DOUG MOODY fans will be delighted with the concert on Friday, June13 at 7pm at Little
Theater on the Farm. He is featured in the band The Roadside Attraction, which is the real deal
when it comes to American roots music. Elements of country, rock , bluegrass, blues, folk, jazz and
rock are sewn into the fabric of their sound. This show will be entertaining and full of energy and
emotion. The core of this ensemble is singer songwriter Bob Stump on guitar, Doug Moody on fiddle
and Johnny Resk on percussion. When it comes to sound, their three- part harmony singing and
virtuoso musicianship set them apartThe sound of Doug Moodys fiddle alongside Bob Stumps
singing can be likened to Willie Nelson and Mickey Raphaels harmonica. Currently, Bob has inked
a publishing deal with music publishers in Nashville and L.A. and recently his song the Cowboy in
Me has aired on Sirius XM satellite radio.( www.stumpsongs.com )
Based in upstate NY the band performs concerts and club dates in the Northeast. Tickets: $8 ($5
seniors and students). Refreshments and raffles available. Visit www.littletheater27.org for more

KEN GOTTRYS PROGRAM, A POTPOURRI OF STO-
RIES OF CAMBRIDGE TO BE PRESENTED AT THE
CAMBRIDGE MUSEUM ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18,
AT 7:00 P.M. Ken Gottry, local historian, will present a program
at the Cambridge Historical Society & Museum entitled, Ash
Grove, James Bond, and the Historical Society. The presenta-
tion will start with the connection between Black Hole Hollow
Farm in Ash Grove and master spy James Bond. Also included
will be the 1854 scandal at the fair on Avenue A, as well as the
1954 Wheelbarrow Bet. Find out about moving the body of Philip
Embury and the original 1950 design of the CCS building. Also
on tap will be the famous Cambridge girls athletic teams of the
1930s, so good that Washington County suspended all girls ath-
letics for several years. And did you know that Cambridge was
once the home of the pistol that fired the shot heard Round the
World which marked the start of the American Revolution, and
Mark Twain, rather reluctantly, gave a lecture at Ackley Hall?
These are just some of the topics Mr. Gottry will discuss; an
evening you dont want to miss. The Museum will open at 6:00
p.m. for tours of the building with the presentation beginning at
7:00 p.m. There will be light refreshments following the
program. The Historical Society is located at 12 Broad Street, just
down the street from the closed Cambridge Hotel.

Soybeans might be more profitable than corn now, but that doesn't mean they will be at harvest
time. Here, a look at soybean-to-corn price ratios, says Gary Schnitkey, University of Illinois.
Both corn and soybean prices have fallen since last summer, with corn falling more than soybeans.
Because corn prices have fallen more the soybean prices, the soybean-to-corn price ratio has
increased, signaling that soybeans have become relatively more profitable than corn. This leads to
speculation that corn acres will decrease in 2014, while soybean acres will increase. Acreage shifts
may occur. However, high soybean-to-corn prices in the spring do not necessarily signal high soybean-
to-corn price ratios at harvest. Therefore,
relative returns between corn and soybeans
may change.
Spring Soybean-to-Corn Price Ratios.
The soybean-to-corn price ratio equals the
soybean price divided by the corn price.
Higher soybean-to-corn price ratios mean
that soybean prices are higher relative to
corn prices, which lead to soybeans being
relatively more profitable corn. Obviously,
lower soybean-to-corn price ratios indicate
higher corn returns relative to soybean
returns.
Herein, soybean-to-corn price ratios were calculated using projected prices, which are used to set
crop insurance guarantees. Projected prices are average of settlement prices of Chicago Mercantile
Exchange (CME) contract during the month of February. The December contract is used for corn
and the November contract for soybeans. Use of these projected prices provides a good indication
of relative prices in the spring prior to planting.
The 2014 projected prices are $4.62 for corn and $11.36 for soybeans, leading to a soybean-to-corn
price ratio of 2.46 (11.36/4.62). It is useful to compare the 2.46 ratio to historical ratios to gain a feel
whether the 2014 ratio is high or low. Two distinct periods exist between 1972 through 2013 (see
Figure 1). Between 1972 through 1998, the soybean-to-corn price ratio averaged 2.40. The 2.46
price ratio for 2014 is above the 1972-1998 average, but would not have been one of the highest
ratios during the 1972 -1998 period (see Figure 1). During this period, U.S. soybean acres increased
more than corn acres. U.S. corn acres were 67 million acres in 1972 and 80 million in 1998. From
1972 to 1998, corn acres increased 19%. During the same time period soybeans acres increase
53% from 47 million acres in 1972 to 72 million acres in 1998.
Something to keep an eye on.

FRIDAY TRIVIA WITH KEVIN
Test Your Brain Power, 9 PM
The traffic circle in Green-
wich, NY is seeing a lot of
action this Spring! A new,
state-of-the art facility is
nearl y fi ni shed for
CARMODY FORD, and
we've all watched the con-
struction each week, culmi-
nating in the beautiful building that is now nearly completed!
Carmody Ford, a pioneer in the businesses of Greenwich,
has brought sales and service of Ford Cars and Trucks
and pre-owned vehicles for many years now. The family
owned business is committed to the community and has
now brought us BONEYARD BBQ, which is located on
their sales lot. John (JC) Carmody, owner of Carmody
Ford, is excited about the new venture and told us that he
"wanted to bring some excitement to Greenwich and to
the traffic circle". "There are several new unique busi-
nesses in Greenwich", said John...."We wanted to be a
part of adding some spark to the community and to the
traffic circle." Boneyard BBQ is now open Thursday - Sat-
urday and offers a variety of mouth watering BBQ, salads,
and more. "There is new space in our renovated building
to place the new BBQ
trailer during the win-
ter", says Carmody,
"So we anticipate being
open year round.
People can come in to the building and enjoy the outdoor
experience even when the weather isn't as nice."
Stop by and congratulate JC and the staff at Carmody
Ford and Boneyard BBQ on the opening of their new ven-
ture and the beautiful renovations to their dealership....and
make sure to save some time to stay for lunch! It will be
well worth the stop!

GEORGE VAN HOOKS EARLY
PAINTINGS: Joys in the Attic
Amid the boxes and family memorabilia at the top of the
narrow back stairs of his Cambridge NY home, gallery owner
Sue Clary was delighted to discover a treasure trove in the
attic of her friend, highly respected artist George Van Hook.
Now known mostly for his plein air oil paintings that cel-
ebrate nature, Van Hooks early works reveal places and
subjects and techniques that preceded his present immer-
sion in the rural landscape. The Attic Collection is now on
display at McCartees Barn Fine Arts Gallery in Salem, where
Sue and Bill Clary hosted an artists reception on May 23rd.
Born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Van Hook spent
many summers in mid-coastal Maine, where he gained an
early appreciation for both art and landscape. His desire to
paint led him to Paris; during the early morning hours, he
was often able to enter the Louvre to copy the masters and
be inspired by the classics. He and his wife would later move
to California, and the paintings capturing local California
scenes include one found in the attican early award-win-
ner.
One of his 1979 paintings, titled Old Town, marked the
unintended broadening of his horizons. Van Hook and his
peers were waiting for a figure model who failed to show
up, so they decided to just go out and paint. It was windy,
he recounted, So I ducked into an alley. The result is an
arresting painting that captures the light of coastal Califor-
nia and where a truck is the focal point.
The Attic Collection includes still lifes that depict the intri-
cacy of silken fabric, the coloring of pears, the sheen of
light reflected on a pitcher. Its impossible to think that these
stunning paintings were stashed up in an attic! marvels
Sue Clary as she contemplates the artists evolution and
the beauty of the work. I am so pleased that we are bring-
ing them into the light of day once again!

The story of NV: A
Unique Boutique
and Consignment
Does Cambri dge need
another consignment shop?
This is the question Vicky
Newman-Jones asked her
daughter Nikki Reynolds when approached (yet again) with
the idea of opening a boutique together. If you ask the mother
daughter duo responsible for NV, the newest retail shop in
town, the answer to this question is ABSOLUTELY. After
all, its been a lifelong dream of theirs to own a consignment
boutique.
The woman of NV have learned that having a dream and
making it real is hard work but incredibly rewarding. From
spending hours online finding used retail fixtures to painting
until their arms ached, the two were determined to create
an ideal shopping experience for customers. Coming up
with a name for their boutique proved to be a difficult task.
In the end, they chose simply NV; taking the first initials of
each woman.
The women chose to pursue their business adventure
right in the village of Cambridge at 76 West Main Street.
Since Cambridge has been home to these women for so
many years it was natural to start their dream there.
Now, Cambridge has its share of unique places to shop
but what makes NV different from the rest is that its both a
boutique and a consignment shop in one. NV was created
with the idea to sell both new and like new merchandise
that typically a person would have to travel out of the area
for. The boutique has much to offer: womens, mens,
childrens, shoes, jewelry, crafts and more! They even have
a play area for little ones.
With the help of family, friends, and lots of paint, the long
awaited NV opened its doors October 1
st
. To the delight of
Nikki and Vicky, the shop is thriving with prospective
consignors. Thrifty consumers are encouraged to stop in
frequently since NV receives new merchandise daily.
NV welcomes new cosignors and currently accepts
spring and summer items. Are you creative? The boutique
wants to sell your unique crafts, homemade jewelry, and
gifts as well.Stop in for a visit...you are sure to walk out
with a bag full of NV!

Dear Uncle Wally,
A LETTER FROM A READER:
My husband and I have often enjoyed your wit and offering of
interesting information, our favorite being the column on the
Presidents car, the Beast.
However, this recent column about oil, while extremely
thought-provoking and informative, overlooks completely the pink
elephant in the room! - i.e. the effect of continuing to burn oil
and process and refine oil, on the Earths atmosphere, which is
detrimental to all life forms on the planet- moreso as time goes
on.
You may not agree- perhaps youre one of thos who scoff at
the idea that the planet is going under due to mans dirty hab-
its/addictions (like oil). Or perhaps you just overlooked it!
Youre such an entertaining writer- how about (even if just for
the practice exercise of it) writing in favor of finding alternative
energy sources?
Quote: If aliens did visit us, Id be embarassed to tell them we
still dig fossil fuels from the ground as a source of energy.-
Neil deGrasse Tyson
Thank you- Sincerely, Deb Deichler
Thanks for the comment, Deb.
I agree, we need to curb our polluting ways. However, I am not
convinced that man is the major culprit in the polluting of our
planet. For instance, 36 active volcanoes*, sun spots, and other
factors over which man has no control are immense contribut-
ing factors.
Then there are the so-called do-gooder politicians who de-
cided to solve the problem by letting people pay to pollute.
The only thing that is doing is putting more money into their
pockets and more power in their hands. Since it has become a
political issue, it is not likely a reasonable resolution will be
reached. Result: we all suffer. By utilizing the sources of energy
that God has given us, at least we can enjoy life on Earth, even
as it wanes. So, drill and enjoy a good economy!
*Re: How much pollution does a volcano produce?
Beside particulate (ash and other particles), volcanoes can re-
lease enormous quantities of gases, including the following pol-
lutants:
H2O water vapor
CO2 carbon dioxide
SO2 sulfur dioxide
H2S hydrogen sulfide
CO carbon monoxide
HCl hydrogen chloride
HF hydrogen flouride
Even non-explosive basaltic volcanoes (Hawaii, Iceland) can
release damaging quantities of pollutants in the form of "vog",
or volcanic smog. The Hawaii volcano observatory has recently
issued warnings for sulfur dioxide emissions and restricted ac-
cess to areas around Kilauea. The 1783 Icelandic basalt erup-
tion resulted in emission of over 100 tons of SO2 in less than 8
months- killing humans, livestock and damaging crops in both
Iceland and Europe. Gas emissions during the eruption of the
Siberian traps may have caused the great Permian extinction
250 million years ago. Volcanic SO2 emissions can range up to
10 million tons per day.
