Kootenays Bikes Not Pipes Rally
Kootenays for a Pipeline Free BC is organizing a critical
mass bike ride to stop pipelines at noon on Saturday, June
14.
Te federal government is due to announce its decision
on the Enbridge pipeline soon. Te Saturday bike ride is
an easy way to show your opposition to bitumen pipelines.
Everyones invited to bring their bikes, kids, noise-
makers, signs and costumes for the ride through Nelson

Touchstones Nelson: Museum of Art and History is
looking for images to cover two hydro boxes located on
the Ward Street side of the gallery, as well as two other lo-
cations outside the building that they are considering. Tis
project is supported in part by the City of Nelsons Cultural
Development Committee (CDC).
According to Touchstones Nelson Executive Director
Leah Best, staf members and CDC members are looking
forward to seeing what comes in. Were very excited. says
Best, Weve got some great talent in the area, and Im sure
whatever the jury ends up picking will be amazing, and a
real improvement.
Te call is open to all residents of Nelson and the sur-
rounding area, including youth, students, and professional
and emerging artists. Work can be in any media that can be
translated into a digital image and wrapped onto a hydro
utility box, including painting, photography, collage, etc.
Tose whose entries are selected for use will be paid an
honorarium of $250 and given a one year individual mem-
bership at Touchstones Nelson. Te fnal selection will be
determined by a jury, with Touchstones Nelson reserving
the right of fnal approval of the images and designs used.

Guatemalan Fair Trade Pioneer
Selkirk College welcomes Mayan farmer Leocadia Jur-
acan to the Kootenay on June 12 for a presentation on free
trade in Guatemala.
Juracan is the coordinator of the Campesino Committee
of the Altiplano (CCDA) and is currently on a BC speak-
ing tour sponsored by the BC-Central America Support
Committee. His stop in Castlegar will be at the Mir Centre
for Peace and is part of the 2014 Peace Caf Series.
In Guatemala two per cent of the population owns 72
per cent of the land. Cofee is a major industry in the Cen-
tral American country and the estimated 400,000 peas-
ants who work the felds are most ofen mistreated. On
some of the farms, women make $2 a day and men $2.50
doing backbreaking labour for long hours.
One of the projects the CCDA spearheads is growing
fair trade cofee under the label of Caf Justicia. In his
presentation, Juracan will focus on the power of fair trade
to support sustainable land struggles, and the pressures
currently facing farmers in Guatemala with mega-de-
velopment projects such as hydro-electric dams.
Te June 12 Peace Caf Series presentation will take
place at 7 pm and admission is by donation. Juracan will
also be speaking in Kaslo on June 13 and Nelson on June
14 at the United Church (7 pm).

rescinded the city wide Water Quality Advisory
that was issued on June 2, 2014.
Turbidity levels in the Fort Sheppard Drive

COMMUNITY FUTURES CENTRAL KOOTENAY AGM:
Thursday, June 26, 3:30 at the Community Futures ofce
located at 201, 514 Vernon St, Nelson.
Ken died suddenly at his home in
Granisle, BC while mowing his lawn.
Being outdoors was important to Ken as
he enjoyed hunting, fshing and shooting
throughout his life.
Ken was born in Portage la Prairie,
Manitoba, and was raised in Nelson, BC. He
earned a forestry degree from UBC, after
which he spent a few years in Australia, fying. In this adventure, Ken
earned a twin engine rating. Ken lived most of his adult life in Smithers
and worked at the PIR sawmill. In the fall of 2007 he retired and moved
to his house in Granisle to spend more time outdoors in his various
pursuits.
Ken leaves behind his aunt Mary, cousins Bill, Robert and Cathy
Gowan, brother Frank Edey and sister-in-law Debbie Edey, and many
friends in Smithers and Granisle .
Ken will be cremated. A Celebration of Life service will be held in
Smithers on Saturday, June 14.

Summer Of Ceramics Coming
To Kootenay Studio Arts
If youve ever had an inkling to enter the world of cer-
amics, or want to expand your skills, Selkirk College is of-
fering a unique opportunity. Te Summer of Ceramics at
Kootenay Studio Arts will bring the styles and teachings
of four veteran clay artists to Nelson for a series of ceram-
ics workshops over the next two months. Te workshops
will unite creative individuals at all levels for both week-
end and week-long workshops. Te interactive courses
will be led by working artists who will exchange stories
and insights into their lives and creative practice.
Cathy Terepocki will run a two-day workshop on June
14 and 15 (9 am to 4 pm) that will teach a variety of print-
ing techniques like photo transfers, tissue transfers and
screen printing to create new surfaces on fnished work.
Originally from Ontario, Terepocki graduated with a fne
arts degree from the Alberta College of Art & Design in
2004. She runs a successful business selling function-
al ceramics as well as an extensive jewellery line sold at
shops and galleries throughout Canada.
Sunshine Cobb will ofer a hands-on workshop that
will motivate students to experiment with new forms and
methods of construction in a fve-day workshop that runs
from June 23 to 27 (9 am to 4 pm). Te course will be
geared toward creative expansion. Beginner, intermediate
and advanced students will use hand-building techniques
such as coil and pinch methods to generate a variety of
vessel forms. Cobb graduated with a MFA in Ceramics
from the Utah State University and is currently a long
term resident at the Archie Bray Foundation.
Te Summer of Ceramics wraps up with a fve-day
workshop from July 7 to 11 (9 am to 4 pm) where Adam
Field will demonstrate his methods for carving intricate

Sharing his experience of studying in Korea, Field will
teach new skills for mapping out and carving geometric
patterns, and will develop a new perspective on creating
and decorating functional pottery. Field currently works
out of Helena, Montana and his works are included in pri-
vate collections and kitchen cabinets internationally.
All workshop participants will interact and learn from
generous discussions about studio practice, aesthetics,
materials and ceramic history. Students will gain skills
and confdence to create work in their own voice in all of
the workshops. All skill levels are welcome.
