Aereco brochure I Update 06.2010
Pollution exists in various forms it can be produced by the
human metabolism as we go about our day-to-day lives, our
activity or by constitutive dwelling materials.
Humidity: a determining factor for a healthy building and
healthy occupants
In liquid or vapour form, water appears as the rst cause of
problems in the building sector. Small quantities of vapour
are enough to cause a direct and indirect eect both on
the occupants health and on the building. It is a fact that
an amount of moisture ranging between 40% and 60% is
essential for the correct functioning of the respiratory system,
but too much moisture is harmful for the building and for
its occupants. In new or thermally renovated buildings, the
lack of ventilation associated with higher insulation and
better airtightness can cause signicant damage allowing
condensation to form on thermal bridges, glazing, vapour
control layer tted on the insulation material, as well as
deterioration of the inner walls insulation.
The main causes of excess moisture come from human
activity: water vapour produced by breathing and evaporation
from domestic activities (washing, cooking, drying clothes
etc.), even a large quantity of indoor plants can contribute to
raising the inner humidity rate.

A high moisture content generates the presence of bio-
contaminators
High relative moisture content in the interior air increases the risk
of infestation by dust mites and creates condensation on cold
zones and surfaces, which are predisposing factors for fungal and
bacterial proliferation. Certain viruses and bacteria, once released
by humans or animals, do not survive a long time in the air, but
others can remain for months and even years on wet surfaces.
Dust mites can proliferate only under optimal conditions of heat
and moisture necessary for their development: 24C and 75% of
relative humidity. A drop in the water content of just 5% divides
by six the number of dust mites. They completely disappear with
relative moisture lower than 45%.
More than 100.000 species of microscopic moulds exist which can
generate a large quantity of malodorous volatile organic compounds
(VOC). Toxic compounds are also emitted by the deterioration of
materials due to excess moisture.
It is thus necessary to control eectively the relative humidity rate
in a dwelling by an ecient ventilation system which takes all this
into account, in order to stabilise it at a level between 40-50% of
relative humidity.
7
Humidity: a determining factor
Aereco brochure I Update 06.2010
VOC: dangerous pollutants
Several studies carried out in various countries throughout the
world show that, especially when ventilation is failing, many
pollutants are present in our dwellings at thresholds signicantly
higher than existing standards and WHO recommendations. Products
in question include paint, wallpapers, vitrifying products, laminated
oor coverings, polishes, aerosol cans, kerosene stoves, and perfumes
- among others.
We often associate pollution with the poor quality of the surrounding
air, blaming it on industrial emissions and motor vehicles. More than
half the time this is not so and it is actually necessary to examine the
air quality of the place we live our home. It is regrettable to note that
the environment in the house is seldom on the front page of the media,
whereas its impact on health is even more important than that of the
external environment.
Carbon dioxide (CO
2
) and other pollutants
The presence of CO
2
in a dwelling is mainly due to people breathing.
Studies show that breathing is accompanied by water vapour emissions
with a person emitting on average 19 l/h of CO
2
by breathing.
Among the various pollutants found in dwellings accompanied by various
degrees of danger to health, let us quote carbon monoxide produced
by heating systems and gas cooking and by smoking tobacco; radon,
asbestos, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and nitrogen dioxide (NO
2
) as the ones
to be particularly concerned about. Other high-risk contributors are
bio-contaminants such as dust mites, microbes, mould, etc.
There is only one solution to eectively evacuate all these pollutants:
ventilation. It is a vital need and an essential requirement for good
health.
8
Various origins of indoor pollution
9
2 1
Ventilate to adapt to the new energy performances of the buildings
Because of new energy and acoustic requirements for
dwellings, new constructions and renovated buildings
are now basically an envelope with reinforced insulation
and sealing (picture n.2), while older buildings are
generally over-ventilated (picture n.1) due to windows
and outside walls being leaky due to bad insulation.
Whereas the main thermal issues have been solved
compared to older constructions (picture n.1), new
problems have appeared. In new building and
refurbishments, when ventilation is absent or insucient,
the new air cannot enter, which generates visible problems:
air quality decreases (picture n.2) and the excess humidity
condenses on the coldest parts of the dwelling.
It is therefore necessary to recreate openings for new air to
circulate through the dwelling. To overcome problems, it is
necessary to recreate a ventilation circuit. Fresh new air is
brought into the least polluted rooms and polluted air is
extracted through wet rooms.
The steps to take:
- place air inlets in habitable rooms to introduce air
into the dwelling,
- ensure the circulation of the air inside the dwelling
by leaving sucient gap under interior doors,
- place grilles or extract units, connected to a
vertical/horizontal duct or to a fan, in wet rooms
(kitchen, bathroom and toilets). These will ensure
the extraction of the air (the air is able to enter by
the habitable rooms only because it is extracted in
wet rooms).

Ventilate Right
This is the concept that underlines the design of all Aereco ventilation
products. The passive* components of the ventilation system are
controlled and activated in various ways according to the needs for
each room and what is happening in them. Four principal action modes
are distinguished:
Humidity sensitive airow, created by Aereco in 1984
Manually activated airow
Airow activated by a presence detection sensor
Airow activated by a movement detection sensor
* passive indicates here the components of the network not generating
any mechanical energy to ensure ventilation, but simply acting on a bypass
section to impose a ow. Fans are known as active components.
Humidity sensitive airow
Principle: the air cross-section is modulated according to the local
relative humidity rate.
As detector and motor of the humidity sensitive products, the V8 sensor
exploits a well-known physical phenomenon: the properties of some
fabrics lengthen when humidity increases in the air and shorten when
the humidity level is lower. On this principle, the 8** polyamide bands
of the V8 sensor activate one or more shutters, thereby determining the
passage of the air according to the ambient relative humidity rate. The
greater the humidity within the building, the more the shutters open.
The V8 sensor is isolated from the incoming airow; it only measures
the interior moisture content. Moreover, thanks to a thermal correction,
the opening of the shutters is carried out independently of the external
climatic conditions.
** also exist in 16 bands (V16)
Aerecos humidity sensitive technology is applied to humidity sensitive
air inlets; grilles and extract units located in rooms where the humidity
reveals the level of interior pollution (lounge, bedrooms, bathrooms).
humidity sensitive mechanism of an Aereco air inlet
10
Manually activated airow (1)
Principle: to allow the occupant to increase the extract airow at times of
intensive pollution.
When the humidity is not sucient to reveal a state of high pollution (use
of the kitchen, toilets) the occupant can manually activate peak airow at
the extract unit to quickly evacuate the foul air, bad smells and any excess
moisture. This boost can be activated by means of a pushbutton (on-o
switch) or by pulling a cord. This function can also supplement a humidity
sensitive function on an extract unit. The manual airow is applied to
the extract units with manual boost, in rooms where the humidity is not
sucient to reveal the pollution level (toilets, kitchens, etc).
Airow activated by a presence detection sensor (2)
Principle: to automatically increase the airow when a presence is detected
in the room.
The presence of somebody in the room is sucient to automatically activate
the Eyebooster presence detector. It then generates the opening of the
shutters of the extract unit at maximum airow. This process is used when
moisture is not sucient to reveal a high pollution level (use of the toilets,
random occupation in oces, etc.). This technology makes it possible to
carry out energy savings over the period of non-detection, while returning
to the basic, or humidity sensitive, airow.
The Eyebooster module is composed of a pyroelectric sensor that detects
the convergent infrared rays through a Fresnel lens. With a 4m zone and a
100 angle of detection, this is very ecient. The infra-red rays concentrated
on the sensor are continually analysed; as soon as a variation is perceived,
a signal is sent to the electronic board which analyses it and then activates
the motor controlling the opening of the extract unit shutters. The presence
detection technology is used on extract units and mechanical ventilation
terminals in rooms where humidity is not sucient to reveal the pollution
level (toilets, oces, etc).
Airow activated by an agitation detection sensor (3)
Principle: to control the airow automatically, proportional to the activity
in the room.
The detection mode is the same as for presence (Eyebooster module). The
dierence is at the level of the analysis of the received signal. The greater
zone of detection is divided in a multitude of small zones. The electronic
card then analyses the signal received in order to deduct a movement
quantity directly related to the number of variations in infra-red radiations
registered from one zone to another by intervals of time. The movement
detection technology is used to control special air inlets and outlets, or
even the working of the fan in rooms where the humidity is not sucient
to reveal the level of pollution (rooms with a great variability of occupation
like conference rooms, classrooms, etc.).

A technical response to each need
Aereco brochure I Update 06.2010
To achieve good ventilation means you must have a good choice of ventilation techniques. The selected technique depends on the objectives
laid down in the project (reduction of heating costs, improvement of the air quality, reduction in running costs, simplicity of maintenance, etc.) but
more specically depends on the environment. This is particularly true in case of refurbishment since the technique must be adapted to existing
architecture.
Controlled mechanical ventilation: collective treatment for apartments
Renewal of the air in buildings is ensured by the presence of a fan (3). This is located in the roof or other convenient outside location. In mechanical
humidity sensitive ventilation, the air extracted through the extract units (2) from the wet rooms imposes the air renewal of the entire dwelling. Only
humidity sensitive air inlets (1) are then able to distribute the new air according to the needs of each main room. The humidity sensitive/presence
detection extract units make it possible to distribute the available airow generated by the fan according to the needs of each wet room, in each
dwelling. So rooms, or dwellings, with high requirements in new air promote greater airow than empty ones.

12
Which ventilation system?
Controlled mechanical ventilation: individual treatment for apartments
In this case, the fan is placed inside the dwelling. This treatment is also applicable for individual houses as well as apartments. The localisation of
the fan inside the dwelling provides the advantage of making it directly accessible, which is a welcome advantage when it comes to maintenance.
As before, the air renewal in the dwelling is ensured by the presence of a fan (3). In mechanical humidity sensitive ventilation, the air extracted
though the extract units (2) from the wet rooms imposes the renewal of air in the entire dwelling. Only humidity sensitive air inlets (1) are then able
to distribute the new air according to the needs of each main room. The humidity sensitive/presence detection extract units make it possible to
distribute the available airow generated by the fan according to the needs of each wet room. So rooms with high requirements in new air promote
greater airow than the empty rooms.

Controlled mechanical ventilation: performance and control
Aereco brochure I Update 06.2010
Controlled mechanical ventilation - individual house
Here, air renewal is ensured by the presence of a single fan (3). When silent the fan can be placed in a cupboard/ceiling void, which allows for easy
maintenance. Alternatively it can also be placed in the attic when the fan does not have any acoustic properties.
In humidity sensitive mechanical ventilation, the air extracted through the extract units (2) from the wet rooms imposes the air renewal of the entire
dwelling. Only humidity sensitive air inlets (1) are then able to distribute the new air according to the needs of each of the main rooms. The humidity
sensitive/presence detection extract units make it possible to distribute the available airow generated by the fan according to the needs of each
wet room. So rooms with high requirements in new air dispose of a more important pressure and airow than the empty rooms.

14
Controlled mechanical ventilation: performance and control
Passive stack ventilation - collective treatment for apartments
Passive stack ventilation exploits the natural forces (wind and stack eect) in order to renew the air within the dwellings. These forces create a pres-
sure in the ventilation duct (3) that starts air circulation from the inside of the dwelling towards the ventilation duct and then outside. The polluted
air is then replaced via humidity sensitive air inlets (1) located above windows in habitable rooms (bedrooms and living room).
The air is evacuated through the wet rooms (toilets, bathroom, kitchen) through extract grilles (2): this principle is called sweeping. Depending
upon natural forces (wind and stack eect) the passive stack ventilation may be random: it is therefore necessary to control it. The humidity sensi-
tive process, while measuring the humidity rate in order to determine the necessary airow, gives an appropriated answer to the variability of the
natural forces. In addition to its energy saving attributes (no fan) the rst qualities of this ventilation technique are its acoustics (low air speeds) and
simplicity of maintenance.

Hybrid ventilation - collective treatment for apartments
Between passive stack ventilation and mechanical ventilation, the hybrid ventilation is a modern concept which consists in using the components
and dimensioning of the passive stack ventilation ducts coupled to a nonpermanent low pressure mechanical assistance. The mechanical assistance
is used only when the natural forces are not sucient to ensure the required airow. Its start-up is automatic; it can be activated by a temperature
sensor or a pressure controller. The air is admitted by humidity sensitive air inlets in the main rooms (bedrooms and living rooms) ; it is evacuated
through wet rooms (toilets, bathroom, kitchen) through humidity sensitive extract grilles (2). These components make it possible to control the
airows according to the needs for each room.
The hybrid ventilation aims at combining the advantages of easy maintenance, energy savings, acoustics and reliability of the passive stack ventilation
with the airow performances of the mechanical ventilation.

Hybrid ventilation - Individual house
With hybrid ventilation the stack and the natural forces of the wind in the vertical duct, which is supplemented by fan assistance when necessary,
generate air circulation, as described on the previous page.
The air is admitted by humidity sensitive air inlets in the main rooms (bedrooms and living rooms); it is evacuated through wet rooms (toilets,
bathroom, kitchen) through humidity sensitive extract grilles (2), which are connected to the assistance fan. These components make it possible to
control the airows according to the needs for each room.
The low energy consumption and low speed of the fan mixed with its nonpermanent use provide real advantages of easy maintenance, energy
conservation, great acoustics, airow performances and reliability.

Aereco process constant airow ventilation
2
Aereco process constant airow ventilation
To meet this variable need the Aereco ventilation system oers an airow
directly depending on the level of inside pollution of each dwelling.
So, the increase of the inner pollution rate, usually accompanied by a
humidity rate increase, causes the opening of humidity sensitive air
inlets and extract units. In less occupied residences, the reduced use of
air bypass sections allows for energy savings.
Pressures and airows are re-balanced (3)
In collective buildings using in passive stack ventilation, the stack
eect naturally tends to support the lower oors at the expense
of the higher oors. In order to compensate for the dierence in
pollution and airow variations, humidity sensitive air inlets and
extract units are open more at the higher levels than at ground
oor level.
For similar occupation on each oor, the Aereco process
attenuates the airow variations, whereas the passive ventilation
generates greater airow disparities between the oors.
By oering airow adapted moment by moment to the needs of the
occupants inside the individual dwelling and collective buildings at
every moment, Aereco demand controlled ventilation components
decrease thermal losses due to ventilation, improve indoor air quality
and limit moisture problems caused by condensation.
Invented by Aereco in 1984, humidity sensitive ventilation is considered
as a major technological breakthrough among the demand controlled
ventilation systems today.
Intelligent distribution of the airow (1)
The Aereco process optimises air distribution within the dwelling: thanks to
the humidity sensitive air inlets, it prioritises channelling of the air towards
the rooms, which need it. Thus, it limits thermal losses in unoccupied rooms
and it makes good ventilation possible where it is necessary.
Because the number of occupants and activity in the dwellings vary, so
does the need for air renewal (2) vary from one moment to the next.

Comfort and energy savings: the secrets of the demand controlled ventilation
A protection against moisture
The rise of the inner humidity rate generated by
breathing and human activity in the kitchen or shower
can create destructive condensation, which in turn
can grow moulds. When the humidity rate increases
dangerously, humidity sensitive grilles and extract
units open more quickly to evacuate the excess of
moisture and eradicate the risk of condensation.
Reduced and controlled heating consumption
Ventilation is often considered to be responsible for
a great part of the thermal losses within a dwelling,
sometimes up to 50%. If that is true for the majority
of traditional ventilation processes, the Aereco
system makes it possible to preserve heat in less
occupied rooms and dwellings by automatically
reducing the airow. Aerecos performance in
this area is recognised by energy regulations in
several countries around the world.
Better air renewal for greater comfort
By prioritising ventilation for the places that need it most,
Aerecos demand controlled ventilation components
largely contribute to the improvement of air quality in
the dwelling.
When a main room is occupied, its relative humidity
rate increases; air inlets then open more to generate
greater airow and to better evacuate the polluted air.
Activity in wet rooms (kitchen, bathroom, toilets, etc.) is
accompanied by water vapour emissions; the opening of
the extract units increases with the relative humidity rate,
increasing the airow and thus evacuating more quickly
polluted air.

Monitoring the performance
Continuing measurement, study and analysis
of the behaviour of ventilation in order to
optimise the performance of our systems is,
and will always be, a major concern at Aereco.
By comparing theory and practice, eld
experiments and studies conducted in many
countries have helped to increase knowledge
about ventilation and conrm the performance
of Aereco ventilation systems. Examples of
large scale monitoring such as Performance
and HR-VENT have allowed us to test Aereco
Mechanical and Hybrid ventilation systems in-
situ.
The Performance project, applied on two
new buildings erected in Paris and near Lyon
(France) in 2007, has given us the opportunity
to measure precisely the eciency of the
humidity sensitive Mechanical Exhaust
Ventilation in general, and of the Aereco DCV
system in particular in a large set of dwellings.
A total of 30 occupied dwellings were
monitored over two years from November
2007 to measure representative parameters for
energy consumption and indoor air quality. The
monitoring has enabled better understanding
of the parameters, which can inuence the
ventilation performance.

As illustrated by the histogram on gure 1, the
measurements of CO
2
concentrations show that
the indoor air quality is ensured in a low occupied
bedroom (one adult blue) as well as in a high
occupied one (four adults pink). The peak of
CO
2
concentration has shifted from 700 ppm in
the low occupied bedroom to 950 ppm in the
highly occupied one, but even in that case, the
1500 ppm level was not exceeded more than a
very few hours in the heating season.
On the chart, gure 2, the eciency of the
humidity sensitive air inlet is conrmed on
a representative night time evolution when
compared with a simulated xed ventilation
system: while the humidity sensitive air inlet
maintains the CO
2
level below 1500 ppm, an
air inlet with a xed airow would have led to
a CO
2
level of over 2200 ppm.
The monitoring gave, in addition, the opportunity
to test the impact of the system in general on the
indoor air quality: the fan was stopped during
a short period (one month), and the results in
terms of CO
2
concentrations were compared
with the other months (with ventilation) of the
heating season. The histogram, gure 3, shows
as evidence the interest of the ventilation and
its positive impact on the IAQ. When the fan
was stopped a strong rise in CO
2
concentrations
(above 1900 ppm most of the time) could be
observed; moreover, no particular reaction came
from the occupants to compensate for the lack
of air renewal. This conrms the major role of
ventilation on IAQ and shows that occupants
are unaware of poor ventilation and dont
compensate, for instance, by opening windows.

Thermal losses due to the air renewal
The chart, gure 4, presents the average
measured equivalent airow for energy for
every dwelling in the monitoring sample
during a complete heating season. The
dwellings are sorted by type (number of main
rooms). The disparity of measured equivalent
airows results from the adaptation of the
ventilation system to various occupations,
activities, occupant behaviours and dwelling
sizes. The comparison with the French
regulatory reference (xed airow, grey bars)
shows the statistical airow reduction thus
the energy savings obtained by the DCV
system. The measured savings on the airow
for this project are evaluated at 30%. But this
good result actually hides a better one. A survey
showed that most of these dwellings are over-
occupied, especially on Paris site. When we
extrapolate this result to the statistical average
French occupancy for each type of dwellings,
the result is around 55% energy savings on the
ventilation heat losses. This statistical airow
reduction does not aect the IAQ; just the
opposite, a better IAQ in terms of CO
2
and
humidity has been proved, as shown before.
Results
The large scale in-situ monitoring of the
30 dwellings has demonstrated the good
performance of the tested DCV systems to reach
a high level of indoor air quality compared to a
xed ventilation system. The condensation risks
are negligible; the monitored system enabled
30% energy savings in comparison to the
regulatory xed airow on these over-occupied
dwellings. An extrapolation to the French
average statistical occupancy leads to 55%
energy savings on heat losses. Fan consumption
has been decreased between 35% and 50% on
the two sites. The monitored humidity sensitive
ventilation components have shown in-situ
working characteristics in compliance with the
laboratory tests, and seasonal airow Vs RH
behaviour favourable to the energy savings.
This project has also presented the occasion to
validate the hourly evaluation tool (SIREN) used
in France by CSTB for Technical Agreements.
With this new complete in-situ monitoring,
humidity sensitive ventilation and the Aereco
system have shown a high performance in
terms of indoor air quality as well as a huge
potential for saving energy on ventilation heat
losses.

~30% airow reduction
Performed in France
in Nangis (Paris area),
HR-VENT was an
experiment in occupied
housing wherein its
exceptional character
lies in its size as well as
in the implemented
measuring tools.
With more than 700
million data recorded during two years from
55 dwellings in ve buildings, the experiment
has given the opportunity to measure the
eciency of a new concept: a natural humidity
sensitive ventilation system assisted by a low
pressure fan with intermittent operation. From
January 2004 to December 2005, relative
humidity, temperature, pressure and extracted
airow data were recorded each minute,
in each wet room of every dwelling, using
specically developed sensors.
Measurements conrmed the performances
of the humidity sensitive ventilation system,
in particular its capacity to improve indoor
air quality, to decrease condensation risks
and to limit thermal losses. Its stabilising role
has been highlighted: it attenuates airow
imbalances between oors and limits airow
variations over the year by oering a real
control of the natural engines (wind and stack
eect). The mechanical assistance optimises
passive stack ventilation performances: with
a consumption of only 5W per dwelling, the
fan increases the pressure levels and thus
ensures healthy airows all year long, and
avoids reverse airow. Coupled with humidity
sensitive ventilation, the low pressure
mechanical assistance optimises the use of
natural forces: average airows are limited
in winter, contributing to energy savings,
and positive airows are assured all year, in
particular in hot season. In case of renovation,
the hybrid humidity sensitive ventilation
system oers comparable airows with those
required by the French regulations for new
buildings. Carried out in collaboration with
major French institutional partners such as the
CSTB and Gaz de France with ADEME nancial
support, HR-VENT has opened the door to
the development of innovative ventilation
solutions for residential buildings.

The essential, quite simply
In two airow models and three dierent colours, the
simple and robust design of the EMM humidity sensitive air
inlet has contributed to its success in many countries. With
its acoustic canopy, the EMM air inlet achieves an acoustic
attenuation of 37 dB.
Humidity sensitive system: modulates the airow
according to the local relative humidity rate.
Acoustic attenuation: up to Dn,e,w = 37 dB with
accessories.
Easy to maintain: no adjustment, simple yearly dusting.
Directional airow: adaptable to the conguration of
windows/ceiling.
Adapted to all congurations (1, 2)
The EMM air inlet is characterised by a directional base set
at installation that enables its air jet to be set according to
the position of the window relative to the ceiling (vertical 1,
oblique 2) ensuring maximum comfort for the occupants.
A closing device against coldness and strong winds (2)
A manual closing device available as an option or specic
version allows manual blocking of the air inlet in minimum
setting, in order to prevent the surrounding air from
entering. This option can be useful in countries where the
temperature can drop down very low during the winter
months.

The ecient wall mounted alternative
When installed on the wall or on a rolling shutter casing, the EHT humidity sensitive air
inlet is an ideal alternative to window mounted air inlets. It thus solves the problem of lack
of room on windows. With additional accessories, it reaches a high performance level of
acoustic protection. A closing device is also available to protect from cold weather and
strong winds.
Humidity sensitive system: modulates the airow according to the local relative humidity rate.
Core drilling: easy installation on the wall, particularly adapted to the refurbishment
projects.
Acoustic attenuation: up to Dn,e,w = 52 dB with accessories.
Easy to maintain: no adjustment, simple yearly-dusting, and easily accessible lters.
Simplied wall installation (1)
Easy to install in particular in refurbishment, the circular hole can be made using a core drill
100 mm, or 125 mm for the complete acoustic kit.
Ecient protection against the external noise pollution (1)
The complete acoustic kit of the EHT (EHT + duct 125 mm + acoustic foam + acoustic
canopy) allows to reach an acoustic attenuation Dn,e,w ( C ) = 52 dB, which places it among
the best products available on the market.
Insect lter (2)
When cleaning the insect lter nothing could be easier: Once the EHT is unclipped, the
removable lter F-EHT is easily accessible from the interior of the dwelling.
ACW: automatic airow controller (3)
The ACW makes it possible to limit the maximum airow to 40 m
3

Attractive integration and protection
External air inlet canopies are intended to protect the elements of the
frame (windows, casings) hosting the holes for air passage against
bad weather and water inltration. Their role is also aesthetic; they are
perfectly integrated into the frontage and windows. They can also oer
functions such as soundproong, insect protection, etc.

Total airow control
Not only does the AC external canopy protect the interior of the window from
water inltration when mounted face to an air inlet, it also keeps the airow
under a maximum level to avoid any over-ventilation. A patented internal
device limits the maximum airow when the pressure is too high, which makes
the AC canopy particularly suitable for high buildings or windy locations.
The AC external canopy can be installed with xed or humidity sensitive air
inlets while an integrated grille makes it possible to keep ying insects from
entering the dwelling.
Controls the airow to limit the impact of high pressures on the facade.
Protects the internal structure of window against water inltration.
Limits the air noise in windy conditions*.
Protects the dwelling from volatile insects.
It has the same screw spacing for direct replacement of the x as AS,
ASAM and A-EMM Aereco canopies.
Patented design to control the maximum airow (1, 2)
The AC external canopy is designed to automatically limit the airow
in case of high pressure thanks to a patented device. The mechanism
is composed of a silicon ap that moves according to the airow. It
automatically reduces the air section when the airow becomes too
high (see diagram in data sheet page 60).
Particularly suitable for the EFR manual setting air inlet (3)
Combined with the EFR manual setting air inlet (see technical data
page 61), the AC allows the occupant to manage the airow at every
moment: 5 positions from 6 m

The new BXC incorporates all the functions one could request from an air extract unit: various activation modes
such as humidity sensitive, presence detection or switch are available to adapt ventilation to occupants needs.
The exhausted airow is then automatically modulated, in total silence. The range of variable airows can be
set at installation to adapt to special requirements, or to compensate for lack of pressure. Commissioning is also
facilitated by the presence of a pressure plug, which enables measurement, and easy calculation of the airow.

Extract unit with presence detection
Detecting presence in an oce environment
TDA extract units directly adapt the extracted airow
to the presence detected in the room. A simple initial
adjustment of the basic airow according to the usual
number of occupants is sucient to ensure a permanent
air quality. When the room is unoccupied, the airow
is automatically reduced, allowing savings of 50% on
thermal losses due to ventilation.
Presence detection: starts the basic airow as soon as a
presence is detected.
Easy to maintain: removable grille for easy cleaning.
Smile: you have been detected (1)
The Eyebooster module is composed of a pyroelectric
sensor that detects the convergent infrared rays through
a Fresnel lens. With a 4 m zone of detection and a 100
angle of detection, this is very ecient. The infra-red rays
concentrated on the sensor are continually analysed; as
soon as a variation is perceived, a signal is sent to the
electronic board which analyses it and then activates the
motor controlling the opening of the extract unit shutters.
The presence detection technology is used on extract
units and mechanical ventilation terminals in rooms
where humidity is not sucient to reveal the pollution
level (toilets, oces, etc). Note that the electronic board
is able to tell the dierence between human heat and
heater or lights.
The basic airow is started as soon as a presence is
detected: the TDA returns to the reduced airow 20
minutes after the last detection. So, when the room is
empty, heating energy is saved (up to 50% compared to
xed ventilation with the same air quality).
Simple adjustment determines occupant numbers (2)
A cursor makes it possible at any time to set the number
of people in the oce, which determines the basic airow
activated during the detection process (from 25 to 100
m
3
/h).

Detecting movement in oces
The MDA module directly adapts the airow according to
the level of movement detected in the conference room,
classroom, etc. Integrated in the duct network and located
between a fan, a regulation module and a diuser, the MDA
is controlled by movement detectors covering the zones
of activity in the room. So, the MDA adapts the airow
proportionally to detected movement. The resultant
airow is moment by moment perfectly adapted to the
needs of air renewal and makes it possible to obtain
important energy saving. According to the occupation
scenario, it is easy to obtain up to 65% of energy saving in
comparison with xed airow ventilation.
Movement detection: modulates the airow according
to the detected movement level.
Airow is diused (no nuisance of draughts).
Ventilate according to movement
The MDA module works according to the same principle as
the Eyebooster module (see pages concerning TDA product).
The dierence is in the level of analysis of the received signal.
The greater detection zone is cut into a multitude of smaller
zones. The electronic board then analyses the received
signal to deduct a movement quantity directly linked to the
number of radiation variations registered from one zone to
another by intervals of time.
Discreet integration
Hidden in the ductwork, the MDA is invisible and can be
adapted to the existing dimensions of ventilation networks
for oce buildings such as conference room, classroom, etc.
Only the connected diuser and the lenses are visible.

Discretion and comfort in sanitary
installations
The best ventilation is the one nobody
notices. You will not notice the V2A fan:
quiet, easily hidden in wall cupboard or
in the loft space, you will simply assess
the quality of the air renewal and the
speed of humidity evacuation. Installed in
apartments or individual houses, the V2A
can connect up to two humidity sensitive
extract units located in bathrooms and
toilets. As far as consumption is concerned,
it is as energy eective as it is discreet with
its electronically managed low consumption
motor.
Silent:
Only 33 dB (A)* thanks to the high eciency
motor and strong soundproong.
Low energy consumption:
Only 5.5 W*, obtained with the control on the
electronic commutation motor.
Constant pressure:
Special for humidity sensitive extract units.
Easy to install:
Not cumbersome, directly installed in inhabited
space (wall cupboard, etc.).
Easy to maintain:
Simple yearly cleaning of a lter, easily accessible
without tools.
An intelligent motor (1)
The ECM motor (Electronic Commutation Motor)
of the V2A is driven by an electronic board, which
controls the speed. The motor speed associated
with a special wheel maintains the pressure at
80 Pa, to keep the airow proportional to the
variable cross section of the two connected
humidity sensitive extract units. Therefore,
electrical consumption and the noise emissions
are kept to a minimum.
Installation in close proximity to the
occupant (2)
Thanks to its silence and compactness, the
V2A can be installed directly in the inhabited

Acoustic whole house fan - 4 rooms
The V4A fan has been designed to ventilate a
complete dwelling, with up to four extract units
located in the kitchen, in the toilets and in the
bathrooms. The new Premium version benets
from an optimised motor and from a removable
electrical component to aid maintenance.
Easily hidden in a wall cupboard or in a false ceil-
ing, the V4A will provide you all the comfort and
air quality you can request from a low consump-
tion, silent fan.
When installed in apartments or individual
houses, maintenance is extremely easy because
its location inside the apartment.
Silent:
33 dB (A)*, thanks to a high eciency motor and
strong soundproong.
Low energy consumption:
Less than 13 W* (control on the electronic
commutation motor).
Constant pressure:
Especially for demand controlled extract units.
Easy to install:
Not cumbersome, directly installed in inhabited
space (wall cupboard, etc.).
Easy to maintain:
Simple yearly cleaning of the dismountable pro-
peller, accessible without tools. The motor can
be replaced without removing the fan.
An ecient motor
The V4As ECM motor (Electronic Commutation
Motor) is driven by an electronic card, which
controls the speed. The motor speed associated
with a special wheel makes it possible to main-
tain the pressure at 100 Pa. This way, the airow
is proportional to the variable cross section of
the connected demand controlled extract units.
Therefore, electrical consumption and noise
emissions are kept to a minimum.
Optimised for silence (1, 2)
The high eciency ECM motor is mounted on
exible links and is encased in a double-skin en-
velope (2): the V4A is totally optimised to work
silently for installation inside the dwelling.
User-friendly maintenance (3, 4)
Maintenance is made simple because the fan
is located in the room: the cover can simply
be lifted o and the propeller can be easily dis-
mounted thanks to its patented xing system.
On the Premium version, the removable electri-
cal part aids motor replacement with no need to
remove the fan from its support.

Great capacity and low consumption
Thanks to its slim design and silent running, the VAM fan is ideal for installation in
inhabited spaces. With its powerful motor and its well-designed airow ductwork,
the VAM can be connected to up to six extract units in the same dwelling. Its
airow characteristics (constant pressure curve) make it particularly adapted to
the operation of humidity sensitive extract units.
Silent: only 29 dB (A)* thanks to strong soundproong and control on the motor.
Constant pressure: essential for demand controlled extract units. 3 settings at
the installation: 80, 100 and 120 Pa.
Low energy consumption: only 23W*, obtained by the adaptation of the
power (electronic control).
Easy to install: easy to handle and can be directly installed in inhabited
space (wall cupboard, corridor, etc.).
Intelligent motor (1)
The VAM is driven by an asynchronous single-phase motor in which
the number of revolutions is maintained at a constant rate thanks to a
tachometer and an electronic board, whatever the airow required by
the extract units**. The power is adapted and optimised to limit noise
and energy consumption.
Installation in close proximity to the occupant
The silence and the compactness of the VAM make it easy to install
directly in the inhabited space of the dwelling, in a wall cupboard,
a loft space, etc. Maintenance is facilitated by its location within the
dwelling.

Ideal for installation in attics
The VPH
2
fan is specially designed for
installation in the attics of individual
house attics, and can be suspended
from a ridge beam by a xing cord.
It is adapted to demand controlled ter-
minals thanks to its constant pressure,
and is able to lead o to 6 extract units.
With its average consumption of 15 W in
microwatt version, the VPH
2
fan really is
an economical and ecient solution.
Low energy consumption: 15 W in micro-
watt version.
Constant pressure: special feature for de-
mand controlled extract units.
Easy installation: can be xed to a ridge
beam in house attics (preassembled cord) or
on walls/ceiling.
Easy maintenance: with compressed air
(available as accessory).
Patented system for a fast and tight
duct connecting (1)
Very easy to install, the furnished con-
nectors assure a tight and solid instal-
lation of the insulated sleeves in one
move.
Sliding door for electrical connection
(2)
The VPH
2
fan is equipped with a sliding
lid, with two possible cable inputs for
ICT 16 mm and 20 mm sleeves and
with a fast-connector plug for easy
and no-tool connecting.
Easy maintenance by compressed
air (3)
Introducing compressed air into the
hole designed for the purpose may
easily clean the motor wheel of the
VPH
2
fan.

A wide choice of fans for apartments
The four proposed fans meet the needs of numerous types of buildings from one storey up to
10 storeys. With their robust and reliable design, and airow characteristics they are particularly
adapted to operation of the humidity sensitive extract units.
- Fire classication C4 (400 C - 30 mn).
- Padlockable proximity switch in series.
Constant pressure: special for demand controlled extract units.
Easy to install: installation in/on roof or basement.
Easy to maintain: using a removable trap door.
A simple adjustment to adapt it to the network on installation
An adjustment by pulley made by the installer makes it possible to dene the airow/pressure
curve according to the ductwork characteristics.
Proximity switch
An external switch facilitates the fan start-up and shutdown. A lock can easily protect it.

Optimising passive stack
ventilation performances
The VBP is easily installed in
the outlet of passive stack
ventilation ducts. Thanks to
an astute adaptation box, the
VBP very low-pressure fan can
maintain satisfactory airow all
year long in a basic installation
using passive stack ventilation.
Combining eciency and
energy saving, it avoids reverse
airow particularly in mid-
season and summer when the
risks are more likely. Its airow
performances make it possible to
equip apartments up to 7 levels
using existing ducts as it works on
low pressure.
Low energy consumption: ecient
motor and electronic control.
Allows an operation in passive
stack ventilation when stopped (no
pressure losses).
Silent: only 46 dB (A)* thanks to its low
speed working.
* Lw @ 8 V, r = 4 m.
Easy to install: by the mean of adaptable
parts.
Controllable by temperature or wind
speed.
Unique patent for operation in passive stack
ventilation (1)
The singular design of the VBP means it will not
create any additional pressure loss when stopped:
its central blades are parallel to the airow and
static paddles located outside the vertical airow
generate the pressure under operation. This
allows normal operation of the passive stack
ventilation when the fan is o.
Electronic control per stack of dwellings (2)
In VBPms version (management system),
the assistance fan is managed per stack of
dwellings: A box controls the simultaneity
of the operation and the power of several
connected fans. The device also controls fan
speeds according to the outside temperature
or wind speed (dierent versions).
Thermal protection against extreme cold
(3)
Available as an accessory, thermal insulation
made of polystyrene protects the VBP motor
from freezing in very cold climates.
Protection for rainy regions with high
rainfall (4)
Available in specied versions or as an
accessory (ref. VBP335), this kit can be
installed on the VBP fan to protect from
rain inltration in very rainy regions.

Important: The aeraulic performances below are measured according to EN 13141-5. They assess the fan alone, without taking into account the pressure losses of
the adaptation part on the duct. The available pressure at the grilles can be much lower depending on the adaptation part used; so it is necessary to know the pres-
sure losses of the ductwork in general and of the adaptation part in particular.
To guarantee satisfactory working of the system when the pressure losses of the adaptation part are unknown we advise to considering a capacity for the
[VBP+adaptation part] system of around 315 m

/h @ 10 Pa @ 12V, corresponding to an airow of 7 grilles (each grille = 45 m

Passive stack ventilation with individual ducts in a collective
building:
Passive stack ventilation with individual ducts in a collective building:
All connections have to be carried out using adhesive tape (c) or speed
clamps. Rigid ducts have to be xed to the structure of the building by
means of brackets.
1 Fix the sleeve (d) in the wall.
2 Fix the extract grille (e) on its sleeve (d).
2 types of extract grille connections are possible:
- spigot to be directly encased in the sleeve
- without spigot to be xed to the wall with the duct or the sleeve.
3 Install the vertical rigid ducts (a) in the space dedicated for this
purpose. Vertical ducts have to be provided at the top with an
adapted outlet, which allows for reaching the required airow. Each
duct serves a oor.
4 Connect a rigid 90 bend (b) to the base of each vertical duct,
at each oor.
5 Realise the connection sleeve-bend using adhesive tape (c).
Repeat stages 1 and 2 for each extract grille.

Air inlets on window
1 Drill a slot in the highest part of the joinery to the dimensions
specied in the product cards.
2 Fix the back-plate using 2 screws (some air inlets are directly xed,
without any backplate).
3 Clip the air inlet on its back-plate.
4 Fix the canopy on the window (outdoor side) using 2 screws.
The installation of air inlets type EHT has to be made through the wall.
Fitting notices are delivered with products.
MEV (Mechanical Extraction Ventilation) extraction ductwork
Example for a whole house fan
1 Position the fan (a) at the adapted place.
2 Fix the exhaust terminal (i) to the exhaust duct connected to the fan
(a).
3 Fix the trident sleeve (g) in the wall.
4 Connect a short length of exible duct (d) to the sleeve (g).
5 Fix the extract unit (h) on its sleeve (g). 2 types of connection
are possible:
- spigot to be directly encased in the sleeve
- without spigot to be xed to the wall with the duct or the sleeve.
6 Connect the sleeve (b) to the fan (a).
7 Connect the exible shaft (d) to the sleeve (b). This type of duct
avoids the propagation of the vibrations of the fan and facilitates
the implementation.
8 Carry-out the connection sleeve-duct using the adhesive tape (c).
9 Connect the rigid duct network including right connections (e) and
bends (f ) to the exible ducting (d) located at each end. Repeat the
stages 3 and 9 for the other extract units.
All the connections have to be carried out using the adhesive tape (c)
or speed clamps.
Rigid ducts have to be xed to the building by means
of brackets (k).
Ducts with rectangular or oblong section are also usable.
