I. Operation
1 Running In
No special running in is necessary, but a few precautions in the first 1 000 km
(600 miles) may add to the performance, economy and life of your Mazda.
Dont race the engine.
Dont maintain one constant speed for long.
Dont drive constantly at full throttle or high engine rpm for extended
periods of time.
Avoid unnecessary hard stops.
Avoid full throttle starts.
Dont tow a trailer.
Ignition Switch Positions
LOCK
The steering wheel locks to protect
against theft. Only in this position
can the key be removed.
ACC (Accessory)
The steering wheel unlocks and
some electrical accessories will
operate.
ON
This is the normal running position
after the engine is started. The
warning lights should be inspected
before the engine is started.
START
The engine is started in this position. It will crank until you release the key; then
it returns to the ON position.
To change the angle of the steering wheel, stop the vehicle, pull the tilt wheel
release lever under the steering column down, adjust the wheel, then push the
release lever up to lock the column.

Remote Free-Wheel (RFW) Switch
The RFW switch automatically disengages the front wheels from the drive
assembly when pressed. When you dont need to shift to 4WD while driving, or
you want to save on fuel consumption, press the RFW switch to disengage the
front wheels from the drive assembly. This will allow the front wheels to rotate
freely without assistance from the drive assembly.
2H to 4H
When the RFW LOCK indicator light is off :
1. Stop the vehicle in a safe area away from traffic.
2. Shift the transfer shift lever to 4H. The RFW LOCK indicator light will illuminate.
When the RFW LOCK indicator light is on :
Shift the transfer shift lever to 4H. You can make the shift while driving.
4H to/from 4L
1. Stop the vehicle in a safe area away from traffic.
2. Depress the clutch pedal.
3. Shift the transfer shift lever from 4H to 4L (or from 4L to 4H).

Use the transfer shift lever to shift from 2WD to
4WD, and vice versa. The transfer shift lever
has four positions:
9 Transfer Shift Lever
2H (2WD) : In this position, only the rear
wheels are powered. Use this position for
normal driving on paved surfaces.
4H (4WD, high range) : In this position, all
four wheels are powered. Use this position for normal driving on sandy, muddy
or slippery surfaces.
N (Neutral) : No wheels are powered.
4L (4WD, low range) : In this position, all four wheels are powered. Use this
position when climbing steep hills that require greater traction than 4H, or when
descending steep hills that require braking assistance.
Various Lockouts:
8 Automatic Transmission Controls
7 Audio System 5 Instrument Cluster and Indicators
6 Air Conditioning System
Transmission Ranges
The shift lever must be in P or N to operate
the starter.
P (Park) : P locks the transmission and
prevents the front wheels from rotating.
R (Reverse) : In position R, the vehicle
moves only backward. You must be at a
complete stop before shifting to or from R.
N (Neutral) : In N, the wheels and
transmission are not locked. The vehicle will
roll freely even on the slightest incline unless
the parking brake or brakes are on.
D (Drive) : D is the normal driving position.
From a stop, the transmission will
automatically shift through a 5-gear sequence.
3-2 : The 3 or 2 position is helpful when
driving in slow-moving traffic and when
climbing a hill.
1 : Use the 1 position when pulling heavy
loads and climbing steep grades.
Indicates the shift lever can be
shifted freely into any position.
Indicates that you must hold in
the lock-release button to shift.

Without overdrive
If the transmission is frequently shifting
between 5th and 4th gear, the overdrive
should be switched off. The
transmission will now shift only between
gears 1 to 4.

II. Safety
1 SRS Air Bags
The supplemental restraint systems (SRS) has two basic subsystems :
The air bag system with inflators and air bags.
The electrical system with crash sensors and diagnostic module.
The air bags are mounted in the following locations : the center of the steering
wheel, the passenger side of the dashboard and in the outboard sides of the
front seatbacks. They are out of sight until activated.

V. Maintenance
1 Tyre Inflation Pressure
Inspect the antifreeze protection and coolant level in the coolant reservoir at
least once a yearat the beginning of the winter seasonand before travelling
where temperatures may drop below freezing. The coolant should be at full in
the radiator and between the FULL and LOW marks on the coolant reservoir
when the engine is cool.
Inspect all tyre pressures monthly (including the spare) when the tyres are cold.
Maintain recommended pressures for the best ride, top handling and minimum
tyre wear.

(F2 and G6 engines) Gasoline engine
(V6 engine)
*Some models
Changing the engine oil should be done by an expert repairer. We recommend
an Authorized Mazda Repairer.
The brakes and clutch draw fluid from the same
reservoir. Inspect the fluid level in the reservoir
regularly. It should be kept at MAX. The level
normally drops with accumulated distance, a
condition associated with wear of brake and
clutch linings. If it is excessively low, have the
brake/clutch system inspected by an expert
repairer. We recommend an Authorized Mazda
Repairer.

1 Immobiliser System*
The optional immobiliser system allows the engine to start only with a key the
system recognises. If someone attempts to start the engine with an
unrecognised key, the engine will not start, thereby helping to prevent the theft
of your vehicle.
Arming
The system is armed when the ignition switch
is turned from the ON to the ACC position. The
security indicator light in the instrument panel
flashes every 2 seconds until the system is
disarmed.
Disarming
The system is disarmed when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position
with the correct ignition key. The security indicator light illuminates for about 3
seconds and goes out.
2 Keyless Entry System*
2 Engine Coolant
1. Be sure the vehicle is on a level surface.
2. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
3. Turn it off and wait at least 5 minutes for the oil to return to the sump.
4. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, and reinsert it fully.
5. Pull it out again and examine the level. Its OK between Low and Full. But if
its near or below Low, add enough oil to bring the level to Full.
6. Make sure the O-ring on the dipstick is positioned properly before reinserting
the dipstick.

Front Seatbelt Pretensioner and Load Limiting Systems
In moderate or greater frontal or near-frontal accidents, the front air bag and
pretensioner systems deploy simultaneously. The pretensioners take up slack
in the front seatbelts as the air bags are expanding. The seatbelt pretensioner
system cannot provide
adequate protection in an
accident if the seatbelt is
not fastened properly.
The load limiting system
releases belt webbing in
a controlled manner to
reduce belt force on the
occupants chest.
Pretensioner tightens
seatbelt in a collision.
Load-limiter releases the
belt in a controlled fashion.

2 To Remove the Spare Tyre
1. Insert the jack lever through the slot in the rear panel and fully into the
spare tyre carrier socket.
2. For 4WD/High clearance model vehicles, attach the jack handle to jack
lever B.
3. Slowly turn the jack lever or jack handle counter clockwise until the spare
tyre reaches the ground and the chain becomes loose.
4. Pass the retaining plate up through the centre of the spare tyre.
