By stating the limiting structural fre
temperature on the drawings, the cost
of the clients fre protection can be
dramatically reduced.
STEP 1
At the Loading Details screen, click on
Building Type, and the appropriate

CELLBEAM AutoMate then generates
the correct partial safety factors for
the fre design in accordance with BS
5950 Part 8.
STEP
The printout of the subsequent beam
design will now show the important
fre data:
It is extremely helpful to fre protection
companies if the Engineer shows the
key data on the drawings, ie:
Limiting temperature for
Web and Flange
Section factor
The Engineer does not necessarily
specify the fre protection type or
thickness.

Introduction
The USFB (Ultra Shallow Floor Beam) is a new
generation of beam, which massively extends the
existing range of steel options available for the fat slab
market. USFBs can be as shallow as 160mm, making
them ideal for projects in the Residential, Health,
and Education sectors in particular.
The USFB software has been developed, written
and is maintained by the SCI. The input of the spans,
centres, slab data and loadings is similar to the well
established CELLBEAM software. The following section
shows the use of the AutoMate function to design
the USFB to the required parameters.

Introduction
The CellVibe software has been written by the SCI
in conjunction with SCI P354, The Design Guide On
The Vibration of Floors. The software considers walking
activities only - for other situations contact Westok
or the SCI.

For a simple grid arrangement the software calculates
the critical response factors (Multiplying Factors) of the
foor under consideration. The response factor R is a
multiplier on the level of vibration at the average threshold
of human perception. Response factors consider the
amplitude (acceleration) and frequency of the vibration.
To use the CellVibe software a saved CELLBEAM or
USFB design fle has to be imported. CellVibe can be
accessed directly from the CELLBEAM or USFB software
packages, or may be run independently of these.

STEP 1
Enter the number of bays in the
X and Y directions to be considered.
A maximum of 6 x 6 bays may be
specifed, although for design only
four bays are included in the
calculation, in accordance with P354.

STEP
Select the beam type Cellbeam
or USFB.
Tick the Composite box as
appropriate.
Note that importing beams does not
identify the method of design.

STEP 3
Select the number of intermediate
Secondary beams.
For Cellular Beams, up to two
intermediate beams may be specifed.
For USFBs these are assumed on the
column line only. All bays are assumed
to have identical beam arrangements.
Select the support condition for the
beams, and whether the perimeter
beam supports cladding or not.
Note that edge beams are assumed
similar to internal members in all
cases.
STEP 4
Highlight the bay of the beam to be
imported in the zone by clicking on
one of the beams in that bay.

19

STEP 5
Select Import data and import the
data for either a Cellular beam or
USFB.
STEP 6
Copy beam data to the other bays as
necessary by selecting Copy Beam
Properties and then clicking on the
bay to receive the data. Repeat as
necessary.
Additional (Westok and non-Westok)
beams may also be input to other bays
by selecting the appropriate tee
sections and overall depth.
If preferred, the user may input their
own defection criteria, taken from an
appropriate design source. It should be
noted that this is the defection due to
dead +10% imposed loading.

STEP 7
Click on the bays in the opposite
direction. Either import the beam data
or enter the section sizes and fnished
beam depth, to the remaining bays.
The internal (not the perimeter) beam
should be selected for a multi-bay
arrangement.
Perimeter beams are assumed to
be stiffened by perimeter cladding.
Where this is not so, the beam is
assumed to be identical to the
internal member.

STEP 8
In the Deck Details section check
Slab Details and Loading Details.
For each, a new window will
appear.
The slab Dynamic Inertia is
worked out by the software.
However, the user may input their
own value if appropriate.
Note:
The slab Dynamic Inertia must
be in Steel units, with the relevant
Modular ratio applied.
USER GUIDE Westok Design Suite
STEP 9
Amend the data in the
Design Criteria section as required.
If known, actual damping values may
be used - otherwise P354 values
should be selected.
STEP 10
Click Analyse. The Response Factor
for the critical bay is displayed in a
new window.
The designer can interrogate
the plan to obtain the
Fundamental Frequency and
Modal Mass for individual bays,
by hovering over the bay.
Acceptability for various building
usages against either BS or SCI
guidance are indicated on the table.
Where the foor response shown as
inadequate for the proposed usage,
the designer may consider the VDV
approach using the SCI Guidance
in P354.
