EPPING TOWN SHOW
Sunday 7th July 2013

Thousands of local people turned out on one
of the hottest days of the year for an action
packed Epping Town Showa year after the event was cancelled due to bad
weather. The event was formally opened by Eppings new Mayor, Councillor Will
Breare-Hall. Family fun was very much at the fore with a number of free activities
on offer. Dozens of local organisations were present including a number of local
sports groups. There was a fun fair, arena events from Upper Clapton Rugby
Club, Te-ashi Do Karate Club, Illusions Dance Academy, Academy Performing
Arts, Rascals Theatre School, Coopersale Hall School
Maypole Dancing Team, Ivy Chimneys Primary School
Dancing Team and races and tug of war between 4th
Epping Brownies and 4th Epping Cubs (Ash Pack).
Music was provided by Epping Forest Band. Eighteen
teams entered the charity wheelbarrow race, sponsored
by DJ Hunt Property with wheelbarrows provided by
Travis Perkins. A balloon release race by 414 Epping
and North Weald Air Training Corps concluded the fun.
The Town Show closed a successful 9 day Epping
Festival which offered something for everyone.

Welcome from the Town Mayor
Since the last edition of Talk About Epping weve enjoyed some glorious summer weather. After
the seemingly relentless rain of last year, the many local events that have taken place over the
past few weeks have been blessed with cloudless skies and blazing sunshine. I've had the
pleasure of attending a number of them, and am full of admiration for those whose commitment
to our community and helping others makes them a success. Two that stand out for me are the
'I Love Epping Day' and the Town Show. Large numbers of both Epping residents and visitors
enjoyed a range of entertainment provided by talented local people, and they afforded an
opportunity for everyone to learn more about the town and the impressive variety of clubs,
societies and charities it is home to. Events such as these remind us how important the
voluntary sector is so I encourage everyone who has a little time to spare to get involved in one
of our many local groups and organisations.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT INFORMATION
Public transport information relevant to Epping is available on the Town Council website (www.eppingtowncouncil.gov.uk)
under Epping Town Information / Public Transport. The website is updated as notification of changes are received.
Epping Town Council has launched an email media service to keep people up-to-date with its work.
Anyone can register free of charge to receive the councils media releases which will be sent out at the same time
as they are sent to the local media. Those that sign up for the service can expect to receive regular updates
about the Town Councils work in serving the local community. Using the email service is a great way for the
council to communicate with the public, to highlight important local issues, our meeting information, decisions
taken, and to encourage responses from local people.
To register for the free service, simply email eppingtowncouncilnews@gmail.com No email addresses will be
forwarded on and subscribers can ask to be removed from the circulation list at any time.
Annual canvass of electorsDid you ring, click or text in 2012?

If you did, many thanks - you were one of over 15,000 households with no changes to their details which used the
telephone, internet or text to confirm their electoral registration details. However, a further 20,000 households
COULD have used the automated responses but didn't.

The annual canvass of electors will start on 1 October this year (slightly later than usual) so watch out for
the form and deal with it as soon as it arrives.
Ian Willett, EFDC's Electoral Registration Officer commented
"In 2012 we introduced registration by telephone, internet and text. While I was pleased that many people did use
the new automated responses, I was disappointed that more households, which could have, didn't give it a try. I
would urge everyone, whose details are the same as last year, to use one of the automated responses. I tried it
and it's really quick and easy to use. You also get confirmation of your registration rather than wondering if a form
sent by post arrived in the office. The economics are simple. It costs 12p for an automated response whereas
posting the form back costs the Council 28p return postage plus admin processing costs. Rather than having
staff spending time on forms which could/should have been dealt with by internet, telephone or text they can
concentrate on dealing with queries or processing forms which have changes to the details. This makes much
better use of their time. This year, let's try and make registration by internet, telephone and text the norm for
households with no changes. Another way to help the Council save on costs is to register as soon as you receive
the form. Sending out reminders is a costly exercise especially where there are no changes to the
details. People think that because their details are the same they don't have to register. Yes you do - you have to

I love Epping Day
Saturday 29th June 2013
Following a soaking wet I love Epping Day last
year, this years event was soaked in sunshine!
Eppings Mayor Will Breare-Hall opened the event
and various local organisations and businesses
had stalls in the high street including Girl Guiding
Epping, The Dream Factory and The Copped Hall Trust. Bands played on the
piazza and singing was provided by the Epping Green based Community Gospel
Choir and Funky Voices. Visitors enjoyed an open day at St Johns Church (which
included a climb to the top of the tower where you could enjoy views of the
surrounding area).

Farewell to St Johns School
Saturday 6th July 2013
Thousands turned out on a very
hot day to say Farewell to St
Johns which will be replaced by
the new Epping St Johns School
building in September. The
farewell event was organised by
the schools PTA. Many students got the opportunity to spray paint their name onto the
old school building before it is demolished. Former staff also visited the school. The
event was officially opened by Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing.

Fraud Alert
A sophisticated type of fraud is on the rise across Essex where people are telephoned by
fraudsters claiming to be a police officer of from the bank. People are then tricked into
revealing their pin and handing over their bank card a courier.
There are simple steps you can take to avaoid falling victim to this type of crime :
DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR PIN NUMBER. DO NOT GIVE YOUR BANK CARD TO A
COURIER
If you suspect you have fallen victim of fraud or someone has attempted to defraud you
please dial Essex Police on 101.

Burglary and Hot Weather
This is just a brief reminder that the hot weather we are experiencing brings increased opportunity to the
creeper burglar. There is a strong inclination to throw windows wide open in this weather and, because it is so
hot at night, to leave those windows open when you go to bed. The burglar is aware of this and a summer rarely
goes by when we dont record a number of burglaries where entry to houses has been gained in this way. In
most cases it is OK to leave first floor windows open providing they are not above a flat roof or vulnerable in
some other way but leaving ground floor windows open when you retire upstairs to bed is asking for trouble. Also
be aware of the relief garden thief. He is the one that, while you are working in your front garden, goes in
through your open back door and relieves you of your cash and valuables. Please keep these in mind as we go

The Epping Society enjoyed a very successful day at the Epping Festival on
the 29tth June. At their stand opposite
St Johns Church, Epping Society
members spoke to Epping residents
and visitors to the town about the work
of the Society and issues facing the
town such as the Local Plan. The stand
also hosted mask painting and games for children, while Charlie Geddes led
two very popular guided historical walks along the High Street. The Society
welcomed new members who signed up to join and support the Epping
Societys activities. The following weekend the Society was in action at
Epping Town Show, once again talking to residents and visitors about its
work and welcoming new members.
The Epping Society is looking forward to further events this year to which
everyone in and around Epping is welcome to attend. The Society will be
hosting its first Family Quiz at St Johns Church Hall on Sunday 1st
Septembera fun event to which all ages are invited to come along. Richard
Morris, Verderer of Epping Forest will be the guest speaker at the Societys
next open meeting on Wednesday 18th September at St Johns Church.

Epping MP backs care in the community
Eleanor Laing was guest of honour at the official opening of
Home Instead Senior Care Epping Forest, held on the 21st June
at the Quaker House, Hemnall Street in Epping. The office is
based on the 2
nd
Floor of High Street but to enable older clients
and members of the community to join in the fun and celebra-
tions, the event was held at the fully accessible Quaker House in
Epping. Over 57 people attended in order to show their support
for new owner, Victoria Rigby, whose company specialises in
looking after older people in their own homes, they included
Caregivers, clients and members of the local community. Victoria
added, We had a really successful office opening celebration. I
was delighted and touched by the support for Home Instead in
Epping, in particular from Eleanor, who gave a lovely talk about
how important care is in the local community and her personal
experiences of finding care. In fact, she even spoke of carers
who looked after her loved ones still being on her Christmas card
list, so I know she genuinely understands what we do. Victoria
continued I started the business in December and Im really
proud of our fantastic team of caregivers who are actively chang-
ing the face of ageing in Epping through their professional, com-
passionate and caring natures. Building friendships is key, the
relationship between caregiver and client is crucial to ensuring
that clients feel safe and secure. Were really looking forward to
supporting older people in the Epping community. Ensuring we
do everything we can to enable them to stay at home for as long
as possible,
where they are
happy and com-
fortable. We want

Probus Cub of Epping
Some sixty four members and their lady guests attended the Ep-
ping Probus Ladies Summer Lunch at the Lindsey Street Com-
munity Association (LSCA) premises on 19th June 2012. On arri-
val, they were received by the Club President Edward Pinter pri-
or to an excellent three course luncheon. Club Member John
Batchelor then introduced the speaker Nick Anderson, a baker of
local standing who once had a bakery business in Epping High
Street and who, with his wife Jane, now runs the Mayfield Farm
Bakery and School in Old Harlow.
Nick explained that his family are from Devon, with the Dutch
surname Vooght. The family came to London in 1912 to open
the Hoxton Bakery in the East End where the business continues
to this day. His grand father went to sea, as a baker, with the
White Star Line sailing afar as Australia but eventually returning
to help with the family business. The bakery was partly under-
ground and continued baking bread during the blitz even when,
on one occasion, the building above was ablaze. In those days it
was the practice for housewives to cook the Sunday dinner in
the bakers ovens for a nominal fee, possibly a slice of meat or a
potato, a practice which still continues today in parts of the coun-
try.




Following a course in Hotel Management at Colchester, he
set up a bakery in a 200 year old cowshed (after suitable
conversion) at Redbourne in Hertfordshire. Following the
success of this business, Nick moved to the present site in
Old Harlow to establish the Mayfield Bakery and School
where he employs four full time bakers and sixteen support
staff. He uses local ingredients in his products eg. flour
from a local farmers and honey from Much Hadham. The
School holds master classes for professionals and several
well known London celebrities have attended. The busi-
ness has received the Essex Best Bakery Award and the
City of London Bakers Mark.
Nick then demonstrated bread making by kneading some
pre prepared dough and shaping loaves for baking; in reali-
ty, it takes some three hours to produce a loaf of bread.
Loaves can be prepared with a variety of flavours by mixing
with various ingredients eg. Stilton cheese, beetroot and
others. Finally Nick showed examples of bread from his
bakery, which were then distributed among those present.
Club member Ron Perryman then rose to propose a vote of
thanks to Nick for his very interesting talk especially re-
garding the early London connections of his family, and
also the excellent presentation which had been most in-
formative and educational. The meeting then accorded
Nick a resounding round of applause.

Epping (St. Johns) Brownies
Charity Run


On Wednesday 26

June the 4
th

Epping Brownies participated in a
sponsored charity run held at
Stonards Hill Recreational Ground.
The event was organised and lead on
the night by former Brownie Kathrine Foy. Kathrine en-
sured the 28 Brownies, and a few siblings, undertook fun
warmed-up exercises prior to the start of the run. Many
parents attended to help on the night with marshalling the
course, recording the number of laps completed, or even
ran themselves. The evening was rounded off with well
deserved refreshments and a raffle. A fantastic 575.90p
was raised for the Great Ormond Street Hospital .

Epping Art Society
The society meets on the first Friday of the month at the
Methodist Hall, Epping, from 7.30. until 10 p.m. This is always
a practical meeting with varied subjects for every meeting.
September 6th , Painting in the style of Fauvism, October 4th,
Preparing for the annual mosaic of a famous painting,
November 1st, Decorations for our Christmas Tree in St
John's Church. Members only 2.00. On the 2nd Wednesday
of every month there are talks about various aspects of
painting. The first of these on September 11th at Pelly Court,
7.30.p.m. for 8 p.m. will be ' A Celebration of Posters' by
Andrew Davies. On October 9th. Martin Smith will give a talk
about 'The Glasgow Boys and Scottish Colourists. Open to

of September at the Methodist Church
hall, from 7.30.p.m till 10.p.m.there will be a practical session.
The subject will be An Ism , Cubism, classicism etc.
Although Fridays are for members only, anyone thinking of
joining the Society is welcome to come to one of the Friday
meetings that are held monthly and join in or come to one of
the Wednesdays talks and demonstrations. At the Town
Festival the Society stall did a roaring trade providing all the
materials for drawing, painting and framing pictures for
children to paint their own pictures. There was an Art
Exhibition in the Council Offices of Art society members work,
where twenty one pictures were sold. New members are
always welcome to the society, either as painters or for those
that are interested in the talks about artists. The annual

WEA
The Loughton & Epping Branch of
the WEA will be running two courses
in Epping starting in September
2013. THE NATURAL HISTORY
OF RECENT & ANCIENT
WOODLANDS, a 10-week course,
will be held at the Jack Silley
Pavilion, Tidys Lane, Epping, on
Wednesday mornings 10am-12noon
starting on September 25
th
. The
tutor, Tricia Moxey, will examine the importance of ancient
woodlands and how the flora and fauna differ from more
recently planted areas and the seasonal changes. You are
always welcome to come to the first class of any of our
courses to see if you would like to join. The fee is 65.00 and
if you are on benefit or a low income you may be able to get
help with fees. HIGH VICTORIAN WRITINGS, a 20-week
course mainly studying North & South by Mrs. Gaskell,
Vanity Fair by William Thackeray, Goblin Market by
Christina Rosetti and The Scholar Gipsy by Matthew Arnold
will be held at the United Reformed Church in Lindsey St,
Epping, starting on Thursday 26
th
September. The tutor is
Adrian Eckersley. This is a 20 week course meeting again
after Christmas on January 16
th

Some 900 walkers painted Harlow pink and lit up Saturday
night in flashing bunny ears for the sixth annual Midnight
Walk and are on course to raise around 75,000 for St Clare
Hospice. The hot balmy evening was only matched by the hot
and barmy walkers who relished the chance to dress up in
tutus, sparkly tops, fluorescent wigs and embrace the
facepaints with gusto for a good cause. Even broken arms
and legs - accidents before the night rather than during! -
could not stop some walkers from taking part, choosing either
a 5k or 10k walk along the streets, paths and subways of the
town on a circular route that began and ended at the Water
Gardens. But the high jinks and party atmosphere was halted
for one minute before the 10.30pm start as 900 walkers
acknowledged a moments silence in memory of all the
people they were raising money for: the grandparents, the
parents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, friends and work
colleagues who had been touched by St Clare Hospice and
its services over the years. With registrations, donations and
sponsor money pledged, St Clare Hospice is confident it will
receive around 62,500 but is confident that it will still reach
its 75,000 target enough to run the entire Hastingwood
Inpatient Unit for 19 days. Events fundraiser Grace Malek,
who organised the event with the help of 100 volunteers,
including 65 marshalls on the night, said: If every one of our
walkers raised 65 in sponsorship, we will reach our 75k
target and that
would make this
year the most
successful
Midnight Walk to
date. And, if we
reach that amount,
it will mean that
since the Midnight
Walks began six years ago, walkers will have raised 1/2
million which would be incredible. Participants each received
a goody bag containing their hot pink T shirt, water and
snacks provided by the Water Gardens, and toiletries
provided by Visionary Soap Company and Bayliss & Harding.

Parkinsons UK Harlow and District Branch
Last month, 30 of our members, with friends came on a visit
to Southend with a fish and chip meal. A trip to the theatre
added to the enjoyment. We get frequent visits from our
Community Police Officers and they explain any issues awe
may have in our area. Recently we had a workout session of
laughter, yoga, with Jennifer Johnson. This was so refreshing
and quite catching. We all went home with big smiles on our
faces. In October we look forward to a speaker from the
Essex Police Marine Unit. I am sure we shall here some
interesting stories on this. Our club is rather unique in that we
meet EVERY week on Wednesdays 11-3pm. A hairdressers,
chiropodist, plus our Parkinsons Nurse are available to help
and chat with us. We have members coming from across a
wide area, Buckhurst Hill, Loughton, Epping, Nazeing, Ongar
and of course Harlow. We would love to welcome you too!
