TURKISH EDUCATION SYSTEM

Turkish education system is under the
supervision and control of the state, namely the
Ministry of National Education.
According to the Constitution of the Republic of
Turkey, everyone has the right to receive
education. Education is compulsory from ages 6
to 14 and free in state schools.
The country's primary schools currently have a
98 percent participation rate.
The academic year in Turkish education
institutions generally begins in the mid-
September or early October and continues to
May or early June. There is also a two-week
winter break in February.

FORMAL EDUCATION
1-Pre-Primary Education (3-5 year olds)
; involves the education of children in the age group of 3 to 5 who have not
reached the age of compulsory primary education, on an optional basis.

Summer Preschool

Summer school programme is an education
that covers the subjects which have importance and
priority in pre-primary programmes and implemented in
summer especially for children aged 60-66 months who
can not continue pre-primary education
Mobile Classroom

Aiming at developing pre-primary education,
mobile classroom is an implementation to institution based pre-primary
education for children of low-income families aged 36-66 months who
cannot attend pre-primary education institutions.

Mobile classroom project is carried out by General
Directorate of Basic Education for provincial education
directorates, municipalities and universities.


2- Primary Education Institutions
Primary School
Comprises 4 years
from 6 to 10 year olds
The compulsory primary school age involves in the age
group of 6 to 13. The enrollment of this age group starts
at the and month of September when child completed
the age of 5, and finishes at the end of the educational
year when child completed 13 and begins the age of 14.
Lower Secondary School
Comprises 4 grades
Compulsory
Starts from the 5th grade and ends with the 8th
grade.
At the end of 8 years, successful students go for
the Secondary education for 4 more years.
The purpose of the primary education is to
ensure that every child acquires the basic
knowledge, skills, behaviors, and habits to
become a good citizen, is raised in line with the
national moral concepts and is prepared for life
and for the next education level parallel to
his/her interests and skills.
3-Upper Secondary Education
4 years
Upper secondary education includes all
the teaching institutions, general
vocational and technical education
institutions with at least four year
compulsory formal or non-formal
education, based on primary and lower
secondary education.

General Secondary Education

It is a four-year compulsory educational process that prepares
students both for higher education and for the future according to
their interests, expectations and abilities in addition to equipping
them with world knowledge with an education based on primary
education.


Vocational and Technical Secondary Education

It is a four-year compulsory educational process that prepares
students both for higher education and for the future as well as for
an occupation and job fields according to their interests,
expectations and abilities in addition to equipping them with world
knowledge with an education based on primary education
Higher Education

Higher education includes all the
educational institutions which are based
on secondary education, and which
provide at least two years of higher
education.

Non-Formal Education

Non-formal education in Turkey is offered by a network
of training centers who are supervised by the Ministry of
National Education (MEB). Non-formal education
services aim to teach reading-writing, help to continue
education of students for finish their incomplete
education, teach balanced nutrition and a healthy life
style, teach people from various professions the
knowledge and skills they need to improve themselves,
and so on.
There is also Distance Higher Education which is offered
at the Open Education Faculty of Anadolu University.
This program lasts for 2 or 4 years.
