Summer Reading Program 2014
Every year we have three distinct programs; one for children, one for teenagers, and one
for adults. The overall theme changes from year to year, and this year is all about science!

The theme for this years program for
children 12 and under is Fizz, Boom, Read!
This program prepares children for success
by developing and practicing early language
skills. Fizz, Boom, Read! explores the
connection between science and reading
with fun and educational programs and incentive prizes. For more information about
reading goals and prizes, flip to page 4.

The theme for teens and young adults,
(ages 13-18) is Spark a Reaction!
We encourage teens to continue
developing their reading skills during the
summer by providing goals and incentives
for them. To find out more turn to page 4.

Literary Elements is the theme for adults
this year. This program provides motivation
for lifelong learning and encourages
families to read together. Find out more
details on page 6.

A majority of the incentives, drawing prizes, and special events are sponsored by the
Friends of the Westfield Library and several other community organizations. We couldnt
do it without them! For a list of all of this years sponsors, see Sponsors on page 2.
Westfield, IN The City of Westfield
has formed a Cultural Collaborative
made up of some of the best and
brightest minds in Westfield.
Comprised of business owners,
educators, government officials and other community leaders, the collaborative is designed
to gather citizen input and strategically plan the growth of the Westfield community.

The success of our community is dependent upon the input and collaboration of our
businesses, nonprofits and residents, Mayor Andy Cook said. By working together, we
can create a vibrant destination for both residents of Westfield and our visitors.

The mission of the Westfield Cultural Collaborative is to thoroughly plan and implement
the downtown Westfield Experience.

Key stakeholders will actively collaborate to consider Westfields history, its unique culture and resources and the
valuable input of its residents.

By engaging our citizens and business community on this important project, Westfield will be one step closer to
creating a community with a high quality of life and an even brighter future, City Council President Jim Ake said.

The Cultural Collaborative will host a series of public forums to seek input from the community and answer any
questions about the process. Information collected from these forums will be reviewed and compiled along with
community research data to create a Cultural Collaborative Action Plan. The findings and completed plan will be
presented to the City of Westfield and the public in the first quarter of 2015.

The dates for the Cultural Collaborative
Public Forums are:

June 12
th
from 12 p.m. 1 p.m. at the Westfield Friends Church (324 S Union Street). Participants are
encouraged to bring their own bag lunch.

June 19
th
from 6:30p.m. 7:30 p.m. at the Westfield Public Library (333 W Hoover Street).

Those not able to attend the forums can also provide anonymous input via an online survey at
www.westfield.in.gov/culturesurvey. There are also paper copies available at the library on the community
bulletin board in the lobby.

New Magazine Subscription
Thanks to a generous donation by Nancy Pfeifer, the Westfield Washington Public Library now has a
subscription to PieceWork magazine! PieceWork celebrates and expresses historic and ethnic fabric-related
handwork in stories and selected projects on quilting, knitting, crochet, embroidery, cross-stitch, basketry,
beadwork, needlepoint, lace making, dyeing, and other traditional crafts.

From early Colonial samplers to Japanese sashiko quilts to beaded Athapaskan dancing boots, handwork's
history is human history. The clothes that warm us, the linens that adorn our homes, the finery that lifts our
spiritsthese works have come from hands that tell us who we have been and who we are. Also, using our
hands to carry on handwork that reflects our history and culture is rhythmic and sustaining.

Heres whats in the most recent issue: May/June 2014
In this seventh annual, ever-popular lace issue, explore the history and magic
of lace. From 15th and 16th century Venetian monasteries to present day
Japan, discover articles and projects for knitted, tatted (both needle and
shuttle), bobbin, and crocheted lace. Also in this issue of PieceWork, youll
find instructions for an heirloom Irish crocheted christening bonnet, stunning
lacy knitted socks fit for a queen, a delicate tatted scarf, and much more!
Projects featured include:
Rachel Lace Shawl to Knit by Evelyn A. Clark
A Needle-Tatted Lace Edging and Corner to Make designed by Leisa ReFalo
Pine-Tree Stole: An Orenburg Classic to Knit by Galina A. Khmeleva
A Christening Bonnet to Irish Crochet by Maire Treanor
Queen Victoria's Stockings to Knit, A Modern Take by Debbie O'Neill
A Lacy Scarf to Shuttle-Tat by Tomoko Morimoto
Lacy Bridal Headpiece to Crochet by Theresa Cromyak
And more!
May 14, 2014

The renovation and expansion
project is now complete. There are a
few small things left to do but for the
most part everything is in its final
place. All regular library
programming has resumed. We are
working on an updated meeting
room policy for the Community
Room.

A new outdoor sign was installed.
New awnings for the main entrance
and the staff entrance have been
ordered and should be installed in
the next few weeks. The sign and
the awnings were partially funded by
the Friends of the Westfield Library.

The library board is starting to plan
the Grand Reopening event. We
hope to finalize the date at the June
board meeting.

The Spring property tax advance
was received. The final June
Settlement should be received by
the June board meeting.

Elements of Memoir Writing
Your story matters! This class will
start you with some important
elements of making literary art out of
your story. The class will define
memoir and what makes it different
from other kinds of writing. Also
covered are things to avoid in the
memoir, how story and real life work
together, and craft techniques from
the chapter to the paragraph to the
sentence. After the workshop, you
should feel better equipped to put
your story into writing for a public
audience.

Kip Robisch has a PhD in English
and has taught literature and
creative writing for more than 20
years. He has published a book of
literary scholarship, a number of
short stories and articles, and poetry.
He teaches for The Indianapolis
Writers Center and works as a

Elements of Tai Chi
Tai Chi is a traditional soft-style
Chinese martial art. Its practitioners
try to be like water yielding and
powerful at the same time. Tai Chi
can increase calmness, balance and
general well-being. Many, many
generations of people have enjoyed
and benefitted from Tai Chi. During
this introduction to Tai Chi, youll
hear about the history and
philosophy of the art, see it
performed, and youll learn a very
simple exercise for calming the mind.

Michael Heinz has been teaching Tai
Chi in the Indianapolis area since
1992. He holds Master-level
teaching certification from
Grandmaster William C.C.
Chen. Michael is an adjunct
professor at Butler University where,
in addition to Tai Chi, he teaches
classes in linguistics and Chinese
philosophy.

eligible for Medicare, or anyone with
interest in learning more about how
Medicare works.

Cheryl Wade from UnitedHealthCare
