(dative case)
We add -e/-a to the noun to indicate to whom/which something is given. The ending -e/-a
corresponds in meaning to English to and for. But some other English prepositions like in,
into, at, on, onto etc. can also correspond in meaning to the dative case in Turkish.
• okula = to school
• işe = to work.
• İzmir’e = to İzmir
• pazara = to the market
Structure: words ending in a syllable containing a, ı, o, u, take the ending -a while the words
ending in e, i, ö, ü take the ending -e. İstanbul’a, köye, sınıfa, tatile
Use:
2- If the word ends in a vowel, then we insert y between the dative case marker and the
word.
3- It is used to make question words like Nereye = ( to) Where? and Kime = (to) Whom?.
4- It is used with post-positions like -e/-a doğru = towards, -e/-a kadar = until/as far as.
Dün gece saat 3’e kadar ders çalıştım. Otobüs Hatay’a kadar gidiyor.
(I studied until 3 o’clock last night.) (The bus is going as far as Hatay.)
