(ablative case)
We add -den/-dan/-ten/-tan to the noun to indicate a starting point of a physical movement.
This ending corresponds in meaning to English from.

• okuldan = from school

• işten = from work.
• İzmir’den = from İzmir
• pazardan = from the market

Structure: words ending in one of the consonants f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p take the ending -ten/-tan.
Otherwise, we should use -den/-dan. İngiltere’den, evden, sınıftan, dersten, etc.

ofisten kitaptan köyden üniversiteden
Leeds’ten mutfaktan İstanbul’dan televizyondan

Use:

1- It’s added to nouns to indicate a starting point of a physical movement:

Anna, Londra’dan trenle geliyor.

(Anna is coming from London by train.)

Kardeşim okuldan henüz dönmedi.

(My brother hasn’t returned from school yet.)

2- It’s added to nouns to indicate the source, cause, agent, or basis:

Bugün okuldan telefon ettiler.

(They phoned from school today.)

Babamdan hiç miras almadım.

(I haven’t inherited anything from my father.)

Yorgunluktan ölüyorum.
(I am dying from fatigue.)

3- It is used to make the question word Nereden = From where?

and Kimden = From whom?.

A: Nereden geliyorsun? (Where are you coming from?)

B: Okuldan geliyorum. (I am coming from school.)

A: Haberi kimden aldın? (Who did you get the news from?)
B: Haberi Hakan’dan aldım? (I got the news from Hakan.)
