Menomonee Falls May 24. Photos by Thomas J. McKillen
The Sussex Village Board approved the removal of four of
the five basketball hoops at Armory Park May 27.
Trustee Matt Petricca said the hoops are located in the
northeast corner of the parking lot. Information from village
staff indicated that the hoops are not frequently used and that
removing them would create additional room for parking for
baseball tournaments and games.
In addition, the board supported the removal of two aban-
doned volleyball poles near the Lions building at Village
Park. Petricca noted that the sand volleyball courts are more
frequently used than the two volleyball items near the Lions
building.
In another matter, the board approved a tree service con-
tract with Wachtel Tree Service, which had the lowest bid
among the three firm that submitted quotes to the village.
Under the contract, Wachtel will conduct a tree inventory
that will provide complete information on the location, size,
species and health of trees in parks and right-of-ways. Such
information will help the village for future tree replacements,
according to information from village staff.
Approved
The board approved a certified survey map related to the
additional of a second drive at Lannon Stone Products, N52
W23096. Trustee Pat Tetzlaff explained that when Lannon
Stone purchased the quarry from the Vulcan firm it began to
make several changes, including adding the second drive-
way.

The Sussex Village Board gave a formal
commendation to Pat Plude and Barb Zoellick
May 27 for their work on village committee.
Its not often you get citizens like Pat and
Barb to serve as long as they do and do a
great job for the community, Village President
Greg Goetz said during the presentation.
These committees are a lot of times very hard
to fill and get involvement from citizens in the
village to give up that time, since everybody
has such a busy schedule. Were very proud of
both of them.
Plude served on the villages Water
Commission and the Public Works Committee
from 1988 until recently. Plude thanked the
board for the recognition.
Zoellick served on the Park and Recreation
Board from May 11,2004 until recently.
In another matter at the board, Trustee Tim
Dietrich said the Pauline Haass Public Library
will create the position of digital services coor-
dinator. Dietrich said the person in that posi-
tion will identify and investigate new technolo-
gies, and train current staff.
The person for the post will have to have a
Masters Degree in Library Science. Dietrich
said the position will entail 86 different top-
ics.
Its something that we need over there
and were looking forward to that person giv-
ing us some new direction in that area,
Dietrich said.
According to a May 21 report from Library
Director Kathy Klager, Adult and Teen
Services Librarian Adele Loria will have the
new position incorporated into her current job
responsibilities.
Dietrich also added that he was recently
named president of the Pauline Haass Public
Library board.

BY SCOTT MANLEY
VICE PRESIDENT OF GOVERNMENT
RELATIONS, WISCONSIN MANUFACTURERS &
COMMERCE
Last week the U.S. EPA proposed a
global warming regulation that will signifi-
cantly increase the cost of electricity for
Wisconsin consumers, and kill thousands of
jobs.
The rule targets our fleet of coal-fired
power plants, and is likely to inflict dramat-
ic and irreversible harm to our economy if it
is allowed to move forward.
Numerous studies have been done
attempting to predict the cost of EPA's rule
and the impact it will have on higher elec-
tric rates for homeowners and businesses.
For example, the U.S. Chamber of
Commerce recently released a study show-
ing that the rule will cost consumers in our
region $3.3 billion per year in higher elec-
tricity prices.
Another study done by NERA Economic
Consultants predicted the rule will cost con-
sumers between $13 billion and $17 billion
per year. Yet another study released by the
Heritage Foundation predicts the rule will
cost a family of four $1,200 per year by
2023.
No matter which study turns out to be
most accurate, its clear the EPA rule will be
tremendously expensive, and that added
expense will ultimately mean that you and I
pay more for electricity. A lot more.
The EPA's global warming rule will be
especially destructive to manufacturing jobs
in our state. Wisconsin has the second most
manufacturing jobs per capita in the United
States, and those jobs rely upon affordable
and reliable energy to remain viable.
The electric rate spikes inevitably result-
ing from this new rule will make it much
more costly to manufacture goods in
Wisconsin, providing an incentive to shift
that production to another state or another
country. In the end, many middle-class
working families will pay the cost of this rule
with their job.
Just how many jobs will be lost because
of President Obama and his EPA's ideologi-
cal war on coal? The studies predict stag-
gering numbers.
The U.S. Chamber study predicts
224,000 Americans will lose their jobs
every year between now and 2030
because of the EPA rule. Closer to home,
the analysis suggests 31,700 jobs will be
lost in the five-state census region that
includes Wisconsin.
The NERA Economic Consultant analy-
sis was equally dire. It predicts 2.85 million
lost jobs in the United States by the year
2033.
By any measure, the EPAs proposed
rule will dramatically increase energy
prices and result in thousands of lost jobs in
Wisconsin and throughout the country. It
raises a fair question about what benefit, if
any, we get for this considerable economic
pain.
The answer to this question is precious
little.
The rule is expected to reduce carbon
dioxide levels in the United States by 970
million tons by the year 2030. Although
that sounds like a lot, it is essentially mean-
ingless in the global scale of things.
While the EPA has us busy destroying
jobs and our economy in the name of glob-
al warming orthodoxy, the rest of the world
will increase carbon emissions by 4.7 bil-
lion tons over the same time period.
For those keeping score at home, that
means other countries will collectively
increase carbon emissions by six tons for
every ton reduced by Americans under the
EPA rule. So much for saving the planet.
The EPAs new global warming rule is a
lose-lose proposition for energy consumers
and workers. It represents the worst kind of
regulation in that it has enormous and
painful costs, and essentially no benefit.
President Obama should explain why
middle class manufacturing workers in
Wisconsin should lose thousands of family-
supporting jobs each year in the name of
global warming alarmism, while other coun-
tries continue to increase emissions.
Wisconsinites deserve to know why we
should be forced to commit an act of unilat-
eral economic disarmament.

JUNETEENTH DAY I S THURSDAY, JUNE 19
C E L E B R AT E F R E E D OM
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, is
the name given to emancipation day by
African-Americans in Texas. On that day in
1865 Union Major-General Gordon
Granger read General Orders, No.3 to the
people of Galveston. It stated:
"The people of Texas are informed that,
in accordance with a proclamation from the
Executive of the United States, all slaves are
free. This involves an absolute equality of
personal rights and rights of property
between former masters and slaves, and
the connection heretofore existing between
them becomes that between employer and
hired labor. The freedmen are advised to
remain quietly at their present homes and
work for wages. They are informed that
they will not be allowed to collect at mili-
tary posts and that they will not be support-
ed in idleness either there or elsewhere."
Large celebrations on June 19 began in
1866 and continued regularly into the
early 20th century. The African-Americans
treated this day like the Fourth of July and
the celebrations contained similar events. In
the early days, the celebration included a
prayer service, speakers with inspirational
messages, reading of the emancipation
proclamation, stories from former slaves,
food, red soda water, games, rodeos and
dances.
The celebration of June 19 as emanci-
pation day spread from Texas to the neigh-
boring states of Louisiana, Arkansas and
Oklahoma. It has also appeared in
Alabama, Florida, and California as
African-American Texans migrated.
In many parts of Texas, ex-slaves pur-
chased land, or "emancipation grounds,"
for the Juneteenth gathering. Examples
include: Emancipation Park in Houston, pur-
chased in 1872; what is now Booker T.
Washington Park in Mexia; and

JUNETEENTH DAY I S THURSDAY, JUNE 19
C E L E B R AT E F R E E D OM
On June 3 the Milwaukee Common
Council overwhelmingly approved
Juneteenth Day as an optional holiday
for city employees. The annual holiday
falls on June 19 and marks the date that
the last enslaved people of African
descent received word of the
Emancipation Proclamation.
Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs
authored the legislation, which was co-
sponsored by 11 Council colleagues.
Juneteenth Day is a time of reflection
on history, remembrance of culture, and
celebration of family and community. It is
important that we allow city workers the
option of a paid holiday (using vacation)
for Juneteenth, Alderwoman Coggs said.
City employees may now take the option-
al paid holiday by using vacation time on
another paid holiday in the same calen-
dar year.
Juneteenth Day does not change the
tot al number of annual paid holidays,
and if it falls on a work day, departments
will remain open and workers will not
receive holiday premium pay. Although
President Abraham Lincoln issued the
Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1,
1863, Juneteenth Day recognizes the
date Major General Gordon Granger
and his regiment of Union soldiers landed
at Galveston, Texas, and freed the
enslaved Africans there in 1865.
The Common Council passed similar
legislation in March 2014 recognizing
March 31 as Cesar E. Chavez Day, an
optional holiday to honor the birthday of
Cesar Chavez, a champion of civil rights,
labor rights, voting rights, and womens
rights.
Juneteenth approved as
optional holiday for city of
Milwaukee employees
Emancipation park in East Austin.
Celebration of Juneteenth declined dur-
ing World War II but revived in 1950 at the
Texas State Fair Grounds in Dallas. Interest
and participation fell away during the late
1950's and 1960's as attention focused on
expansion of freedom for African-
Americans. In the 1970's Juneteenth
revived in some communities. For example,
in Austin the Juneteenth celebration
returned in 1976 after a 25 year hiatus.
The preceding information was taken
form the Texas State Library and Archives
Commission Web site.

I was born on June 14, 1777. I am more than just cloth shaped into a design. I am the refuge of the
worlds oppressed people. I am the silent sentinel of freedom. I am the emblem of the
greatest sovereign nation on earth. I am the inspiration for which American
patriots gave their lives and fortunes. I have led your sons and daughters
into battle from Valley Forge to the bloody ridges of Vietnam to the
sands of the Persian Gulf. I walk in silence with each of your
honored dead, to their final resting place beneath the silent white
crosses, row upon row. I have flown through peace and war,
strife and prosperity, and amidst it all I had ben respected.
My red stripessymbolize the blood spilled in the defense
of this glorious nation. My white stripessignify the
burning tears shed by Americans who lost their sons and
daughters. My starsclustered together, unify the 50 states
as one, for God and country. "Old Glory" is my nickname
and proudly I wave on high. Honor me, respect me, defend
me with your lives and your fortunes. Never let my enemies
tear me down from my lofty position, lest I never return. Keep
alight the fires of patriotism and strive earnestly for the spirit of
your public, and I shall remain the bulwark of peace and
freedom for all mankind.

BY SCOTT C. FELLENZ
DVM, FAMILY PET CLINIC
Dogs evolved from wolves around 15,000 years
ago. Modern DNA analysis proves that dogs
evolved from wolves, their DNA is almost identical.
In fact, dogs have been reclassified from Canis famil-
iaris to Canis lupus familiaris, to reflect that they are
a very close relative to the wolf (Canis lupus).
Dogs are said to be man (and womans) best
friend. This may sound clich but there is no planer
truth. Dogs are one of the most popular companion
animals in the world. Most people consider them to
be an important part of the family. Dogs provide:
companionship, protection, aid to the handicapped,
military and police services, help with raising live-
stock, search and rescue, medical diagnosis of dis-
eases, and increase health for their owners.
Service dogs can be trained to warn their own-
ers of hypoglycemia, to detect cancer of the bladder
and melanomas of the skin with great accuracy. Dog
owners have lower blood pressure and heart rates,
cholesterol, and triglycerides. They can be a set of
eyes for the blind, hands for paralysis victims and
help people with anxiety disorders such as our return-
ing veterans with PTSD. Police dogs can track crimi-
nals and military dogs can be used to detect bombs,
helping to save human lives. Blood hounds have
such an incredible sense of smell that they can track
a person by smelling skin cells that are shed from a
kidnap victim locked in the trunk of a car. Anyone
who has ever had a dog will tell you, anecdotally,
that they can understand human emotions. This was
previously thought untrue by the scientific community.
It wasnt until recently that MRI studies have shown
that dogs actually do read human emotions, similar-
ly to human infants. They seem to
have empathy and sympathy.
Throughout most of the 1900s there was not a
lot of scientific research on the cognitive abilities of
dogs. However, around 1975 that began to change.
In 1995 Brian Hare Ph.D., an evolutionary anthro-
pologist and director of Duke Canine Cognition
Center, made an observation while studying chim-
panzees ability to understand human gestures. He
was looking at a chimps ability to interpret the inten-
tion if a person was pointing at one of two turned
over cups, one with a treat. They had a difficult time
teaching chimps to look under the cup by pointing, if
they could do it at all. Dr. Hare came to the realiza-
tion that My dog can do that. In fact most dogs
instinctively understand that if a person is pointing to
something, it is significant. This was an important
finding because it helped to answer how dogs
evolved from wolves and became domesticated.
Through selection the modern dog is changed
more dramatically evolutionarily by man than any
other domestic animal. Modern man has placed
even greater selective pressure on dogs due to the
many different jobs that dogs have. There are dogs
that were bred purely for companionship such as the
Chihuahua, dogs to herd farm animals such as the
border collie, dogs that retrieve game such as the
Labrador, dogs for personal protection such as the
Doberman pincher and dogs that hunt different
species of game from mice to lions such as the terriers
and the Rhodesian ridgeback, respectively. In the
process man has developed breeds as small as the
tea cup Chihuahua and Poodle weighing less than 2
lbs. to the Mastiff weighing greater than 200 lbs.
Relative to other mammals dogs have above
average cognitive abilities in the following areas:
comprehending visual gestures, learning new words,
understanding the audiences perspective, copying
others actions, and recruiting help. However, there
is no scientific evidence that dogs experience guilt.
This is why reprimanding a dog after the fact does no
good
Dogs are truly humankinds best friend, they
have many amazing abilities. However, companion-
ship is probably the most amazing. Dogs prefer to
be with humans more than with their own kind. They
dont care what you look like or how much money
you have. Their love is unconditional. So on
National Dog Appreciation Day, give your dog a
hug and enjoy that special bond that started some
15,000 years ago and keeps growing stronger
today. Writer Josh Billings once wrote, A dog is the
only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves
himself.
Dogs are mans best friend

After a three-year campaign that included
countless meetings, petitions and letters, the sen-
iors at Scenic View Apartments in Slinger are
enjoying the fruits of their labora hot lunch.
In January, the Senior Dining program
returned to Scenic View Apartments in Slinger
after a seven-year stint at St. Luke's Church at the
corner of Highway 144 and Arthur Road.
Senior Dining is a program offered through the
Aging & Disability Resource Center of
Washington County. It provides people 60 and
older with an affordable, hot meal and an
opportunity for a social interaction.
The efforts to relocate the program were
spearheaded by the building's Resident
Advisory Committee (RAC), a group of tenants
chosen to represent the interests of the seniors
who live there.
"The response has been great," said Jackie
Wilkes, an RAC member. "All the many meet-
ings that were attended by the RAC that was
needed to understand the requirements to make
this possible, that was all worth it. All were met."
Starting in 2010, the RAC undertook efforts
to have the Senior Dining program return to
Scenic View Apartments. The RAC visited other
meal sites in the county, wrote letters to the
Department of Aging, held a public meeting,
surveyed the building's residents and agreed to
sponsor and support the program in order to
make the move happen.
"The five members of RACLorna Weber,
Rosemary Obermeyer, Barb Waiter, Nancy
Heilgendorf and Jackie Wilkedid an incredi-
ble job," said Carol Biersach, executive director
of the Slinger Housing Authority, management
of Scenic View Apartments. "They knew what
they wanted and they didn't stop until they suc-
ceeded. Their efforts are now benefiting their
fellow tenants as well as the community."
The response from residents of Scenic View
and the community has been very positive," said
Heilgendorf.
She said her first day there she met some-
one who lived in the building who she had
never seen before.
"It's very good because you live in the same
building and you never see each other," she
said.
Senior Dining is available and open to all
seniors in the community. New diners are
always welcome. For more information or to
sign up for a meal, contact the Aging &
Disability Resource Center at (262) 335-4497.

A home run by Erika Berry was enough for
Germantown against Brookfield Central in the
sectional final June 5, as the Warhawks won
1-0 to advance to their third state tournament
in three years.
Berry said the pitch she connected with
was low and in the middle of the plate.
When you get strikes like that youve got
to take advantage of them, so I did what I had
to do and connected with the ball, Berry said
of her third-inning home run.
Kimmy Soderberg pitched a complete
game shutout for the win.
Shes been big for us two games in a
row, Co-Coach Kurt Raguse said of
Soderberg. Two days earlier, she came out of
the bullpen as Germantown rallied to beat
Homestead.
Raguse noted that Soderberg and Berry
are the teams co-captains. Raguse explained
that Soderberg fields her position well and
changes speed on pitches to keep hitters off
balance.
With the win, Germantown advanced to
the state tournament. The Warhawks will play
Menomonee Falls at 3:30 p.m. June 12 in a
game at the UW-Madison Goodman Field.
Menomonee Falls advanced to the state
tournament with a 2-1 win over Watertown.
Kelly Berglund recorded a complete game
win while Justine Ertl and Ashley Zdroik both
drove in runs for Menomonee Falls.

Village Administrator Jeremy Smith said
the motion involved combining two parcels
into one through the certified survey map.
The public will benefit from the dual drive-
ways much more than they will care about the
two pieces of quarry (property) coming togeth-
er, Smith said.
Village President Greg Goetz added the
second driveway will be added safety addi-
tion to the area.

Tent Set Up Menomonee Falls
Since 1959, Camp Pow Wow has been
providing outdoor recreational opportunities
for adults and children with disabilities.
Located in scenic Menomonee Park, Pow
Wow gives campers a taste of the camp expe-
rience without going too far from home.
During the week, the campers stay in medium
sized, canvas tents. We're looking for a group
of 10-40 people to help set up these tents in
order to prepare for camp. This task should
take about 2 hours and free snacks will be pro-
vided. The date and time of this opportunity
are flexible, and a group may schedule to help
out on an upcoming weekday or weekend.
There will be some heavy lifting and a bit
of maneuvering required in order to set up the
tents.

Landscape plastics recycling event June 14
Johnson's Nursery, Inc. headquartered at
W180 N6275 Marcy Road, in Menomonee
Falls, will be holding the semi-annual landscape
plastics recycling collection event on Saturday,
June 14 from 8 a.m. until noon. This recycling
event is a cooperative effort between Johnson's
Nursery, Inc. and the Waukesha County
Department of Parks and Land Use that allows
residents and businesses to drop off used plastic
growing pots, plant trays, and plant containers
free of charge for recycling. These plastic plant
containers must be free of plant debris, tags, and
metals and will be sorted on site by plastic type
in identified containers.
This collaboration provides an important
recycling service for Waukesha County and
Southeastern WI that is made possible through
this unique partnership stated Rebecca
Mattano, Waukesha County Solid Waste
Supervisor.
Johnsons Nursery, Inc. has been in business
for over 54 years. As the company grows, it con-
tinues to supply its customers with high quality
plants and services but is also doing its part to
reduce plastic horticultural waste. "This program
provides a sustainable option for residents and
businesses to close the loop through recycling
used pots. These pots provide the necessary
materials to manufacture new pots and ultimately
divert these plastics from our local landfills, said
Chad Johnson, President and owner of Johnson's
Nursery, Inc.
Across the U.S., millions of pounds of agricul-
tural plastics are discarded in local landfills every
year although, according to East Jordan Plastics,
Inc., the manufacturer and recycler of plastic
plant containers, recycling plastic plant contain-
ers can recover upwards of 60% of the energy
put into processing the product initially while sav-
ing landfill space.
For more information about the landscape
plastics recycling event at Johnson's Nursery, Inc.,
visit www.johnsonsnursery.com, call 262-252-
4988 or contact Waukesha County Recycling at

Thats So Boring
Losing interest in your job? Tired of performing the
same tasks year after year? Sick of the office politics?
Feeling underpaid and unappreciated? Many workers go
through this plateau phase of employment. It is a
common malady and thankfully it is curable. Without
taking drastic measures, you can learn to enjoy your job
again.
Often when we start a new job, we are excited about
the level of responsibility and the new environment and
people. We tend to work hard to impress our supervisor.
But after a few years, the boredom sets in and we begin
to think we could do our jobs in our sleep. What was
once challenging no longer takes much thought or effort
and a lackadaisical attitude ensues.
Researchers have found that a bad attitude produces
bad work, so attitude is where well begin. Try to
remember back to when you first started the job. Think
about what it was about the position that you relished.
Was it learning a new skill or using an old one? Was it
working with customers or the fact that you didnt have
to work directly with clients anymore? Was it the level of
responsibility or the lack thereof? Try to pinpoint all the
areas you liked and write them down.
How you respond to this hump of boredom directly
affects the outcome. If you give up hoping you can make
your job better, youll spiral further into a pit of
darkness. The second option, looking for another job,
will only temporarily solve your dilemmain three or
four years youll be right back where you are today. The
third option, however, will help you find ways to
rekindle your enthusiasm and change your attitude and
performance.
Before making a move, ask yourself if you have a
career goal right now. As we mature, we often view life
from a different perspective which can change our career
goals.
Consider your new career goals. Where do you want to
end up? Learn more about the product or service your
company sells. Make sure your suggestions are
manageable, considering your current workload, and
make sure youre doing good work. A plan that benefits
the company as well as yourself will speak volumes
about your sincerity and increase your value as an
employee.
Having a clear path of goals to follow no matter how
small will give you something to work toward, and more
importantly, a reason to work besides a paycheck.
