Abstract

This proposal introduces the growing entertainment company Instant Flix
whose focus is on the idea of Bringing The Big Screen To You. This company intends to
bring newly released movies to those individuals who are unable to go see a movie at a
movie theater or for those who just prefer to watch a movie in the comfort of their own
home. There is an immediate need for this company, as movie attendance has dropped over
the last several years due to over pricing and other inconveniences. Because of these
downfalls, it has greatly affected film studios and corporations with the continued loss of
profit and earnings. Instant Flix will help encourage individuals who do not visit the theater
to watch newly released movies at their home, significantly benefiting both the consumer
and film corporations.

2
Introduction
Current Situation

The movie theater has served as a source of entertainment for people of all ages, for
several decades. According to NPR movie critic Bob Mondello, the first public movie theater,
the Nickelodeon, opened in 1905 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Since then, the movie
theater has become a place to sit back, relax, have some popcorn, and watch a newly
released movie.
There is a need to address some of the problems and inconveniences of the movie
theater industry. The purpose of this plan is to enhance the customer experience and
convenience by providing detailed information about Instant Flix and its purpose. Instant
Flix is a new way for individuals to enjoy the entertainment of newly released movies at the
convenience of their home, while still providing the leisure and entertainment aspect as if at
a movie theater.
Problem
While movie theaters are present in most major cities, going to the movies can still be
an inconvenience for those with disabilities or lack of transportation. This is a problem
because, while these individuals have the wish and desire to see newly released movies, they
may not be able to do so, causing those individuals to miss the chance to see the most
anticipated movies. For those individuals under these circumstances, it not only affects
those individuals but also the movie companies and corporations, which leads to missing out
on valued business.
Not only is there an inconvenience issue, but going to the movie theater can also be
awfully expensive. According to the National Association of Theatre Owners, movie ticket
and concession prices increase drastically every year. When going to the movies, you cant
just think about the price in tickets and concessions, but also the amount of gas used, and
how it can affect the environment. This severe increase in price and gas makes it hard for

3
those who are and have been affected by the economic downfall, to pay or go to the movie
theaters.
Based on a survey our company conducted, the results displayed that most of the
participants would enjoy watching a newly released movie at the convenience of their
home. The participants even displayed that they felt going to the movie theater is an
inconvenience and most had to spend a great amount on travel time, gas, tickets, and
concessions at the movie theater. Unfortunately, when you take all of these problems and
results into consideration, going the movie theater can be inconvenient and a very
expensive source of entertainment.
Evidence
The Stanford Business article, Why Does Movie Popcorn Cost So Much? explains
why the concession prices are so high in the movie theater. In order for movie theater
companies to make a profit, it must raise prices on popcorn, drinks and candy. Along with
price hikes in tickets, this doesnt include snacks, drinks, gas money and any additional
money spent to get to the theater. Concession stand products are high because movie
theater companies do not profit enough on movie tickets alone. This low profit is due to the
fact that the movie theater companies must pay ninety cents to every dollar back to the
movie studios and corporations.
To display more evidence, consider the factual information provided below:
Wise Geek states that the average price for a movie ticket in 2012 is $8.12 US
dollars (USD). Popcorn costs about $6 USD, and a drink, about $4 USD. Thus, the
average expense at a theater is nearly $20 USD. For a family of four, thats close
to $80 USD for two hours of entertainment. The price for a movie ticket will
continue to rise.
A survey conducted by the American Association of Retired People show that 40%
of seniors no longer attend films because they can no longer afford the prices.

With the information provided, it displays that the total amount spent at the movie
theater is rising, and will continue to rise. Regrettably, due to the rise of movie tickets,
certain individuals cannot afford to go see a movie, which in return is not very profitable for
movie theater companies and movie corporations.

4
Relevant background
From all of the problems and evidence provided, this creates a need for a service that
allows people to watch newly released films from the comfort of their own homes. This
service would allow individuals of all circumstances to be able to have the experience of
going to the movie theater without having to go through the hassle that comes with it,
including: traveling far distances, lack of seating, long lines and a much lighter wallet. The
target audience may be familiar with movie and television show streaming applications such
as Netflix and Hulu, which offer similar characteristics from those of Instant Flix. The main
element not included within these applications, is the ability to watch newly released movies
only played at the movie theaters.

5
Plan
The solution we propose to fix the problems discussed, include establishing the
virtual company Instant Flix. Instant Flix will offer users the ability to stream newly released
movies through its website www.instantflix.com or with our Instant Flix Application,
available for both iPhone and Android users. This service will give all customers, no matter
their circumstances, the ability to watch new movies from their homes, while ditching the
hassles that come with going to a physical movie theater.
Mission Statement:
It is our mission to provide customers with a convenient and adequate way to
watch newly released movies at a fair and decent price.
Objective
Our plan is to review how Instant Flix is beneficial in the long run. We have set a few
objectives that we are planning to achieve in the next six months:
Obtain newly released movies in high quality from top movie business distributors, at
a reasonable price: a monthly subscription fee of $8 + $15 per movie.
Double the number of subscriptions from start-up date
Spread awareness of Instant Flix in the market
Fast and effective customer service through the 1-800 phone line
Making both Instant Flix, and movie corporations profitable
Improve our Application to work with not only Android and iPhone users, but with
Blackberry and Window phone users as well
Established Industry
Although there are other companies similar to Instant Flix, such as Netflix and Hulu,
neither offer newly released movies. Some users of Netflix or Hulu may argue that they
could simply order the movies out in theaters at a later time, but that doesnt give the user a
chance to see them while the movies first come out. This is a problem when it comes to
spoiler issues. The price for the application or streaming of Instant Flix will be more than
Netflix or Hulus $8 average price; but receiving newly released movies from the comfort of
the users home is worth the price difference.

6

Benefits

7
In todays society, money and expenses are such important factors when it comes to
doing anything. Instant Flix will provide you with the opportunity to watch new movie
releases at the convenience of your home. This service offers the best newly released
movies from all genres, including action, comedy, drama and horror. Our motto, Bringing
the Big Screen Home To You, is what we plan to do. It will allow people who cannot go to
the movie theater because of illnesses, lack of transportation, inconvenience or busyness,
the ability to watch a newly released movie. Here at Instant Flix, we try to help provide the
best source of entertainment for anyone, anywhere.
We all know that families and individuals are very busy; with our service all of these
people will be able to watch new movies when they are first released. Users will get the
chance to watch at home and at their own leisure time. Also, going to the movie theater
costs about $20 per person when including the price of the movie ticket, snacks, drinks and
gas to get there. We offer the same movies that are showing at the theater, but without the
hassle and additional spending. Furthermore, watching movies at home is less restrictive
than watching a movie in a theater. One can speak to a friend, text and talk on the phone
without annoying others around them. Making Instant Flix the first choice of movie
entertainment purposes will be very beneficial not only for our users, but for the movie
studio corporations. Unlike the movie theaters, Instant Flix wishes to provide reasonable
prices so that both Instant Flix, and movie studio corporations can become sustainable and
profitable.
Another benefit to watching a movie at home compared to the theater is that the
movie can be paused at anytime when you are home. At a theater, if there is an emergency
or you need a refill on your drink, there is no way to pause the movie. This is frustrating for
the fact that you will miss some parts of the movie plus, more importantly, you paid full price
for a movie that you want to see every part of it.
Finally, a major problem that some people face with going to movie theater is the
cleanness of the place. There is no law that strict movie theaters to clean their seats, and
with many people seating on the same seats over the years, there are many bacteria and
yeast found in the arm set, seats and other areas in the theater. Therefore, staying at home

8
to watch the movie that you want will not just save you money but will save you from the
bacteria lurking around the theater.
Supporting Instant Flix would also be beneficial because we provide not only a one
free movie trial but also a survey at the end of each movie, so we can keep up with providing
customer satisfaction. We want to offer and maintain a lasting relationship with our users
and clients from day one and into the near future. We believe user and client satisfaction is
the most important service to offer.

9
Approach
Schedule
Instant Flix is serious about the services that we provide and want our users and
clients to be satisfied and pleased when using our services. Here at Instant Flix we want the
customer to know and understand the service they are receiving, why they need it, and how
our service will be beneficial for them to have. Working closely with our users and or clients
helps all of us get a better feel of what exactly Instant Flix provides and what we will need to
do to always improve our service.
The first thing Instant Flix will do is work through the planning phase with the movie
distributors, and movie studios. One of the most important steps we would like to do is get a
visual and an understanding of what our clients feel about Instant Flix and what they see this
service becoming. After this step is completed, we will present this information to movie
studios and corporations for approval or any changed that may be needed. After allowing a
week for the approval process to happen, a budget will be presented for the service. We
wish to work close with both our customers and clients to the best of our abilities to fit
within their budget and finances. For both the steps mentioned, these steps will take about
two or more weeks to finish because of the communication and the drawing up of effective
plans and agreements needed for this service.
After an agreement and plan is developed, the beginning of our website and
application development will begin. We wish to have any IT services completed needed in
about one month, so our website and application can be client tested and run by to fix any
errors found. If any code needs to be fixed, this should be done in about a week. After fixing
any code, we wish to then provide usability testing with numerous customers to make
certain everything is running smoothly, and to gather any feedback from our customers. We
will use any feedback given to implement in our services and if provided any, any needed
and useful feedback will be implemented in about two weeks.

10
After about a month of testing and preparation, we will then begin to determine the
release date of our service. This date will be agreed with both Instant Flix and our clients.
After this is determined, we will then market our service with commercials, Internet
advertising, and with permission by Netflix and other sister services. Instant Flix wishes to
allow a couple months of advertising to ensure a good customer base. Throughout the
marketing process, we will continue to complete usability testing, to ensure Instant Flix is a
high quality service. When those months are over, the release of Instant Flix will occur.
Costs/Budget
Once finalizing a schedule and plan, Instant Flix will use the money provided by our
investors in the development process of our website and application, as well using the
money with the marketing of our service. We will need to also use money to pay for
materials, supplies, support staff, and personnel. Instant Flix hopes to make a profit
between $100,000 - $400,000 in the first six months, customer based.

Management
Netflix, a similar company to Instant Flix, has grown tremendously over the past
several years. Their income and profit has increased greatly after years of expansion and
marketing. Some of Netflix associated executives say the most important way to run a
business is through customer satisfaction. The way you market and distribute your service is
very important as well. You should take in all expenses, income and revenues to determine
the financial state of a company.

Here is a chart showing their income, profits and expenses in 2011 (quarterly):

12
Evaluation
The success of this plan will be measured by how many people sign up and stream
movies on our website and/or mobile application. Both the website and application will ask
for the customers payment method, email and other relevant information when purchasing
movies that will be recorded so the company can measure customers use of our services.
We will also gauge customer satisfaction by keeping a record of customer complaints,
concerns, questions and positive feedback we receive through our 1-800 number phone line
and by our customer survey given at the end of each movie watched. Along with measuring
the success of our services, we will also use customer feedback to improve our services as
Instant Flix grows.
We hope to begin our plan within six months. Once our proposal is put into action,
the Instant Flix team will keep virtual records of those who register and purchase movies
through the company website or application. We hope to make at lease $45,000 in profit
alone for Instant Flix and a total of $100,000 of profit, giving the rest to both movie studios
and distributors.

Appendix B Supporting Information

Money.CNN states:
Most of the money from ticket sales goes back to the movie studio. A film booker leases a
movie to a particular theater for a set period of weeks. The percentage of ticket sales that

20
the studio takes decreases on each week that a movie is in the theater. If the screening was
arranged by an independent middleman, he also takes a slice. So the movie has to pull in
sizeable audiences for several weeks in order for theater owners to make any serious
profits. During the film's opening week, the studio might take 70 to 80 percent of gross box
office sales. By the fifth or sixth week, the percentage the studio takes will likely shrink to
about 35 percent, said Steven Krams, president of International Cinema Equipment Co.

Entertainment.howstuffworks.com states:
There are two ways for a theater to lease a movie:
Bidding
Percentage
Bidding requires that the theater agree to pay a fixed amount for the right to show the
movie. For example, a theater might bid $100,000 for a four-week engagement of a new
movie. During that time, it could make $125,000 for a profit of $25,000. Or it might take in
only $75,000, which means the theater has a loss of $25,000. Few distribution companies use
bidding anymore. Most agreements are for a percentage of the box office (ticket sales).
In this sort of deal, the distributor and the theater agree to several terms:
The theater negotiates the amount of the house allowance, or nut, with the distributor.
This is a set figure to cover basic expenses each week.
The percentage split for the net box office is set. This is the amount of box office left after
the deduction of the house allowance.
The percentage split for the gross box office is set.
The length of engagement is set (typically four weeks).
The distributor will get the vast majority of the money made by the movie. The agreement
gives the distributor the agreed-upon percentage of the net box office or gross box office,
whichever is greater. The way this works is amazing!

In class we picked out our groups for this project and my group members include Malak
Abukhamsin, Marissa McLaughlin, Ashley Speece, and myself. We then all discussed some
proposal ideas and decided on one. We decided to choose the idea of having the service of
newly released movies provided at home. Ashley Speece thought of the name of our service,
Instant Flix. Lastly, we all decided on job titles, CEO, COO, CFO, CIO. For homework we were
all to create and brainstorm logos and slogans for our company.
Wednesday, June 18
In class we met up in a group and chose my logo that I created, and then we chose the
slogan Ashley Speece created Bringing the big screen home to you. For homework we
were to begin our sections we were assigned, and I began to work on the title page,
letterhead, and my qualification.
Thursday, June 19
In class our group met again and went over the letterhead and title page that I created,
getting feedback, and advice. We then discussed specifically what our service would
provide, how it would provide, and why it would provide its services. We also discussed the
business card and again broke into sections for which we were to do at home. For
homework, I finished the title page, letterhead, and added to the sections of our proposal
that was added to the Google Doc.

Friday, June 20
In class we reviewed certain material and reminded people of what they need to get done at
home. I continued to edit and add to sections on the Google doc, as well as beginning to

We chose group members for the proposal project (Ashley Rau, Malak Abukhamsin and
Marissa McLaughlin). We decided on the proposal topic in class, which is having new movies
that are out in theaters streamed through a website and through an application. We decided
on this topic due to the convenience, saving gas, people with disabilities and other relevant
needs. I thought of the company name, Instant Flix. We also decided on our roles in class so
that we could work on our qualification biographies. My role for our project is CIO. For
homework, we brainstormed logos and slogans for our company.
Wednesday, June 18:
I thought of our company slogan, Instant Flix: Bringing the big screen home to you. I also
wrote my biography as the role of project manager. In class, the group discussed logos that
Rau and Abukhamsin made. We decided on one of Raus logos. For homework, I added
information to the proposal introduction that McLaughlin had started the night before and
created a flyer for our company.
Thursday, June 19:
During class our group collaborated on the design for our company letterhead. We
discussed in further detail how we would use the phone application and website for the
services we would be providing. We also discussed the design for our company business
card that McLaughlin had started. For homework, I added part of the plan section to our
proposal and did some extensive research.
Friday, June 20:
I began adding information to the evaluation section of the proposal and edited the benefits
section as well. We continued to collaborate and make sure we all agreed on design
elements for the supplemental materials (such as the business card, letterhead and flyer).

Sunday, June 22:
I helped finish up edit last minute details for the written proposal part. Rau printed and put
the proposal documents together in a folder.
Monday, June 23:
Our proposal was printed and ready for our presentation in class today at 3 p.m.
