Florida Keys

Marine Sanctuary
Introduction
The Florida keys are
located at the tip of
Florida. It is an
archipelago made up of
1,700 islands.
It is a coral reef. A coral
reef is a ridge of rock
with corals formed on it.
They contain many
forms of wildlife.

Biome
The latitude of the Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary is
24.68 degrees north and 81.24 degrees west.
There are mainly coral reefs at the sanctuary.

Biome
Coral reefs need to be in clear, warm water in order to
survive, so thats why its mostly found near the
Equator.
Has been called Rainforest of the Ocean.

Abiotic
Wet Season
During the wet season [May -
October] the average
temperature is 80 degrees In the
wet season the average of rain is
14cm
Dry Season
The dry season is through
[November-April] with only 2
inches of rain and a temperature
of 68 to 75 degrees .F The
sunlight goes down 80 meters

The graph above shows the hours of daylight. However, it seems as if the
changes arent drastic enough to cause a change in seasons. Its mostly
summer, or very warm (its also near the Equator).
Temperature and Precipitation
This chart shows the air temperature in
each month in the Florida Keys Marine
Sanctuary .

Biotic
Major Organisms Plants
-Coral Reefs
These are created by the buildup of coral polyp, which
are tiny, soft sea anemone .
There are four different areas of corals:

Hard Bottom Area
Hard Bottom
dominated by soft
coral like sea fans

Patch Reef
Patch Reef - a tall
mound of coral, with
big coral like brain
coral as the
dominating feature
Lots of organisms

Shallow Offshore Reef
Shallow offshore
reef usually barrier
reefs, usually
dominated by stag
horn and elk horn
corals (branching
coral)
Deep Offshore Reef
Deep offshore
reef - bottom
dwelling animals
live there, as well
as a big coral as a
central feature

Biotic (Animals)-Barracuda
Barracuda a meat
eating fish whose flesh
should not be eaten by
humans and who is
sometimes known to
attack swimmers. Its
scales color and tendency
to stay still make it hard
to spot underwater

Biotic (Animals)-Moray Eel
Moray Eel a meat
eating animal whose flesh
should not be eaten by
humans. Its hunted by
barracudas and groupers.
It can grow up to 1.5
meters long

Issues
An issue in the Florida
Keys is that people are
killing coral reefs by
overfishing, spreading
disease, careless
recreational use, and
because of warm water.
Another issue is coral
bleaching happening.
The water is getting
warmer because of
global warming, which
people are causing by
polluting the air.
Standing on coral kills the reef
because the coral is so delicate.
Solutions
One solution to
overfishing is that there
should be zones where
people can and cant fish.
A solution to coral reefs
getting killed by humans
is making a rule that says
people cant swim in
places where the coral
reefs are getting killed.
