Statement from the Connecticut Parents Union on the Victory for California
Students in the Vergara vs California Lawsuit

Today's decision by Judge Rolf M. Treu is a victory for all public school parents and students
across the country because it sets a precedent. Finally, there is a shifting in the balance of power
that allows the educational needs of students to outweigh the interest of the status quo..
Athena Wagner, Outreach Coordinator of Connecticut Parents Union said, " f it is
unconstitutional in !alifornia then it is unconstitutional in !onnecticut too"
Gwendolyn Samuel, President of the Connecticut Parents Union said, #$ow it is ti%e for
!onnecticut law%a&ers to ensure students have equal protections under the law as well and align
itself with !alifornia's ruling that states #evidence has been elicited in this trial of the specific
effect of grossly ineffective teachers on students"
Further%ore, !onnecticut has $( M(R) e*cuses to not protect the educational rights of
students based on March ++, +,-,. the state /upre%e !ourt ruled that !onnecticut school
children are guaranteed an adequate standard of quality in their public school0the state
constitution requires "that the public schools provide their students with an education suitable to
give the% the opportunity to be responsible citi1ens able to participate fully in de%ocratic
institutions, such as 2ury service and voting, and to prepare the% to progress to institutions of
higher education, or to attain productive e%ploy%ent and otherwise to contribute to the state's
