Lecture-1:

Managerial communication is a single term used for referring to communication involving

product or service promotion, flow of information in an organization, flow of official orders in
a business. In our first class of Managerial Communication, we were introduced to the term
of course title and the importance of communication for managers. It left me astonished to
learn the significance of communication for the survival of an organization.
Managers of any organization work as liaison between the producers of the product and the
consumers. Their work does not involve in production. Rather use their knowledge to ensure
the produced products are sold to the customers in a proper way. Also managers are
involved in maintaining order in an organization. In an organization managers are required to
exchange information constantly and enable others to pursue the organization. In every way
of these processes, all managers need to do is communication.
From theoretical marking point of view, in this era, the market faces very tight competition.
Companies have to play into the rigid market share and survive. In this open economy,
hyper competition exists. It is difficult to come up with a differentiated product. Because
newly introduced products are very often copied by the competitors. Also differentiated
pricing is a rare concept nowadays, as consumers are open to free flow of information. If any
differences in pricing occur, consumers get the information over various sources of
information. Consumers are very likely to respond to pricing in almost homogenous market
and the competitors are likely to follow the pricing strategies. So there is very little scope for
companies to create an exclusive market. To retain and expand their current market share,
companies need to offer differentiated services to the customers. It is necessary to get
involved with the customers, make good customer relationships, understand the market
demands and necessities and customize products and services to that. If this is possible,
only then a company can create a loyal customer pool, which will remain with the company
even during tight competitions prevailing in the market. It is exciting for me to learn the use
of communication as a way of surviving in the rigid market situation.
In a nutshell, communication is most important managerial skill and important for
organization survival. It is also important to learn, unlearn and relearn for managers to adapt
to the changing business environment. All these require the ability to communicate. This is
the main learning from my first class of managerial communication. Other than this lesson,
our instructor explained us how the whole managerial communication course will be
conducted. Directions regarding course rules, process and code of conduct were also given.

Lecture- 2:
After understanding the definition of communication and its importance, next we understood
the other sides of communication. First of all, the problem of meaning was explained. It can
be interrelated to miscommunication as well. Different people can have different perception
on a single term. Multiple meaning of a term can be a crucial source of miscommunication.
Sender or the communicator has to understand that differences in meaning can occur. Thus
messenger is responsible to under the various perception of the audience and act
accordingly. This breaks my long holding belief that the audience is also accountable for
making successful communication. Rather the sender of the message has to think, learn and
deliver the effective way to express views.
There are different purposes of communication. The purposes can be tangible and
intangible. Tangible purposes are very basic to an organization, for example- selling goods
can be a purpose of communication. On the other hand, building good relationship with
customers is intangible purpose of communication. Communication has to make sure that
the audience understands the core purpose of any communication.
Communication consists of personal skills. It means sharing ideas, views and emotions.
Wherever communication occurs, there will be sharing or exchange of something. Exchange
of views can also happen in the form of agreement. Without any sharing, communication
cannot prevail.
Communication can be verbal and non-verbal. Verbal communication can be written or
spoken. For most of us, communication actually means the verbal communication. But
during the course I also found out that non-verbal communication is a rather complex and
more significant way of communication. It includes gesture, posture, use of colors, way of
dressing, culture etc. It is crucial to understand the proper way of non verbal communication
for successful communication process.
To become an effective communicator, some communication skills have to be built.
Traditionally there are 4 basic communication skills, which are reading, writing, speaking and
listening. From my previous experiences, it has been seen that everyone put more emphasis
on fort 3 communication skills. Listening skill is often neglected as a skill to be developed.
Astoundingly, I learned that listening skills can be very vital for communication skills. Only
hearing to others does not limit the listening skills. Listening involves hearing, thinking and
understanding others emotions, expressions and views. Thus in the new paradigm of
communication, thinking has been given a great importance. Also all the skills are
interrelated and they altogether are needed for effective communication.
I used to limit myself in explicit communication until I found out the importance of implicit
communication. From now on, while communication, I will not only be speaking or listening,
but also thinking the implicit meaning of communication. This is the more effective way of
communication.
Finally communication can be operational or personal. Operational communication can be
internal or external. I learned to use the right form of communication according to the
situational necessity.
