SUB: ENGLISH CHAPTER: Parts of Speech & Sentence
1. There are 8 parts of speech: Noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjective, prepositions, conjunctions,
interjections.
a. Nouns: Name of a place, person, animal or thing. Example: Taj Mahal, Bangalore, Meeta,
etc.
b. Pronoun: To avoid repetition of nouns, we replace them with pronouns. Example: He, she,
it, you, me, etc.
c. Verb: A word which denotes action. Example: Running, swimming, playing, etc.
d. Adverb: A word used to describe a verb is known as an adverb. Example: Quickly, slowly, etc.
Determiners are also a part of adverbs which help us to identify the quantity or number.
Example: Each, every, single, etc.
e. Adjective: Describing words are known as adjectives. Example: Red, blue, beautiful, etc.
f. Prepositions: Words which tell us about the position of any particular thing. Example: under,
below, with, to, at, in, into, etc.
g. Interjections: Words which show extreme emotions and feelings. Example: Hurray, Yippee,
alas, wow, etc.
2. A sentence is a group of words which make complete sense.
3. There are 4 kinds of sentences. They are:
Declarative/Assertive: This kind of a sentence is used to tell us about a particular thing.
Example: He is playing cricket.
Interrogative: This kind of a sentence is used to ask a question and it ends with a question
mark. Example: Where are you going?
Exclamatory: This kind of a sentence is used to show emotions and feelings and it ends with
an exclamation mark. Example: What a beautiful day!
Imperative: This kind of a sentence is used to give commands or requests and ends with a
full stop. Example: Open the door.
4. Paragraphs are used to express ones views in a short and crisp way. It is used in various writing
techniques like essays, letters, reports, diary entry, etc.

The period before the birth of Christ is known as BC or before Christ. The
period after that is known as AD or Anno Domini.
A decade is a period of ten years, while a century is a span of 100 years, and a
millennium refers to a period of 1000 years.
The geography of a land often has a powerful impact on its history.
The main source of information for prehistory is archaeology.
History is large studied from written sources, such as manuscripts, inscriptions,
coins and seals.
