HOW DOES NATURAL DISASTER
AFFECT US?
Natural disaster affects our world in many ways. According to the website:
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/ the definition of Natural Disaster is Natural (as
opposed to man-made) events that kill people or damage poverty or environment There
are many different kinds of Natural disasters, happen occasionally. Ever year around 500
natural disasters affect people in our world, causing 250 million people to feel pain and
suffer from the consequences.
There are many types of disaster such as Tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and Earthquakes.
TSUNAMIS
Tsunamis occur in all parts of the world. A tsunami is an ocean wave or group of waves
cause by a giant movement of the seabed, usually an earthquake or and volcanic eruption.
The tsunami waves travel across the ocean at high speed. When the tsunami reaches land,
the waves increase in size and crash ashore, causing terrible damage. Most tsunami are
barely noticeable in deep parts of the ocean.
An earthquake is a sudden, often violent shaking of
the ground. Tsunamis usually happen when giant
chunks of land at the bottom of the ocean move as
the result of an earthquake or and volcanic eruption
underwater. So it begins when two of the earths
tectonic plates meet. They push up against each
other, which creates a lot of tension (tightness). The
crust is very strong and can withstand a lot of pressure, but after
many years of pushing against one another, the plates cannot
withstand the strain. Suddenly they shift past one another. Wave
length is the length of the tsunami of other disaster. Ocean floor is at the bottom of the
ocean like the Atlantic Ocean where you go to the bottom then they say you are at the
ocean floor. Wave height is when there is a tsunami it is the height of the tsunami, how high
the tsunami is. Run-up is the beach was normally the waves come to shore, to the sand.

In 2004 26
th
December, India ocean tsunami was the most
destructive tsunami ever recorded. It began without warning
early in the morning. At the end of the day, it has hit crowded
beaches right across the Indian Ocean. The tsunami and its
aftermath killed more than 200,000 people. Tsunamis have hit
many different places, but the & most deadliest tsunami hit

was at: Indian Ocean, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Ireland, UK, Messina, Italy, Indonesia,
Tokaido, Japan, Japan and Africa, Chile. In total 548210 was either killed or was badly hurt.
Tsunamis are natural events that have happen throughout the history of the earth. As the
population of the world grows, coastal towns and cities get bigger. This means that each
tsunami may affect more people.

Volcanic Eruption
Volcanic Eruptions occur in all parts of the world. A volcanic is a type of mountain which
spews out lava/ magma because of the earths movement. Most of the time volcanoes are
silent and still, it can also suddenly erupt. Lava may spill out like bubbling treache it may
shoot into the air at high speed. Some volcanoes give off
clouds of ash and gas as well.
Volcanic eruptions occur when cracks in the earth, caused by
moving plates that make up the planets crust, allowing
magma/ lava to emerge through the volcanic vent. Volcanic
eruptions affect its surroundings by spreading lava which can
cause other Disaster to form such as landslide and tsunamis.
In the 79 A.D Mt Vesuvius was one of the worlds best known
volcanic eruption, not caused but its destruction, cause by its
tragic eruption in 79 A.D Mt Vesuvius erupted at the cities of
Pompeii and Herculaneum in Italy. Mt Vesuvius killed more
than 2000 people leaving no survivors and burying the entire
town in more than 15 feet of ash. 2000 years later scientist made the plaster cast.
When a volcano erupts, smoke, lava would come out of
the volcanic, sliding on the volcanoes vent form. The
smoke and lava would explode into the air, which when
it gets closer to people, villages, cities and many more.
They will burn down. People wont be able to breath
because of the ash causing then death. When people
die, they would turn into stone because of the lava and
ash mixed together on the body of the human. A crust
is the earths surface. Magma Chamber is at the bottom
of the volcano where it stores all the magma in the
volcano. Lava is a very hot thing that comes out of the
volcano when it erupts. Slide vent are where all the lava of magma come sliding down the
volcano. A crater is at the top of the volcano when it spews out lava Volcanic eruption

occurs in all parts of the world, they spew out lava/ magma and unbreathable smoke and
ashes.
Earthquakes
Earthquakes occur in all parts of the world. An earthquake is a sudden, often violent shaking
of the ground. What makes this happen? It begins when two of the earths tectonic plates
meet. They push up against one another, which creates a lot
of tension. The three different types of earthquakes are:
tectonic plates, eruption and explosion.
What causes and earthquake? So this is how it works
Tectonic plates fit together like pieces of puzzle. When one
plate pushes against another plate, stress builds up. The stress
cause faults often develop deep underground, layers or the
rock suddenly slips. The movement releases the built up stress
and shake the ground above which is
called and earthquake. A fault line is
the rock or the ground of the surface has the fault were the earthquake has
the crake. An epicentre is the point on the earth's surface vertically
above the focus of an earthquake. A hypocenter is where the nuclear
explosion or earthquake has hit.
In 1960 May 22
nd
, and earthquake has just hit Valdivia, Chile
measuring on the Richter scale 9.5 making it the worlds largest
earthquake in history. It caused US $550 million damage in Chile, The
Earthquake killed more than 1655 people and injured 3000 and
displaced two million. The earthquake was more than 1000km long.
Two days after the initial earthquake, the nearby volcano erupted
(Puyehue) sending ash and steam 6 km into the air atmosphere over
a period of several weeks.
Earthquakes occur in all parts of the world as more population
grows mean more deaths and injuries when it comes to disaster.
Natural disaster is dangerous. That why we should always watch news, to be aware if
anything might happen so we have time to evacuate. Natural disaster can come out of
nowhere with a warning just like the 2004 Thailand tsunami where they had no warning and
the tsunami hit and killed lots of people.
