Gr assr oot s Democr acy:
^ Empowerment of Neighborhood
Assemblies: People meeting face-to-face
are best equipped to make decisions
regardi ng thei r communi ty. Deci si on
making needs to be taken out of the
hands of bureaucrats, developers, and
professional planners. We should end
b a c k r o o m d e a l s ,
^Election of Major Commissions:
End the undemocratic process of major
commissions (Planning, Police, etc.) being
appointed by the City Council. Let the
people decide in ward-by-ward elections

empowered to change their charters with
out an OK from Montpellier.
Ecol ogy and Growth:
^Moratorium on luxury growth:
Burlington has experienced too much
l uxury growth. The
community and the envi
ronment are suffering.
Let the community decide
how it can develop along
ecological and human
i s t i c l i n e s .
Protect Open Spaces:
Burlington needs a
waterfront that is open
and accessible to every
one, not just the rich.
Consequently, we should
r e z o n e t h e e n t i r e wa t e r
front to assure no further for-prot devel
opment. We should also protect the Inter
vale from non-agricultural development,
^Ecological Transportation: Burling
ton is choking with too many automo
b i l e s . Th e a n s we r i s n o t t o b u i l d mo r e
roads, but to support efcient, comforta
ble public transportation. We should
oppose the widening of Main St, and the
building of the Southern Connector.
^Al t ernat i ve Energy: Encourage
efciency and alternative forms of
energy. We should reject power from
Hydr o- Quebec.
Nei ghborhoods and
Housi ng:
^Rent stabilization; Rents have
tripled in Burlington in the last 10
years, forcing low income people out of
Burlington or into homelessness. A

rents by determining whether increas
es are appropriate.
^Expansion of Land Trust: The
Land Trust, which keeps houses out of
the speculative real estate market, is a
valuable program aimed at making

^ Decriminalization
of Drugs: We should
let people make their own decisions
about their private lives. We should
demand that the federal government
end seizures of property immediately.
Support communi ty run programs to

^Support the Bill of Rights: We

political expression. Protect dissent in
times of peace and war.
