Some days back, an acquaintance of mine casually asked: Whats your
favourite theme? Upon hearing it, I was honestly stumped. As I searched
through my mind for an obvious answer, I realised I had none despite being in
the interior scene for almost six years. That, for me, was a moment of epiphany.
With local homeowners becoming more accepting of unconventional and
outrageous themes, there are honestly, many interesting styles emerging in
the homes on our sunny shores. Many people are fnding their own identities
through their homes and that could be the reason why I cant just pinpoint a
really specifc theme to love.
If you are, like me, unsure of what theme, out of so many glorious styles, is your
favourite, might we offer you some clarity in this months issue. April is all about
themes, if youve guessed by now, and weve collated a wonderful spread of
styles (Bare Basics, page 19) for you to steal. We have also segregated it by
country (Look, page 36) so you can draw inspiration from either picturesque
Greece or romantic Paris.
It is also our Colour special so get some foolproof tips (Month by Month,
page 14) on how to really dress up your space with colour. Or if you believe
in Fengshui, Fengshui master Kenny Hoo has dished out his top tips for
auspicious colours for 2014 (Expert Advice, page 50).
So, get going and well see you again next month!

Dream Interiors has welcomed two prestigious Italian furniture labels,
Living Divani and Porro, into their brood. World-renowned Italian architect
and designer Piero Lissoni leads the creative development of both brands.
The upscale designs from Living Divani are characterised by sophisticated

birthplace of Italian furniture in 1925, Porro has since evolved from producing
old-style pieces to contemporary collections revolving around relaxed living.
The brand exhibits simple and uncluttered styling that is big on monochrome
palettes and symmetry.

As Duluxs Colour of the Year 2014, a lot can be
said about teal. This deep blue-green tinge is
reinvigorating, therapeutic, inviting and is said
to help open up communication and clarity of
thought. Being such an all-encompassing colour,
it is little wonder it can embrace different types
of themes too. Take for instance, it can effortlessly
accommodate the resort look, nostalgic and mid
century modern styles in this living-dining space.

Black might seem like the
antithesis to this entire
article about adding
colours to your home but
it is also the most versatile
colour to clarify the existing
colours in your home.
For example, you can
use black cushions as an
accent against your white/
neutral coloured seatings
or use a black photo frame
to highlight your images.

LED lights have an edge over traditional
fuorescents and bulbs for their energy
saving and low maintenance benefts. They
also have more colour versatility as well.
Try incorporating one into your headboard or
on top of it as a light-changing and mood-
altering cove light.
The bed is usually where most of us end up
making disastrous choices of crazy patterns
and awkward colour hues. Some experts
swear by the 80-20 rule while others abide
by the 60-30-10 rule. The trick really, for
us colour noobs, is to reduce the number
of colours used e.g. sheets in light colours,
pillows in bright accent colours.

Theres a new kid on the
block in the fooring industry and
its getting as popular as laminate
and vinyl. Meet HERF
H
ERF, short for High End Resilient Flooring,
is fast gaining popularity among local
homeowners. It is said to be an affordable
fooring option that promises comfort, durability, and
easy maintenance, even in high-traffc areas. Some
homeowners are even using it in wet zones like the
kitchen and bathroom. We fnd out more about this
fooring type and how it compares to the rest.
What is
High End
Resilient
Flooring
(HERF)?
High End Resilient Flooring is a
type of synthetic fooring in the
Resilient Flooring family, which
includes linoleum and vinyl.
Resilient fooring is constructed
with material that has some
elasticity, giving the fooring a
degree of fexibility called resilience.

Maintenance
The level of maintenance that HERF
supposedly requires is quite low.
Regular sweeping or vacuuming
is suffcient to keep the foor clean
and looking good.
As HERF is waterproof, theres
no need to worry about the rain
coming in and wetting your foors
when you forget to close the
windows. Nevertheless, HERF is
still considered indoor fooring and
should not be installed outdoors.
Prolonged exposure to the sun
may cause it to experience colour
tonality changes.
In addition, it has a ceramic-
beaded wear layer which gives
its surface a high resistance to
scratches; especially from pets or
when you move furniture pieces
around the room.
Comfort & safety
Like other resilient fooring types,
HERF is comfortable to walk
on and provides good impact
resistance. In the events of falls,
the impact is cushioned by the
resilience of the fooring and the
injury could likely be reduced.
HERF is also certifed to have
a high level of slip resistance,
making it a suitable fooring option
for young children and the elderly.
It is said to be not slippery even
when its wet, a feature that is
drawing many homeowners to use
this in the kitchen since its also
waterproof!
Due to its material composition,
HERF is odourless and passes
health standards tests by being
low in VOC (volatile organic
compounds) emission.

Design & appearance
As of now, HERF can emulate the look of
wood, marble, granite and pebbles. The
wood design of HERF imitates the grains
and colour of actual wood very closely,
with beveled edges and an embossed
surface to create the wood-like feel and
appearance.
However this is a relatively new product
in Singapore, the range of designs that
homeowners can choose from is rather
limited. It pales in contrast especially
when compared to laminate fooring
designs which can vary from thousands of
patterns and colours.
Lifespan
HERF is believed to be reusable. Due
to the installation method, homeowners
can actually dismantle the fooring and
then bring it along with them when they
move to a new home. This would mean
that you wouldnt need to spend money
on new fooring again when you upgrade
to another place. Reusing your fooring
also allows you to do your bit for the
environment.
For residential usage of HERF,
homeowners are given a lifetime warranty
of 20 to 30 years depending on the
individual product.
Installation
Using a direct overlay
system, HERF is installed
with an interlocking
mechanism without any
glue or underlay.

For the HERF that Evorich carries, it
has to have at least a R9 Standard of
slip resistance, uses a click locking
system instead of adhesives or glue for
installation, passes tests for low levels
of formaldehyde emission and other
certifcations.
The three important ones that consumers
can use easily to recognise a HERF
product is frstly, the thickness of the
fooring board. It needs to be at least
5mm thick. Secondly, the product should
be odourless. To be sure, check for
certifcation of low VOC emission. Thirdly,
look out for its slip-resistance properties.
Wood Look
Many local households love the look of
wood at home but rather than install
actual wooden fooring or parquet, they
prefer to have a fooring type that is easier
to upkeep. As such, laminate and vinyl

System type
There are generally two types of air conditioning system:
window air conditioner and the split system.
Window air conditioner
Technically called a unitary air conditioning system, it
consists of a self-contained air conditioning unit that is
placed in a window or through a hole in an exterior wall. This
is an affordable option for homes that need air conditioning
only in one room.
Split system
The split system breaks the air conditioning system into two
packages the indoor unit and the outdoor compressor,
with refrigerant tubing passing through the wall to connect
the both. Some models come with multiple indoor units that
will use one single compressor; this is known as the multi-
split air conditioning system.
The split system is favoured by many homeowners as
the installation of the air conditioner is not restricted to
the exterior walls. It also allows them to place the outdoor
compressor at a more convenient area.
Inverter air conditioners are usually
considered more energy-effcient than
their non-inverter counterparts. This
is because they are able to operate
at partial load, which is a common
scenario in a typical household where
not all the indoor units are switched on
at the same time. In such cases, inverter
AC units can help you to save on your
electrical bills. However, it will not make
much difference at full load, when all the
units are switched on for the whole day.

tips:
Read the instructions on the
can before spray painting. This
will provide you with valuable
information such as how far to
hold the spray can from the object,
how long to shake the can before
spraying, and safety precautions.
Ensure that you are
working in a well-
ventilated area. Do your
spray painting outdoors
whenever possible. If
youre indoors, open all
the doors and windows.
Clean the surface of the
object to remove dust and
dirt. This will provide an
even surface for the paint
to stick to. Also, be sure
the surface is dry before
beginning to paint.

with calamities, injuries and accidents at the North-
western side of your home or offce. Do not place

red, yellow and brown to trigger negative energies.
Instead, paint it blue or white to ward off ill effects.
South
With the Wealth Star

East
Painting your wall with

North
Paint a feature wall here in

here are many perks of being a

ones when renovating is being able
to fashion your home in any style you

person that the designers had to cater for
was the homeowner and her two precious

so that it would fow better and suit the

the original foor plan was left untouched.
The kitchen and dining room were

Not wanting to stop the design process

ith its clean lines, woody fnishes and open-concept layout,
this family home extends a warm welcome at frst sight. It is
Scandinavian yet modern. Its this look that the homeowners
wanted and their commissioned designers from interior design
studio, Story of Us, nailed it.
The brief was clear: An understated Scandinavian style. Besides
specifying this to the Story of Us design team, the married couple
also requested for more storage and an open concept layout. This
is evident in their brand new spectacular semi open-plan bathroom
which overlooks the master bedroom.
In the public zones, more storage space is created in the dining,
living and dry kitchen. In fact, the lofty storage units are design
features themselves which ground the overall modern Scandinavian
look. Taking precedence in the dining area is the bookshelf-display
unit. As the couple and their two young daughters have amassed
many books and knick-knacks, this eye-catching storage and
design fxture is just the solution to showcase their collections.
Elevating its functionality is a sliding panel in wood grain laminate
affxed in the middle of the storage fxture, which can be pushed to
either side for access to the closed storage compartment.

Another smart storage and design

unit in the living space. Hidden and
closed shelving compartments offer
ample storage space for entertainment
peripherals while louvered sliding panels at
the bottom house the home entertainment
devices. In the middle of it all, a recessed
area helms the fat screen TV.
To make up for the lack of a
storeroom, the designers from Story of Us
also had to turn to ingenious ways to store
bulkier items, like say the homeowners
bicycles. The original idea was to install a
metal bike storage pole, but the designers
felt that it would not be in line with the
overall design theme. Instead, they
proposed wall-mounted bike shelves
which are a contemporary alternative to
the industrial-looking pole. Finished in
the same laminate as the other carpentry
works, these bike shelves form part of
the dcor in the living room and provides
a space to hold the helmets too.
Originally part of the wet kitchen, the
dry kitchen with the bar counter was
created by taking down the walls that
enclosed it. Besides being an ideal space
for entertaining, the dry kitchen provides
a space for the missus to do baking with
her two little girls. To facilitate this, the
design team installed the oven out here

Dont be afraid of painting one wall in a dark colour. It
provides contrast among all the other light-coloured walls
and can turn into a design statement.
Using the same laminate pattern for different carpentry

design consistency.
Renovating a home does not mean having to hack

The entrance to the wet kitchen is
moved a short distance back, and a swing
door with a vertical light slot is added. This
keeps cooking fumes contained within the
cooking quarters while allowing light to
fow through.
The warm and relaxed atmosphere is
continued on in the bedrooms. With an
open-concept bathroom that the couple
requested for, the master bedroom
becomes a spacious and airy cocoon.
The bathroom walls were hacked away
and replaced with clear glass panels. The
designers installed roller blinds which
can be used whenever needed. Since
the width of the bathroom allows room
for a lengthy vanity counter, the couple
was also given the luxury of double vanity
sinks with plenty of countertop space.
A wall-mounted mirror spans the entire
wall above the sinks, visually enlarging
the space. The combination of these and
the simple wooden furnishings make
the master bedroom truly a hotel-worthy
retreat for its lucky occupants.

Got a structural xture
that cannot be demolished?
You dont have to blend it into
the space. Instead, turn it
into a focal point like these
folks with their chalkboard

If you are planning to create
a customised storage unit,
play with covered and open

The pillar was challenging because it was
important to get the mix of cement and water

in the homeowners during the process so that
they could tell us exactly how they wanted
the wall to look like, Christopher recalls. It
was a collaborative process that proved to be
satisfying for the homeowners and designer.
With various textures introduced, built-in
carpentry units were all clad with the same
laminate to unify the look. There are also
interesting additions that would appeal to
those who love details. For example, the

One of the things the team did was to
open up the kitchen area. The walls confning
the kitchen were duly removed. With that, the
visual fow becomes uninterrupted, from the
patio, through the living and dining areas, to
the kitchen.
A pillar that cannot be demolished,
however, has been left intact. While most
people would try to blend it into the interior
design, the couple wanted it turned into a
focal point. As it turned out, however, it took
a lengthy process of trial and error to get this
right. First painted entirely in black, it was later

sophisticated yet versatile design lines.
The couple who calls this place home
often entertains large groups of people, so the
immediate need to have a spacious, conducive
area to host friends was of utmost importance.
In order to cater to this vital lifestyle need and
maximise space in the home, Interior Architect
Stephen Goh suggested breaking down the
boundary walls between the guest room and the
living/ dining area. This would open up the area
perfectly but the need for a guestroom was also
part of the plan. As such, he created an ingenious
sliding door screen that could easily be moved into
place when the room was required by guests. The
sliding door can also be slid out of the way in order
to enlarge the dining/ living room, whenever more
space is required. Double happiness all around!
Since the couple are big fans of natural
materials, Stephen crafted out a dining area with an
L-shaped feature wall in oak wood strips to create a
naturally warm environment. The oak wood feature
wall with a sneaky mirrored element was specifcally
stained to match the custom designed laminate
dining bench that boasts hidden storage and a
removable seat as well. This is matched with a

newly expanded bath suite has enough room for a Jacuzzi
as well as a standing shower stall.
LIVING (bottom right) A divider and TV feature wall is
the perfect solution to combat the previous limitation of
space. Aric proposed this specic position after much
contemplation. This facilitates the smooth ow of space
and brings a bigger seating area for the family.
Fancy elements were out of the
question since the homeowners wanted
something that could serve them for a
long time to come. Thats why it was
important to conceptualise a spacious
yet timeless-looking family space.

Pushing the envelope of lighting possibilities further is the
new Designer Luminaire collection from Modulux. It offers
different application uses for your living space with its curved
and pyramid designs. Both can be mounted as a wall light
for general usage or to pump up the aesthetics of your room
as decorative accent lighting. Besides choosing from two
equally attractive designs, it comes in two shades: A white
frame with white netting or a white frame with black netting.

Since Modulux understands cleaning can be a chore, it has
introduced a washable feature for this collection. Just remove
the two overlapping elastic fabrics from the steel powder-
coating structure for a more effortless and thorough clean.

The lighting specialist is also addressing the specifcations of
how different spaces require different lighting. For that, it has
launched the MODULEDS T5 LED light fttings. It is available
in four different lengths 1 foot (4W), 2 feet (8W), 3 feet(12W)
and 4 feet (16W) to suit all kinds of living spaces.

Besides that, the MODULEDS T5 LED lighting series is the
obvious choice over the traditional T5 fuorescent lighting.
Counting lower power usage, longer lifespan and a much
more eco-friendly option, these are its top reasons for
surpassing T5 fuorescent lighting. Furthermore, its frosted
acrylic diffuser does not cast any harsh shadows when
the LED fxtures are linked back-to-back together, unlike
fuorescent lighting.

Best of all, the sleek and slim T5 LED lighting offers a world
of possibilities in terms of application. It can be installed
within the false ceiling to project warmth into a room with its
soft glow. Or tuck it underneath overhead kitchen counters
to introduce more illumination. You can also consider having
it as indirect lighting for mirrors, shelves and bookcases.
Whatever it is, you will be amazed by its incredible versatility.

earning a minimum monthly salary of S$2,000.
3. How much can I get for my renovation loan?
As a homeowner, you can get a
maximum loan of S$30,000 or up
to six times of your monthly salary
(whichever is lower), repayable
in fve years. Additionally, RHB
Renovation Loan customers enjoy
complimentary group insurance
coverage which covers the main
borrower against accidental death
and total permanent disability
during the loan repayment period.
Today, we see an increasing trend of homeowners who meet
the eligibility criteria to apply for renovation loans individually
thus enabling them to have a bigger budget for the home
renovations and furnishings, depending on the scope of work
and furnishing items required.

4. How much can I get for my furnishing loan?
Exclusively for RHB Renovation Loan customers, you can get
an additional furnishing loan ranging from one to four times of
your monthly income, depending on your annual income and
your required loan amount.

5. What documents do I need to prepare before applying
for a renovation loan?
Before applying, you will need to download the RHB
Renovation Loan application form from www.rhbbank.com.sg
Then, prepare the following documents:
a) your HDB fat information or the CPF property withdrawal
statement for proof of property ownership,
b) your latest original payslip or last twelve months CPF
contribution history for proof of income,
c) your contractors quotation,
d) a copy of your NRIC and a cut-out coupon of
SquareRooms readers fat rate of 2.88% p.a. to enjoy the
special offer.
Please email or visit any RHB Bank branch for applications.
We will contact you once your applications have been
approved, usually within fve working days upon receipt of
your application.
6. What is the diference between taking a shorter loan
period and a longer loan period?
The difference is in the monthly repayment amount. Also,
you need to consider whether you are comfortable to
service the loan based on your existing monthly income
and commitments. Please refer to the estimated monthly
repayment table below.
1
Minimum annual income of S$24,000 per borrower is
required. The RHB Renovation Loan will be capped up to
six times of the borrowers monthly income as indicated
in the income documents, subject to a maximum of
S$30,000 per borrower.
2
For RHB Furnishing Loan: For annual income of
S$20,000 to S$29,999, loan amount will be up to two
times of the borrowers monthly income. For annual
income of S$30,000 to S$119,999, loan amount will be
up to four times of the borrowers monthly income. For
annual income of S$120,000 and above, loan amount will
be up to six times of the borrowers monthly income.
3
The calculation is for illustrative purposes only. The
fgures (round off to the nearest dollar) are computed
based on the interest rates quoted and are subject to
change when the interest rates change.
4
Effective interest rate is inclusive of 1% processing fee.

online home shopping portal X-Change
shop savvy
The number of online home shopping portals has
been skyrocketing throughout the years, and for
pretty good reason. For one, it ticks the boxes in
convenience and variety. Sky Creation is one of the
game players. Striving to modernise the interior
design market with web infuences, the dynamic
enterprise decide to kick the business up a notch by
launching a comprehensive online portal, X-Change
at xchange.skycreation.com.sg
This virtual world houses the ultimate in selections of
home-related products, including bathroom fttings,
designer lightings, kitchenware and curtains. As far
as such items are concerned, they are usually bulky
and weigh a ton, which can be quite a hassle to
lug home from the shop front. With X-Change, this
means you can shop and trade to your hearts desire
at the comfort of your own home, and get them
delivered thereafter. Having to wait in line clearly isnt
an issue as well. With just a few mouse clicks, you
can easily navigate between categories and view
the product descriptions at a glance. The best part
about everything is that you can add your desired
products into your cart beforehand, research for
reviews and then make the fnal purchase decision.
Besides, where else can you shop in
your sleepwear?
Apart from the default platform, there is also an
E-Market option for you to fnd all the best deals.
In this section, the product prices are slashed
lower than usual. Due to the fact that there are also
no added retail costs, it allows you to get the full
wholesale pricing integrity.
