In this video, Im going to talk you through using PS-FTP.

PS-FTP is similar in some ways to

Puttybut really its a command line interace as well, but its more s!eciali"ed to u!loading and
downloading iles, although really youre going to use it or u!loading. I tend to use PS-FTP rather
than standard FTP sotware in certain cases, and I ind it !articularly hel!ul when dealing with very
large iles. #nd Im talking about iles in the hundreds o megabytes or even larger. $ou know,
!reviously, Ive dealt with iles that are over a gigabyte in si"e which is e%tremely large and takes a
very long time to u!load. &bviously, it de!ends on your connection, but with such large iles, I 'ust
have to leave them u!loading overnight because o their si"e.
(ut Ive ound with the regular FTP sotware that there were issues. Sometimes, or whatever
reason, it sto!s halway through and it had !roblems recovering rom that, and then I had to start
again, and then that caused issues when the u!load broke again halway through. Some FTP
sotware does su!!ort )resuming,* as its called, which basically means resuming an u!load i an
u!load is canceled in the middle or whatever reason, you can resume rom where you let o.
Some FTP sotware does su!!ort this. PS-FTP su!!orts this and its entirely ree, so thats why Im
going to demonstrate it. So lets start it u!+'ust double-click
&kay, to get started, ty!e in o!en host name. So ty!e in )o!en demosite, dot ino* or you would
'ust ty!e in your host name, which is the site you connect to via FTPand okay, !ress enter. #nd
again, you ty!e in your details to log in asdemositethats the user name!ress enterand the
!assword.
&kay, Ive entered the !assword, and Im connected. #nd it tells you where you are as well. It
doesnt su!!ort as many commands as Putty, but does su!!ort some. For e%am!le, P-.remote
directoryand it tells you where you are on the web server. &kay, so P-. tells you are on the
serverand //P-.tells you where you are on your com!uter. #nd thats im!ortant, because
you have to be in the older locally+/P-. stands or local working directory, eectively+so
locally, on your com!uter, you need to be in the older rom where you want to u!load the iles or
olders. So Im on the deskto!. To change where you are on the server, you could 'ust do 0.
same as beore as on Puttyand actually, i you do /Sit tells you whats in the older. $ou cant
do /S-minus-#/you see that it doesnt su!!ort all these commands it 'ust su!!orts certain
commands. It su!!orts /S.
#nd okay, lets go into demosite ,so it su!!orts 0.so 0. demosite , dot inoand it tells you
which remote directory youre now in/Sand we 'ust have Folder 1okay, and then again,
local !rint working directoryand Im on the deskto!and i I want to change my local older, I
can do local-0.. (ut actually, I ind that 2uite a diicult way to work.

!aste it into the older that I want to u!load the iles or olders rom.
For e%am!le, Ive 'ust created a demo older. I I right clickchoose co!ygo into the older
and then right click !asteand i this were the older that had the iles and olders that I wanted to
u!load, then thats what I would do, and I ind it a lot easier because then you dont need to use the
/-0. command or navigate on your com!uter via PS-FTP, which isnt a very convenient way to
work.
&kay, so Im assuming youve co!ied PS-FTP into the older rom which you want to u!loadand
then you 0. into the older you want to u!load to on your web server. So now what you want to
start doing is u!loading. So again, 'ust let me do/P-.. Im on the deskto! locally in PS-FTP.
#nd on the websiteP-.Im in the demosite , dot ino older. #nd i I do a listing, theres 'ust
one older, called Folder 1.
&kay, to u!load via PS-FTP, you use the )!ut* command, and essentially, you mean )!ut it on my
server* rom the older that you are in locally. So !ut it on my server. So you could 'ust ty!e in a
ile name.
/et me 'ust !ut this out o the way or 'ust a momentand theres a demo-dot-"i! ile...
So i I ty!e )!ut demo-dot-"i!*it u!loads rom the local oldermy com!uterto the website.
#nd its done. So now i I do a listingthere it is. .emo-dot-"i! has a!!eared on the web server.
-hat I ind very useulor recovering rom broken u!loads, you do a )re* a )re!ut*and then
whatever ile it is that you want to re!utre!ut demo dot "i!and then it says )restarting* and its
done. I the ile is ully u!loaded, it will 'ust re!ut instantly, because theres really nothing to
u!load. (ut i its only !artially u!loaded, re!ut will start u!loading your ile rom where it
!reviously got cut o. So thats a really useul eature.
I you want to u!load multi!le iles
(ut actually, 'ust beore I do that, let me 'ust remove the demo-dot-"i! rom the web server so I can
demonstrate thisremove it, and its gone. #nd I do a listingand yes, were 'ust back to having
older 1.
So i you do m-!utand m-!ut I assume stands or )multi!le !uts*so m!utand you can use
wild cardseectively asterisksso m!utstarwould mean u!load everything rom the older
on my com!uter to the older on my website. &r you could do star-dot-"i! or e%am!le, which
would be all the iles or olders ending in dot "i!. So i I do that
&bviously, theres only one, but its a 2uick demonstration o the m!ut command. So its
u!loadingand its done. I we do a listingthe demo-dot-"i! ile is being reu!loaded.
So those are the main commands youll be using in PS-FTP, and as you can see, its a bit more
com!licated than u!loading via the gra!hical FTP sotware, but as I mentioned, the beneit is that it
works very well or u!loading large iles. I ind it works very well or that, and i there are any
issues with the u!load, 'ust use the re!ut command to carry on with the u!load rom where it let
