Guiding Questions

1. How much energy does an average air-con need to operate?

A hanging- air-conditioners energy should be calculated with the formula P=UI. Kilowatt
Hour= Kilo watt x Operating hours then counting the operating rate which means the difference
between actual operation and the theoretical operations. Usually a hanging air-con is around
700watt, 0.7kilowatt x 1 hour= 0.7 kWh, the operating rate is around 70%, so it is 0.7x70%=0.49
kWh. Which means that 0.49 kWh is needed every hour for one of these air-conditioners,
around 3.5 kWh each day, meaning an 1 kWh solar panel is needed.

2. What amounts of solar panels are needed to compensate for energy needed by one air-
conditioner?

A 0.5 kWh solar panel is needed to compensate for the average 0.49 kWh air-
conditioner. This also requires a country that would provide enough sun, around 4.5 kWh every
day, on average a city that gives 4 kWh for a 1 kWh solar panel system every day. So in any
average city there could be a solar system as long as there is a good place to place the solar
panels where they can get the most form the sun.

3. What is the cost of the solar panels and the air-conditioner

a. An average hanging air-conditioner unit of a better brand would cost around 2500
b. A 8x8 1 kWh solar panel will cost around 11500
Around 14000 per machine, although a bit expensive, but worth the money for making
the world a better place.

4. What are the benefits that a solar powered air-conditioner will provide us?
Solar powered air-conditioners destroys the chances of there will be any carbon
pollution. There will be no waste of energy as this technology is 100% environmentally green.
Although not as stable but there is a guarantee that our air remains un-polluted because no
fossil fuels will be burnt, meaning no incomplete combustion which will lead to letting out a
poisonous gas monoxide.
5. How efficient is this machine in theory?
If sunlight could be reasonable every day, enough to produce 4 kWh, the machine will
not stop as long as there is sunlight. Assuming that the sun is always there during day, the
machine could work the whole time when there is sun. To start this machine will not need to
use any electricity that is not generated by the panels, as this machine accounts the start up rate
into its usage of solar panels, meaning although a bit more solar panels are needed, but in
return it will not depend on another energy source.
6. Are there any previous designs of solar powered air-conditioners?

There has been some modifications of air-conditioners, most of the air-conditioners
either have an inefficient power source, or not enough solar panels, or they do need another
source to turn on the air-conditioner. This design is revolutionary in the way that it only depends
on solar power, nothing else.

7. Where would be more suitable for this product?

Where there is a reasonable amount of sunlight and where there is enough space to
place the 8x8 solar panels. Good places would be villas or apartment that have roof tops or large
walls, also best to be facing the sun, meaning the design should be placed or made in a way that
it can take in the most amount of sun light.

Design brief
The hanging air-conditioner is what I chose to modify, make it more energy efficient. The
ultimate creation will be a hanging air-conditioner that uses solar panels and has those panels attached
to the wall or roof of that structure, assumedly the roof because there is where you get the most sun.
Although air-conditioners are not the main factors of damaging the environment, but saving the energy
that an air-conditioner uses is a start to attacking the whole environmental problem, to solve the
problem little steps needs to be taken, progressing into which will finally solve the problem. I have
chosen to create it with solar panels because I thought this would be the most effective way of
generating energy in a city would be the sun. Wind would be deflected by tall buildings, no water for
hydroelectricity, and other type of energy generation would be too, too costly. The only drawback to
solar panels is the size needed and sun needed for it to power an air-conditioner and let it run non-stop
for around 10 hours each day. What is special about this air-conditioner is because it uses 100% solar
energy, even for its operating process, most of the existing solar energy air-conditioners usually use non-
generated energy to power it on, whereas I have more or less overcame the problem by using a slight
bit more panels than needed.
