our researchers are global experts in their
feld and the latest Research Assessment

groups and projects, including the
internationally renowned Centre for the
Study of Modern Confict, the Scottish
Centre for Diaspora Studies and the Centre
for Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
History
History at Edinburgh is one of the largest
and most distinguished departments
of its kind. In fact, we hold the oldest
established Chair in Scottish History.
As one of the largest of its kind in the UK, the University of
Edinburghs School of History, Classics & Archaeology is one
of the great world centres for the study of the human past.
Our teaching offers a rich diversity of topics,
delivered by a diverse, multinational group
of historians whose interests cross many
periods, regions and specialisms, from
Pictish Scotland and Byzantine Italy through
to contemporary political history. Please

Classics
Classics at Edinburgh continues a tradition
that goes back to the Universitys
foundation in 1583.
Our teaching covers all the major disciplinary
areas in the feld: Greek and Latin literature
and thought; Greek and Roman History;
and Classical art and archaeology. With
a permanent academic staff of around 20,
we are one of the largest and most wide-
ranging departments in the UK. Please
see page 14 for our MSc in Classics.
Archaeology
Archaeology at Edinburgh has a tradition
going back to the 19th century. Many
aspects of that tradition are still visible
in the School today: our archaeological
collections were named to commemorate
the great prehistorian and frst holder of
the Abercromby Chair Vere Gordon Childe;
the annual series of Munro lectures in
archaeology and anthropology were
endowed in 1910 by Dr Robert Munro, a
distinguished medical practitioner who, in
his later life, became a keen archaeologist;
and the recently revived Abercromby Chair
of Prehistoric Archaeology commemorates
Lord Abercromby, author of distinguished
research on Bronze Age pottery.
Edinburghs great tradition in prehistory
continues to this day, with expertise
in Britain, the Mediterranean and the
Near East, but we also have strengths
in Classical and Byzantine archaeology,
in archaeological theory, environmental
archaeology, osteoarchaeology and
forensic anthropology. Please see

Archaeology tools
Archaeology students beneft from
our dedicated teaching and research
facilities, including laboratories for artefact
analysis, environmental archaeology,
osteoarchaeology, bone chemistry and
computing (with a wide range of software
applications). There is an extensive reference
collection of archaeological materials,
such as pottery, metal, stone and glass
artefacts, in the V Gordon Childe teaching
collection. Students can also beneft from
the facilities, archives, collections and
expertise of a range of heritage agencies
and commercial archaeology units based
in the city of Edinburgh.
Collections of the University
The Universitys collections are unique
in their depth and diversity. Managed
by the Centre for Research Collections,
and housed in our Main Library, they span
more than 500,000 rare books, scientifc
and cultural artefacts from around the
world, historically signifcant musical
instrument collections, specialist
museum collections, and manuscripts.
Highlights include the worlds oldest
surviving Gaelic text; a page from the fnal
draft of Charles Darwins On the Origin of
Species, as well as two copies of the frst
edition; Adam Smiths original library;
Alexander Flemings sample of mould
used to make penicillin; original quartos
of Shakespeare plays, with notes in the
margins from 16th-century actors; the
thermometer of chemist Joseph Black;
and original Sir Isaac Newton diagrams
in David Gregory manuscripts of 1692.

an essential component on many of our
programmes. Almost all our students take
compulsory courses designed for skills
acquisition, while optional courses also have
specifc objectives in terms of skills training.
Our programmes give you the opportunity

Masters programmes
History programmes
If you are interested in studying a broad range
of subjects the MSc in History offers courses from
the many periods and regions we teach. The new
online MSc in History is a good option for those
unable to relocate or those who want fexibility
in their study. See pages 9 and 10 respectively.
The subjects we cover can be organised by period: contemporary
history; 18th-century cultures; late antique; Islamic and Byzantine
studies; and Medieval history. Or by region: American history;
modern British and Irish history; and Scottish history. Or by theme
or discipline: diaspora and migration history; gender history;
intellectual history; and social and cultural history.
Some students, particularly experienced historians, will be
interested in our Masters by Research degrees in History,
Scottish History, or Economic and Social History, which allow for
investigation, under supervision, of a specialised topic. See pages
10 and 8 respectively. Masters by Research degrees are examined
either by a long dissertation of 30,000 words, or shorter
supervised pieces and a 15,000-word dissertation.

American History

Programme description
Our breadth of historical expertise means this programme offers an
enviable diversity of both time periods and themes. Whether youre
looking to continue to advanced study, or pursue an interest you
developed as an undergraduate, youll enrich your skills in independent
research and gain an in-depth understanding of the key topics and
historiographical debates of this young nations dynamic past from
the American Revolution to the Cold War.
Youll be part of a vibrant research culture, one that encourages
collaboration and includes regular lectures, seminars, and other events
involving leading American historians. The impressive resources of
both the Universitys Main Library and the National Library of Scotland,
home to one of the UKs largest collections of Americana, will also
be on hand.
Programme structure
Youll take two semesters of seminar-style courses in small groups,
which will include two core courses in generic skills training (one each
semester), and one in American historiography. This latter course
introduces you to the diverse range of themes that the programme as
a whole explores. Added to this will be a further three courses of your
choice, one in the frst semester and two in the second.
In addition, you will apply your independent research skills in developing
your own dissertation, under the supervision of our academic staff. This
is your chance to be creative; our breadth of historical expertise means
were open to almost any feasible area of interest.

Contemporary History

Programme description
Explore the links between history and current affairs, and discover how
the recent past has shaped todays world in this fascinating new masters
degree. As host to one of the largest and most diverse concentrations
of contemporary historians in the UK, with a wide variety of thematic
and geographical specialisations, the School can offer you a unique
opportunity to study the recent past in depth and from multiple
perspectives. Youll be able to choose from an extensive range of
specialist courses and areas for supervised individual research, and also
beneft from training in key methodological, theoretical and practical

Diaspora & Migration History
MSc 1 yr FT (2 yrs PT available for UK/EU students)
Programme description
With a particular focus on British and Irish diasporas, this innovative
programme examines a phenomenon that touches the social fabric
of countless communities across the world and their shared experience
of displacement, alienation, and acceptance. We draw on the unique
diversity of expertise in Scottish, English and Irish migration and diaspora
history, available in the Schools Scottish Centre for Diaspora Studies (the
frst research unit of its kind), while accommodating complementary
interests in African, American and Asian history, also found in the School.
Youll learn how to critically assess a variety of historical sources and
develop a rigorous historical argument. Youll also become familiar with
the current historiographical and methodological debates in the feld
of diaspora and migration history.
Programme structure
Taught through a combination of small-group seminars and tutorials,
one-to-one supervision and private study, the programme presents
you with a range of core and optional modules, along with the chance
to conduct an independent research project in partnership with
experienced academic supervisors who are leaders in their felds.

Eighteenth-Century Cultures
MSc 1 yr FT (2 yrs PT available for UK/EU students)
Programme description
With its place at the heart of the Scottish Enlightenment, Edinburgh is the
ideal location from which to study the cultural life of the 18th century,
particularly the Scottish dimension of the pan-European Enlightenment.
This innovative programme is unique among British graduate programmes
because it offers a combination of academic and feld experience. Not
only will you participate in weekly seminars led by internationally recognised
experts in the feld of 18th-century culture, but you will also take up an
on-site internship at one of the many prestigious archives, museums, estate
houses, gardens, and galleries in or near Edinburgh. Youll develop curatorial,
archival management, conservation, or restoration skills under the guidance
of industry professionals, while expanding your knowledge of the era and
developing your research interests. Guiding you in your interdisciplinary
studies will be a team of scholars and specialists in visual, material, literary,
and social history, including experts based in the Universitys Schools of
History, Divinity and Law, and Edinburgh College of Art. We also collaborate
with archivists and curators from National Museums Scotland, the National
Galleries of Scotland, and other cultural repositories, providing you with
the broadest possible perspective on British, European, and transatlantic
approaches to this period.

Programme description
These two MSc by Research programmes are aimed at students who have
a specifc topic of interest into which they wish to conduct their own
research. When applying, as for other research programmes such as a
PhD, you must submit a research proposal explaining your plans and
demonstrating your knowledge of your chosen feld: this will be closely
scrutinised as part of our admissions process. Two supervisors will be
appointed to work with you on the project: it is a good idea to consult
with prospective supervisors before applying. In History and Scottish
History, we can offer supervision across an exceptionally wide
chronological and geographical range.
Programme structure
You can choose to complete either of these MSc by Research degrees
in two ways:
1. A long dissertation of 30,000 words, accompanied by two compulsory
training courses, Historical Research: Skills and Sources and Historical
Methodology, and further optional courses.
2. A 15,000-word dissertation accompanied by the compulsory training
courses and two directed reading and research courses (the total word
count for all work submitted will be 30,000).
Career opportunities
The concentration on research under supervision makes this degree
suitable for those contemplating doctoral study, whether in our own
School or elsewhere, and many who take this degree follow that route.
But undertaking substantial and independent research and a writing
project is equally excellent preparation for a wide variety of careers.

Programme description
Ideas and patterns of thought always have been, and still continue to
be, subject to historical change. The ways in which they change, and the
reasons why they do so, make for fascinating study. In this comprehensive
programme, youll be introduced to the principal methodologies of
intellectual history and become familiar with some key theoretical areas,
such as Begriffsgeschichte and the Cambridge School. You will also have
the opportunity to explore particular themes in intellectual history,
such as Epicureanism, mind-body dualism in early modern thought, the
Scottish Enlightenment and the intellectual history of the American
Revolution, and develop a detailed understanding of their origins,
historical circumstances and implications. By the end of the programme

With more than 70 members of academic staff attached to our cross-
disciplinary Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS), Edinburgh
is a wonderful environment for medieval scholarship. In this programme,
youll take an in-depth look at the fascinating history of Europe in the
period between 400 and 1500 AD and form your own specialist interest,
providing a foundation for doctoral study should you choose that route.
Through small, seminar-based classes, youll develop knowledge of the
principal categories of surviving evidence and the technical skills needed
to read them, namely palaeography, and linguistic knowledge (generally
Latin), and learn the value of an interdisciplinary approach to medieval
research. World-class resources will be on hand to aid your studies, most
notably the impressive collections of the National Library of Scotland and
the Universitys Main Library, one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

Classics programmes
Our main masters degree is the MSc in Classics,
which offers the full range of courses in the
subject area; you can also take relevant courses
in other areas, including not only history and
archaeology, but also divinity and philosophy,
for example.
The majority of students concentrate most of their courses
in one area, such as Greek and Latin literature, ancient history,
or art and archaeology, but it is also common to choose a
blend of disciplines. Most students take a language, whether
to develop existing knowledge or to learn a new skill: Greek
and Latin can be taken at elementary and intermediate level
and in our specialised text seminars.
Some students, who will tend to be experienced in their feld of
classics, will be interested in our Masters by Research in Classics,
which allows for investigation, under supervision, of a specialised
topic. See page 15. The Masters by Research degree is examined
by a long dissertation of 30,000 words.

Classics

Programme description
MSc by Research programmes last 12 months full time (24 months part time)
and are aimed at students who have a very specifc topic of interest into
which they wish to conduct their own research. When applying, as for other
research programmes such as a PhD, you must submit a research proposal
explaining your plans and demonstrating your knowledge of your chosen
feld: this will be closely scrutinised as part of our admissions process. Two
supervisors will be appointed to work with you on the project: it is a good
idea to consult with prospective supervisors in advance of an application.
We are happy to supervise across the full range of our research interests
in Greek and Latin language, literature and thought; Greek and Roman
history from Classical Greece to Late Antiquity; and Classical Greek and
Roman Art and Archaeology. We are able to supervise in related areas
such as Persian history and Reception studies.
Programme structure
A long dissertation of 30,000 words is the sole form of assessment,
but you will also attend compulsory training courses and are allowed
to audit other relevant courses (especially languages).
Career opportunities
The concentration of the degree on research under supervision makes this
degree suitable for those contemplating doctoral study, here or elsewhere,
and many who take this degree follow that route. But undertaking a
substantial and independent research and writing project is equally
an excellent preparation for a wide variety of careers.

Classical Art & Archaeology

Programme description
By choosing this degree, youll have access to the expertise of our
academics who are all passionate about the Classical period and its art,
social history and archaeology. The programme focuses on the ancient
Greek and Roman worlds from the Iron Age to the Late Roman/Early
Christian period: not just the cities of Athens and Rome but also the
furthest reaches of the Roman Empire. Should your interests lie in a feld
that overlaps a related subject area, youll appreciate our interdisciplinary
approach, which allows you to draw on the experience of staff throughout

Late Antique, Islamic
and Byzantine Studies

Programme description
This new programme takes advantage of Edinburghs remarkably rich
scholarly expertise in the Mediterranean and Near Eastern world in Late
Antiquity (roughly 250850). Although based administratively and listed
here for convenience under classics, the teaching comes from all three
subject areas of the School History, Classics, and Archaeology as well
as from experts from Divinity, History of Art and Islamic Studies. Courses
range from the Latin west to the Islamic near east, from literature through
political, social, and religious history to art and archaeology. Linguistic
training is a vital part of the programme, with courses available in four
relevant languages.
Programme structure
Your core course Approaches to the Long Late Antiquity will provide
you with specialist methodological, theoretical and cross-disciplinary
training. You will also undertake a compulsory language option in one

The Hellenistic World

Programme description
This programme gives you the chance to draw on the international
expertise of our staff community comprising specialists in the felds
of Hellenistic literature, philosophy, history, and art and archaeology.
As acknowledged leaders of this international feld, well immerse you in
the history, culture and archaeology of the period, showing you how to
analyse the wealth of information being uncovered from its diverse and

Forensic Anthropology

Programme description
Intensive and challenging, this programme prepares you for a career in
the rapidly growing area of forensic human bone analysis, identifcation,
and interpretation. Whether recovered from crime scenes, war graves,
or mass disasters, the bones and teeth of a deceased person can provide
such information as age at death, sex, stature, and indications of general
health and lifestyle, all of which can assist in the personal identifcation
of that individual, and provide an insight into the circumstances
surrounding death. Through a multidisciplinary combination of academic
theory and practical application, youll learn to approach osteological
problems creatively and develop the ability to develop and test research,
critically investigate data sources and relate scientifc analyses to forensic
problems. Crucially, you will also study the legal, scientifc and evidential
framework of forensic anthropology, which will aid you in the proper
interpretation of recovered osteological remains.

lectures, seminars and hands-on practical work with archaeological

Human Osteoarchaeology

Programme description
With human bones representing a major portion of archaeological
fnds, its not surprising that we rely on their analysis to further our
understanding of ancient societies. This programme gives you the
skills to work with these archaeological treasures to discover evidence
of population structure, biological affnities, cultural behaviour, and
patterns of disease in prehistoric and historic civilisations. Youll be
part of a steadily growing community, as interest in osteoarchaeology
expands globally and the discipline takes its place as a vital means of
understanding our past. Combining theoretical learning with hands-on
practice, the course provides a grounding in osteoarchaeological
method and theory, which will be essential to your handling of
specimens recovered from archaeological sites.

Mediterranean Archaeology

Programme description
The area surrounding the Mediterranean presents innumerable opportunities
for archaeological research. This programme allows you to explore the rich
history of this region at an advanced level through examination of a wide
range of periods, geographical areas and themes. Youll study with the
support of distinguished academics and make use of a suite of modern
facilities, including new laboratories for practical work, specialist computing
facilities, dedicated study space and extensive reference collections. Through
a series of tailored and fexible courses youll develop an understanding of
specifc regions and periods, current theories, methodologies and major
research issues, all of which will provide the basis of PhD study, or a solid
foundation for future participation in excavation, survey and/or lab work.
Programme structure
Over the course of the programme, you will complete six courses: one
compulsory (Research Sources and Strategies in Archaeology) and fve
chosen from the list below. You may also be given permission to choose
an added course from any of the non-archaeology taught masters
programmes that relate to your study. The programme culminates

Osteoarchaeology

Programme description
Bones can offer intriguing clues about the past, and this masters degree
programme focuses on the vital science of human and animal bone
identifcation and interpretation, giving you the chance to build on your
existing knowledge of archaeological methodology and theory to better
understand the information they can provide. Combining practice and
theory, the programme forms an ideal basis for doctoral study and offers
you a solid foundation in the physical properties and theoretical bases of
human and animal osteoarchaeology. You will learn advanced analytical
and identifcation techniques, discover how to reconstruct individual
traits (such as age and sex) and gain skills in applying scientifc and
cultural/historical methods of interpretation.
Programme structure
The programme is delivered by a blend of lectures, seminars and practical
work. You will take six compulsory courses. Coursework consists of essays,
reports, and practical assessments. You will also complete a dissertation
on a topic of your choice.

Centre for medieval and
Renaissance Studies
Edinburgh is home to one of the largest
communities of Medieval and Renaissance
specialists, with more than 70 members
of staff actively pursuing research in this
feld. Research areas span a vast range of
felds including history, history of art and

music, divinity, archaeology, law, Celtic,

Research options
We offer the following research degrees:
PhD and mPhil
The PhD is our principal research degree.
It is awarded for a substantial single body
of work, which must add to the existing
body of knowledge of your feld of study.
The PhD usually takes around 36 months
full time (72 months part time) to
complete and requires the submission
of a thesis not exceeding 100,000 words.
A shorter and less common alternative is
the MPhil, which takes 24 months full time
(48 months part time) to complete and
requires the submission of a thesis not
exceeding 60,000 words.
PhD and MPhil candidates take a
compulsory oral examination of the thesis,
which is an integral part in determining
whether the requirements for awarding
the degree have been met.

Research environment
We have a long and distinguished tradition of teaching, research and
feldwork in archaeology at Edinburgh, all of which are closely integrated.
We have active research contacts with the National Museums of Scotland,
the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) and the
Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments (RCAHMS).
Archaeology hosts research groups in palaeoeconomy and Cypriot
archaeology, both involving close collaboration with the SUERC. Staff
have internationally recognised expertise in the prehistory of Europe,
the Mediterranean and Near East, as well as in archaeological theory,
environmental archaeology, osteoarchaeology and forensic anthropology.

We host one of the largest economic and social history research
groupings in the UK. Staff research interests are wide-ranging, including
the study of economic development, energy policy, globalisation,

Research environment
Here in the nations capital, Scottish history is taught by a strong and
distinguished team, comprising seven core academic staff members, plus
a number of postdoctoral fellows and associated staff. The subject has
been taught at the University of Edinburgh since the prestigious Sir William
Fraser Chair of Scottish History and Palaeography was established in 1901.
The post is currently held by Professor Ewen Cameron and was, from 2005
to 2011, held by Professor Tom Devine, a regular media commentator
and author of numerous bestselling titles on Scottish history.
From the Picts to the founding of the new Scottish Parliament, we can
offer expertise in all periods of study, from early Medieval times to the
present day. Other members of staff have published extensively on topics
including early Medieval battles, late Medieval kingship, saints cults,
urban history, the Reformation, the witch hunt, government and fnance,
the Highlands in all periods, Scotlands external relations (especially with
America) and its place in the Union.
Scottish History is home to the Scottish Centre for Diaspora Studies, the

What type of degree?
masters degrees
Our taught masters programmes are
designed to deepen knowledge in a
subject you will typically have studied
at undergraduate level, although they
can also offer a new direction in your
academic career.
mSc or mSc by Research
Taught masters programmes last 12
months, consisting of two semesters of
taught courses followed by an individual
supervised research project.
An MSc by Research, which lasts one year,
is based on a research project tailored
to your interests. The project can be a
precursor to an MPhil or PhD, or it can
be a standalone qualifcation.
Online distance learning
We are the biggest provider of online
distance learning in the Russell Group.
Just like our on-campus provision, all our
online masters are delivered by dedicated
academics, many of whom are leaders in
their feld. You can study part time towards
a Postgraduate Certifcate, Postgraduate
Diploma or MSc, and the timescales are
fexible you can complete the MSc in
two years or take up to six years. Online
distance learning is an extremely fexible
option for students looking to balance
further study with professional or family

Research degrees

As a PhD candidate you pursue a research
project under continuous guidance,
