-e rağmen (in spite of; despite)

-mesine rağmen (in spite of the fact that)

-e/-a rağmen is used to to say ‘without taking any notice of or being influenced by’. It corresponds to
English ‘despite’ or ‘in spite of’:

Yağmura rağmen futbol oynadılar.

(They played football despite the rain.)

Hakan, sakatlığına rağmen çok iyi oynadı.

(Hakan played very well despite his injury.)

Uyarıma rağmen denize girdiler.

(They went swimming despite my warning.)

Mete, ısrarımıza ragmen sinemaya gitmek istemedi.

(Mete didn’t want to go to the cinema despite our insistence.)

-mesine/-masına rağmen is added to the stem of the verb and means ‘despite the fact that’. The suffix -
mesine changes according to the subject.

Ben ...-meme/-mama rağmen ‘Despite the fact that I ...’

Sen ...-mene/-mana rağmen ‘Despite the fact that you ...’
O ...-mesine/-masına rağmen ‘Despite the fact that s/he/it ...’
Biz ...-memize/-mamıza rağmen ‘Despite the fact that we ...’
Siz ...-menize/-manıza rağmen ‘Despite the fact that you ...’
Onlar ...-mesine/melerine rağmen ‘Despite the fact that they ...’
-masına/malarına rağmen

Đyi oynamamıza rağmen maçı kaybettik.

(We lost the match despite the fact that we played well.)

Çok çalışmama rağmen sınavda başarısız oldum.

(I failed the test despite the fact that I studied hard.)

Onları uyarmama rağmen sigara içmeye devam ettiler.

(They continued to smoke despite the fact that I warned them.)

Benden özür dilemesine rağmen Mehmet’i affetmeyeceğim.

(I won’t forgive Mehmet despite the fact the apologizes to me.)

Note that rağmen is commonly used to produce expressions like ‘her şeye rağmen = despite everything’
and ‘buna rağmen = despite this/that’.

Her şeye rağmen Đstanbul’u seviyorum.

(I love Đstanbul despite everything.)

Đki kazak giydim. Buna rağmen, çok üşüdüm.

(I wore two pullovers. Despite that, I was so cold.)
