REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE!

Waste products are one of the biggest problems of the world
today. It causes pollution that affects millions of people around
the world. Protecting our environment is also saving our lives.
Practicing the three Rs--- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are three
great ways to eliminate one of the largest contributor of land, air, and water
pollution--- our wastes.

What is Waste?

Waste, also known as garbage, are the materials that
are discarded as no longer useful. These wastes
pollutes, consumes resources and will always be
there as long as there are people; making it a big
problem to all.

However, dumping, burning and burying of wastes has also effects in the
environment. People think of these ways as effective and convenient way to get rid of
waste materials. But incinerating wastes causes air pollution, and landfills can cause
leakage of poisonous chemicals and gases that contaminate the soil and ground water,
and also contribute to the global warming.

The most effective and safest way to stop and avoid problems with these
wastes was made simple by following the 3Rs--- Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Recycle, Reuse, Reduce

The 3 Rs. Simple guidelines to help our
environment and ourselves. Recycle means the
renewing of materials. Reuse is the immediate
renewal of such materials. And reduce is resisting to
buy more than what you need.

REDUCE!
Avoiding to make wastes will lessen the task of disposing or recycling them later. Changing
ones habits is a key. Reducing pertains to using only what you need. Reduce the use of electricity by
using enough illumination to work but only enough. Reduce the use of water by turning of the faucet
when not in use. Reduce the use of plastic cups by using glass wares. There's a ton of ways for you to

reduce waste, save yourself some time and money, and
be good to the Earth at the same time. Waste reduction
helps create less waste in the first place. It is the best
of the four Rsbecause preventing waste in the first
place means you have less waste to worry about in
the end. Leave less behind for the futurereduce
waste!

REUSE!
Reusing means using something again after it has been used. It is mostly associated
with plastics and metal cans. Plastics can be reused over and over again due to their
durability, while metal cans can be used as toys and as storage for utensils. Clothes are
reused as rugs, boxes for kids to play, or storage. There has been a boat made up mostly of
plastic bottles.

RECYCLE!
Recycling is the process of collecting and processing thrown away materials and
turning them into new products. It is beneficial to the community as well as the environment.

Benefits of Recycling
Reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators;
Conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals;

Prevents pollution by reducing the need to collect new raw materials;
Saves energy;
Reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change;
Helps sustain the environment for future generations;
Helps create new well-paying jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries
Recycling involves
many steps. Recycling metal
is simply heating the
separated alloys up and
cooling them to reusable
shapes. Though simple, this
process takes a lot of energy
since metal has a very high
melting temperature. Paper
takes much more steps.
Paper is separated by type
and quality, and then it is
purged of glue, ink, plastic,
and staples. The paper is
then mixed with water to make slurry. It is further purged of contaminants and then
undergoes deinking. It is then washed with water, bleached, and viola, it is paper, ready to be
used again. Plastic is recycled by heat compression. Plastic is melted and placed in drums
that rotate and then cooled.

Recycling biodegradable materials are practiced today. One method is just burying
them on the ground and planting spores of fungi, which recycle the materials back into the
ecosystem. Another method utilizes worms. Leftovers are eaten by worms, and the fecal
matter is used as fertilizer. More commonly done is feeding it to pigs.
