planning your programme
of study, consider your workload
and what is manageable. A full-
time student can study up to two
modules in one term (please see
pages 14-15 for term dates). A part-
time student should consider no
more than one module per term.
Programme information
Individual modules
Most core and optional modules are ofered
as credit-bearing individual modules. This
is an ideal option if youre keen to update
your professional knowledge, enhance
your career, or sample the programme.
Eleni Peppa
MA in Education student, Greece
The University of London has an excellent
reputation both in the UK and overseas. As
this is a distance learning programme, it did
not require me to travel to England and study
abroad, which meant I could keep my job and
at the same time study for a Masters degree.
I found the recorded lectures very helpful and
enlightening, giving me the sense of
attending the actual lecture in the
university. I found the Collaborate
sessions very helpful too. Apart
from giving me the opportunity
to talk about the readings we
had covered each week, it helped
me to meet other people on the
course and exchange ideas.

Elizabeth Dalling
MRes student, Sierra Leone
Having taken a career break to be with
our three sons, I became interested in
applied social research in international
development contexts. Though I had done
some informal research in my intercultural
work I lacked formal research skills so
needed a taught online Masters course
that would equip me with these. I looked
for a course and institution with a good
reputation that didnt require any contact
time in the UK. The MRes in Educational and
Social Research at the IOE was the obvious
choice as it emphasises both education
and social research more generally,
building on my previous experience.
I have loved the course so far. Ive always
enjoyed engaging with other cultures
so its been great learning with
people from all over the world.
Following the MRes Elizabeth
is hoping to nd work in applied
social research in Sierra Leone.

The course tutors are absolutely
outstanding. They have extensive
expertise in a wide range of
research methods which has made
my study experience thoroughly
enriching. The detailed and
very constructive feedback that
I have received from them has
proven to be truly intellectually
stimulating. Thanks to their
invaluable feedback, I am obtaining
far better grades in the course.
The defnitive advantage of the
distance learning study method is
that, despite the ongoing war in
Syria, it has enabled me to study at
a world renowned university. The
unfagging support I have received
from the MRes team has made it
possible for me to continue my
studies against all odds. I knew
from the beginning that studying
at a distance would take strong
determination and hard work, and
studying in a country that is going
through the devastation of war
means I need even more resolve
to succeed. So far, I have managed
to pull it of in spite of living in a
highly volatile situation. As they say:
where there is a will, there is a way.

Module outlines
In Approaches to educational
research you will begin to think
about how to formulate research
projects, and how to frame
research in relation to existing
literature. The module then looks
at a variety of design strategies
before examining some of the key
methodological debates within
these various designs. Through this
module you will gain experience
of identifying, using and searching
specialised literature sources, and
of thinking about how to review
and work with the literature you
fnd. You will also create a portfolio
of research ideas and projects to
work with in subsequent modules.
Research methods involves
looking at a broad range of
methods of data collection,
including questionnaires, interviews,
focus groups, observations, and
document analysis. The module
provides a detailed consideration
of the procedures involved in using
these various research strategies,
and looks at how to match
methods appropriately to research
questions through refections on
the advantages and disadvantages
of each method. You will gain
practical experience of applying
and evaluating all of these methods
and a broad understanding
of the methodological issues
of their application.
Writing and presenting
educational research provides
you with a detailed understanding
of the diferent ways in which
educational research can be
communicated. By considering a
variety of forms of dissemination,
such as peer reviewed journals,
conference presentations, and
professional reports, the module
enables you to develop an
awareness of the importance
of writing style for the efective
communication of ideas.
Research and the theoretical
eld focuses on the role of
theory within research, and
explores the relationship between
epistemological claims, assumptions
and debates and research ideas.
It also looks at the ways in which
specifc theoretical orientations
may be put to work within research
to form analytic orientations.
Qualitative data analysis provides
a framework for approaching the
analysis of qualitative data. It looks
at various approaches to organizing,
representing and transcribing data
and involves working with data
in relation to a number of analytic
traditions including Thematic Analysis,
Critical Discourse Analysis, Rhetorical
Analysis and Conversation Analysis.
Quantitative data analysis
covers a wide range of methods
of quantitative data analysis
and deals with both conceptual
and practical aspects. The
module introduces exploratory
analysis, including descriptive
statistics for both summarising
univariate data and measures
of association for bivariate data,
hypothesis testing, and modeling
data by regression analysis.
The Dissertation module enables
you to create and work in detail
with an original piece of research.
Our interactive support network of
fellow students and research tutors
give you the opportunity to discuss
your research with other researchers.
