Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What is the Bilingual Authorization (BiAu)?
The Bilingual Authorization replaces the former Californias old Bilingual Cross-cultural
Language and Academic Development (BCLAD) credential.
The BiAu allows you to teach in a K-12 bilingual classroom (e.g., Transitional or Maintenance
bilingual program, or Dual Language Immersion classroom)
BiAu may be added on to a Multiple Subject, Single Subject, or Education Specialist Credential.

2. What are the reasons for getting a BiAu?
Shortage of bilingual teachers who can communicate with linguistically and culturally diverse
students and their families.

3. What are benefits associates with obtaining a BiAu?
Increases job opportunities
Enhances skills in teaching the target language
Increases knowledge of diverse cultures
Promotes global understanding

4. What are the requirements to obtain BiAu in an Asian language at CSUF?
Proof of Target language proficiency (Passing of CSET LOTE (Subtest III) in the target language)
Pass two additional BiAu courses in the target language (Bilingual methods (i.e., EDSC 446V/K/S)
and culture (i.e., EDSC 541V/K/S)
Meet Fieldwork requirement (embedded in the EDSC446: bilingual method course)
Provide Proof of MS/SS Teaching Credential

5. What are the steps to take in order to apply to become a BiAu candidate at CSUF?
Sign up to take the CSET LOTE (Subtest III) in the target Asian language.
Complete the CSU Mentor application to be admitted at the University.
Complete an application to CSUF Teacher Education Program (please refer to the multiple
subject or single subject credential program website), and indicate in the application that you
are interested in the Asian BiAu program.
When you sign up for the required interview for the credential program, sign up with
the Asian BiAu coordinator and start the application for the BiAu.

6. If I already have a credential, what do I need to do to obtain my Bilingual
Authorization?
Fill out the Post Credential Application form and email/contact the Asian BiAu coordinator.
Pass the CSET LOTE (Subtest III) in the target language.
Complete two BiAu courses (B- or better).
Once you have completed these requirements, you will need to send in your transcripts, CSET
test verification and credential information to CSUFs Teacher Credential Office with a $25
application fee. The Credential office will verify the requirements and apply to the state for
your Bilingual Authorization to the state.

7. What if I am already in a credential program at another university that does not offer
Chinese, Korean or Vietnamese Bilingual Authorization?
You will follow the steps for #6 and apply for the Bilingual Authorization AFTER you complete
your teaching credential. However, you can take the CSET LOTE III and the required classes any
time (as soon as possible is recommended).

8. When are the BiAu clourses offered and are they On-campus?
All of the required BiAu courses are online so no travel is necessary.
We offer the classes when there is a demand, and the schedule is updated each semester.
If we dont offer a class, you may take a BiAu course through the Asian CSU consortium or pass
CSET LOTE (Subtest IV or V) in lieu of the BiAu courses.

9. How do I register for the class if it is not offered through my campus?
You will register either through Concurrent Enrollment or through Extended
Education/Continuing Ed.
Please check the campus website for the registration process or contact the Asian BiAu
coordinator.

10. Any financial support available?
Scholarships are available for STEM majors (up to $10, 000)
