Editorial Preface
This issue marks a new
phase
in the
development
of the British Journal
of
Ethnomusicology,
with the establishment of a new editorial team and
board,
new
production arrangements
and a redesign of the Journal's
layout.
As
incoming
editors we would like to thank the
outgoing
team for their
outstanding
efforts in
establishing
the Journal, and for
handing
over a
publication
which
already (after
only
6
years
in
existence)
has a considerable
reputation
to maintain.
The Journal will for the next three
years
be edited
by
Suzel Ana
Reily
and
Martin
Clayton,
with Carole
Pegg acting
as Reviews Editor. The
newly
expanded
Editorial Board
includes,
in addition to these
three,
the other
outgoing
editors
(Richard Widdess,
David
Hughes
and John
Baily),
and new members
Stephen Blum,
Richard
Middleton,
Micheal O'Suiilleabhain and Udo Will. The
new Editorial Board's
membership
therefore reflects not
only
the
high
standards of scholarship we intend to maintain and the broad
interpretation
of
the the term
"ethnomusicology",
but also the more international outlook we
would like to establish.
To enhance BJE's international
profile further,
we wish to
encourage
submissions from researchers from across the
globe.
As well as
original pieces
of work, translations of
high quality
articles first
published
in local journals in
languages
other than
English
will also be considered for
publication.
In this
way
we
hope
to create awareness within the
English-speaking
world of the
originality
and
dynamism
of
many
local
ethnomusicological communities,
particularly
those outside the
Anglo-American
axis. We invite our subscribers
to communicate this to
ethnomusicologists
in their research
areas, and to
collaborate in the translation of worthwhile material.
We also wish to inform our
readership
of our
plan
to
move,
in the new
millennium, to
publishing
two issues of the Journal each
year.
In the first
instance one of these issues will be thematic, while the other will remain of
general
interest. The first thematic issue will be entitled "Brazilians on
Brazilian Musics", for which
recognised specialists
are
already preparing
contributions. The themes for other thematic issues will be announced
periodically
in the BFE
Newsletter,
and we also invite our readers to
propose
themes for future issues. We would also like to remind all our readers that BJE
continues to welcome all
high quality
submissions on
ethnomusicological
topics:
indeed,
the health and
vitality
of the Journal is
dependent
above all on
the
quality
and
quantity
of material submitted.
As
incoming
editors we would like to thank the Board for their contributions so
far
(and
those to
come!),
Jane Wood for her work on the
copy-editing
and
page
layout
of the
Journal,
and Pamela
Higgins
for her work on the new
design.
We
would also like to thank the
Open
University,
through
the Research
Development Funding
Sub-Committee and the Arts
Faculty,
for their financial
support
which will be invaluable in
implementing
these new initiatives.
