(past continuous
negative)

To make a negative sentence in the past continuous tense, we use -mi, -mı, -mu, -mü
between the stem of the verb and the past continuous tense marker -yordu followed by
the personal pronoun ending.

• Kahvaltı yapmıyordum.
• Serhat ders çalışmıyordu.

Structure: verb + -mi, -mı, -mu, -mü, + yordu + personal pronoun ending

Negative
Ben gel-mi-yordum. I wasn’t coming.
Sen gel-mi-yordun. You weren’t coming.
O gel-mi-yordu. S/he/It wasn’t coming.
Biz gel-mi-yorduk. We weren’t coming.
Siz gel-mi-yordunuz. You weren’t coming.
Onlar gel-mi-yorlardı. They weren’t coming.

Use:

1- Verbs ending in a syllable having -i or -e are followed by mi + yordu and the


personal pronoun ending:

Kenan müzik dinlemiyordu. (Kenan wasn’t listening to music.)


Çocuk yemek yemiyordu. (The child wasn’t eating.)

2- Verbs ending in a syllable having -ı or -a are followed by mı+ yordu and the
personal pronoun ending:

Ayşe sana bakmıyordu. (Ayşe wasn’t looking at you.)


Biz dün gece ders çalışmıyorduk. (We weren’t studying last night.)

3- Verbs ending in a syllable having -o or -u are followed by uyordu and the personal
pronoun ending:

Mehmet, bu şehirde oturmuyordu. (Mehmet wasn’t living in this city.)

4- Verbs ending in a syllable having -ö or -ü are followed by mu+ yordu and the
personal pronoun ending:

Dün parkta yürümüyorduk. (We weren’t walking in the park yesterday.)
