13 -memeli / -mamalı (in present simple negative)

We add -memeli / -mamalı to the verb to say that something is not necessary or the wrong
thing to do, so it should not / must not be done.

• Çok fazla yemek yememelisin.

• Derse geç kalmamalısınız.
• Sigara içmemelisin.

Structure: verb + -memeli / -mamalı + personal pronoun ending

Positive

Ben koşmamalıyım I mustn’t/shouldn’t run. gitmemeliyim I mustn’t/shouldn’t go.

Sen koşmamalısın You mustn’t/shouldn’t run.
O koşmamalı S/He/It mustn’t/shouldn’t run.
Biz koşmamalıyız We mustn’t/shouldn’t run.
Siz koşmamalısınız You mustn’t/shouldn’t run.
Onlar koşmamalılar They mustn’t/shouldn’t run.
gitmemelisin You mustn’t/shouldn’t go.
gitmemeli S/He/It mustn’t/shouldn’t go.
gitmemeliyiz We mustn’t/shouldn’t go.
gitmemelisiniz You mustn’t/shouldn’t go.
gitmemeliler They mustn’t/shouldn’t go.

Use:

1- If the last syllable of the verb ends in a, ı, o, u, we add –mamalı to the verb:

Bu fimi kaçırmamalıyım. (I mustn’t/shouldn’t miss this film.)

Bu fimi kaçırmamalısın.
Bu fimi kaçırmamalı.
Bu fimi kaçırmamalıyız.
Bu fimi kaçırmamalısınız.
Bu fimi kaçırmamalılar.
(You mustn’t/shouldn’t miss this film.)
(S/He/It mustn’t/shouldn’t miss this film.)
(We mustn’t/shouldn’t miss this film.)
(You mustn’t/shouldn’t miss this film.)
(They mustn’t/shouldn’t miss this film.)

2- If the last syllable of the verb ends in e, i, ö, ü, we add –memeli to the verb:

Sınavda kopya çekmemeliyim. (I mustn’t/shouldn’t cheat in the exam.)

Sınavda kopya çekmemelisin.
Sınavda kopya çekmemeli.
Sınavda kopya çekmemeliyiz.
Sınavda kopya çekmemelisiniz.
Sınavda kopya çekmemeliler.
(You mustn’t/shouldn’t cheat in the exam.)
(S/He/It mustn’t/shouldn’t cheat in the exam.)
