Buenos Aires, like many other sprawling capitals of the world has the same recurrent

issue: transportation times and traffic jams. Believe me, driving here can be chaotic!
I understand that during vacations we dont feel the stress of having to move around
during the rush hour or, we might not even care how much time it takes to take a taxi from
Palermo to a Boca. !owever, if you were offered the chance to learn a little bit more
about how to use public transportation smartly, as well as walking and "iking around
the city to use your time more efficiently and get the most out of your days# what would
you say?
I own a car "ut I am not em"arrassed to say that I only use it to travel on weekends and
move around at night. $utside of that I enjoy not driving% especially when Im with my little
daughter who sees going down to the su"way or riding a "us as a huge and exciting
adventure.
&o I decided to write and share some info on how to move around in Buenos Aires,
the way we locals do% saving time, money and contri"uting in a way to reduce the '$(
levels "y avoiding using cars and having fewer of them on streets. )t the same time, I am
sure you will enjoy learning a little bit more about Argentine culture, people
watching and hospitality.
*hen planning your stay in B), I recommend first of all identifying which area you are in
or want to be located with the main neigh"orhoods for lodging in B) "eing:
+ Palermo. ,rendy, young, hip, -uiet and relaxing during the day% "usy and
enjoya"le at night. .any restaurants, "ars and "outi-ues for shopping at
independent designers.
+ ecoleta. 'lassy, elegant, aristocrat and a representation of how )rgentina was
heading during the period known as the /01s generation2 34001+45(16. 7rench
style architecture and old "uildings, with a Buenos )ires landmark that is well worth
a visit: the 8ecoleta 'emetery.
+ !owntown. .ore oriented to "usiness, with "ig hotels and surrounded "y "anks,
pu"lic service offices and tall "uildings. 7ull of men and women in suits from
.onday to 7riday and is really frenetic9
+ "an #elmo. ,he old area of the city, once in splendor with magnificent and uni-ue
architecture, "ecame a"andoned after a yellow fever epidemic. !osts the popular
&unday anti-ues flea market and several hidden gems to "e discovered.
Buenos Aires is a pretty easy city to get orientated, due to its s-uare, grid+like layout
with one big avenue every four or five bloc$s. :nowing where to find them and what
direction they run is key to finding the right transportation.
%astest way to move around is su"way, known as the "ubte in Buenos )ires. ,here are (
main lines you will more likely use:
+ ! line &green line'. 8uns all along &anta 7e )venue from Palermo to Pla;a de
.ayo &-uare < the 'athedral < 'asa 8osada Parliament Building.
+ B line &red line'. 8uns all along 'orrientes )venue from =illa 'respo to Puerto
.adero.
,he "us is called the (olectivo in Buenos )ires and there are hundreds of lines and the
main one you have to have in mind is Bus )ine *+,. It goes all the way straight along
&anta 7e )venue from Palermo and 8ecoleta to &an ,elmo and to 'aminito in a Boca.
.any people love trains and in Buenos )ires they are very useful for many workers
coming into the city from outside the capital in the north or west. 7or travelers, the only
line that is useful is the one going to #igre, inea .itre starting in 8etiro &tation in
>owntown Buenos )ires.
Public transportation is cheap in Argentina, coins are necessary for paying for tickets
on "oard with the other method "eing to "uy a "-B. card at a kiosk and to put enough
credit on it which also makes using pu"lic transportation even cheaper:
&u"way ? @ormal cost AB )rgentine Pesos which is around C&A 1,B1. &CBD cost
is AE,B1.
Bus ? @ormal cost AF )rgentine Pesos which is around C&A 1,F1. &CBD cost is

@ow, if you are active enough to enjoy wal$ing and bi$ing, Buenos Aires is a great
place to explore. Hou will save time and "e staying healthy at the same time. ,here is a
pretty extensive networ$ of bi$e lanes around the city which have "een improved for
safety measures. /ou can rent bi$es in Palermo for the day, as well as in 'ostanera &ur
3"ehind Puerto .adero6. &ome BIBs also offer free use of "ikes. Hou can get to almost
all the attractions and highlights of B) "y the "ike lanes and you can check this site to plan
your route:

*e do offer a walking tour on all of our Buenos )ires programs and we think it is the "est
way to discover the city. #his is my personal recommendation if planning a wal$ing
tour on your own, assuming you are in Palermo and you are willing to use public
transport:
!ave a coffee and walk around Palermo to Pla;a 'orta;ar and continue straight
along Borges &treet all the way to &anta 7e )venue. ,ake the &u"te Jreen ine at
Pla;a Italia station in the direction of 'atedral &tation and get off at the end of the
line.
!aving left the &u"te at 'atedral &tation, visit the 'asa 8osada Parliamentary
Building, the 'athedral, the 'a"ildo and Pla;a de .ayo &-uare. *alk a few more
"locks to 'afK ,ortoni, a very classic old "ar of this area, and well worth a visit.
Identify >efensa &treet and start walking along it in the direction of &an ,elmo. It
should "e around 41 "locks until you hit >orrego &-uare at the heart of &an ,elmo
where the flea market takes place on &undays. )lways keep looking on "oth sides
of the streets when crossing as, you will find lovely houses and shops.
If looking for a place to go at lunchtime, try a Brigada for a really good parrilla. If
not that hungry, drink a "eer or coke at the "ar in the corner of >orrego &-uare.
7rom &an ,elmo to 'aminito in a Boca you can walk 3around GB minutes6 and
visit the Boca Luniors 7oot"all .useum and &tadium on the way or take the ine
4B( "us 3on Paseo 'olon )venue, just a few "locks from the pla;a6.
=isiting a Boca and 'aminito on foot, you can also include a visit to the 'asa
Proa 7oundation and Muin-uela .artin .useum "efore taking the ine 4B( "us
