In a summer that's poised to
be filled with stories of
superheroes leaping tall
buildings and the like, many
readers are seeking out
summer fare that focuses on
heroes of a different kind. A
new and innovative novel by
author Jane Bow is set to top
summer reading lists with a
story of heroism firmly
grounded in the real-life
experiences of women in WWII Greece.
Cally's Way, Bow's third novel, is a rare breed of contemporary
fiction that delves into the historical realities of life in Nazi-
occupied Crete. Interweaving the story of a young woman, Cally,
who is seeking to demystify her own past, with that of her
grandmother Callisto, Bow unearths some of the Second World
Wars least talked-about heroes: the women of the Cretan
Resistance.
"Greece is one of those exotic vacations we all think about
romantically. And having been fortunate to spend as much time
there as I have, I can attest to the fact that it is a truly magical
place. But as a tourist or a vacationer, there is a great deal of the
past that you simply won't hear about, says the author, who
herself goes to Crete every year.
While writing Callys Way, Bow found she was able to craft precisely
the kind of work she likes to pack in her suitcase for summer
travelling:
I wanted to give readers a great love/adventure story, and the
opportunity to delve into the countrys tough and colourful beauty,
but I also wanted to be able to share with them an important and
dramatic part of its history. Readers both here and in Crete are
telling me the novel is gripping, taking them right into the heart of
the place and its people, and making them want to take a trip
there themselves!
Callys Way, published by Iguana Books, is available in both print
and e-book versions through Amazon. For more information about
