Introduction 1
PostScript files
RIP
Description of the Unit and its
Functions
The Herkules PRO is a high-precision laser recorder
based on the in-drum principle and is used to expose
PostScript files.
The PostScript files are converted by the connected RIP
(Raster Image Processor) and are sent to the Herkules.
The Herkules PRO has two Speedway interfaces for the
connection of 2 RIPs (RIP 50, RIP 60, DeltaRIP) in any
desired combination.

The files are exposed on film or on paper in daylight
operation. A laser diode whose rays are in the visible
red spectrum is used as the light source.
The exposure format of 558 mm x 750 mm or of 558 mm
x 735 mm (with the punch option) corresponds to the
most important formats in printing.
Herkules PRO - Operation 1-3
1 Introduction
Area imagesetter
Recording principle
The Herkules PRO is an area imagesetter. The recording
beam does not record the composition work character for
character but instead moves line for line over the entire
width of the material.
This recording process requires that the PostScript files
are converted to image dot files (pixel files) by the KIP
before exposure begins. The number of image dots
(pixels) per centimeter (lines/cm) or dots per inch (dpi)
depends on the resolution selected.
The laser in the optical head emits a laser beam which is
modulated (lightened/darkened) according to the video
data transferred.
The laser beam, formed correspondingly in the optical
head, is deflected via a rapidly rotating mirror.
The deflected beam of the optical system which moves in
axial direction exposes the photographic material line by
line.

Introduction 1
Operational sequence in
the Herkules
The photographic material to be exposed is transported
out of the supply cassette into the exposure mold and is
held in position by a vacuum.
Following this, the photographic material is exposed in
the way previously described.
The exposed photographic material is then transported
out of the exposure mold into the take-up cassette. In this
way, several exposures processes can take place in
succession.
After the photographic material has been cut, the take-up
cassette must be removed and the exposed material
developed.

If an online automatic film processor is connected, The
photographic material can be cut by a cutting command
after every material feed. If there is no cutting command,
the photographic material is automatically cut after the
max. galley length has been reached. Exposed data are
not cut. The photographic material is transported to the
online automatic film processor via a transport channel.
Herkules PRO - Operation 1-5
1 Introduction
Punch option
There are three punch system options available in the
Herkules PRO:
the "punch at the short side of the format" (side punch)
and
two "punches at the long side of the format" (head
punch and foot punch).
However, since there is a large number of different
register systems, customer-specific punch systems can
be installed in the Herkules PRO.
Three standard punch systems are available, each of
them as head and side punch:
- Bacher Control 2000
- Stoesser
- Grapho Metronic

Operational Components of the
Herkules PRO

Herkules PRO - Operation 1-7
1 Introduction
Notes on Operation of the
Herkules PRO with Two RIPs
In order to use the system to its full potential, the data
flow must be organized in such a way that the capacity
of both RIPs is utilized as equally as possible.
There may be cutting waste (especially in the collect
mode), depending on the material width and the size of
the page.
During production, both of the RIPs must be working
in the same operating mode:
- If the collect mode is activated at one of the RIPs, the
other one should also work in the collect mode (de
pending on the respective production procedure).
Different punch formats are permitted.
A few special functions must be performed twice or re
quire special attention:
- Generally, operations in the Utility should only be
performed when the other RIP is not sending expo
sure data to the recorder.
- RIP 60 operations and test jobs may not be per
formed if the other RIP is not activated.
- Light, filter and focus tests must only be performed
once even if the RIPs differ from each other. The test
results must, however, be entered into the
corresponding menu of the other RIP.
- Calibration tests must be performed at both RIPs if
the RIPs are different (RIP 50, RIP 60 or DeltaRIP).
The results must be entered at both RIPs.
- Both RIPs must use the same material names. If the
material is changed, the new material name must be
entered at both RIPs.
1-8 Edition March 1996
Introduction 1
- If the RIP which is driving the Herkules PRO is not
functioning properly, this RIP must be restarted
and/or the RIP-Herkules PRO connection must be
canceled (refer to page 5-31}.
Special Features of the
Herkules PRO NP
The Herkules PRO NP [NP = Newspaper) is an
imagesetter which is especially suited for the
requirements of newspaper printing houses:
Max. photographic material width: 620 mm
Max. exposure width: 610 mm (with side punch
595 mm.
Resolutions: 500, 666, 800, and 1000 pixels/cm
(1270, 1693, 2032, 2540 dpi).
Standard scanning line length: 558 mm.
When a head punch is installed with a distance of 8 or
10 mm from the centre of the punch hole to the start of
exposure, the scanning line length increases to 562,5
mm. When a special adapter for the foot punch is
installed, the scanning line length increases to 570
mm.
Herkules PRO - Operation 1-9
1 Introduction
In Chapter 5, Operation, the operation of the take-up
cassette is only shown with the Herkules PRO . In the case
of the Herkules PRO NP with the 620 mm take-up
cassette, the output area is limited to the right by an
adapter.
As in the case of the Herkules PRO, the following standard
punch systems, as a head punch and a side punch, are
offered:
- Bacher Control 2000
- Stoesser
- Grapho Metronic
These punches are constructed for a width of 620 mm.
When using photographic material with widths of <620
mm, punching will always be centered, if the
photographic material has been aligned to the center
during insertion in the supply cassette.
It is also possible to install customized punching systems.

1-10 Edition March 1996

Introduction 1
Special Features of the
Herkules PRO M
The Herkules PRO M (M =Modular) can be extended to
become the Herkules PRO. The following characteristics
are different from the Herkules PRO:
Max. exposure format 540 x 558 mm.
No side punch as the photographic material is inserted
at the center.
Supply cassette for material widths up to 762 mm (can
only be used up to 550 mm) or supply cassette up to a
material width of 460 mm. When the photographic
material is inserted, it must be aligned to the center.
Take-up cassettes for material widths up to 550 mm,
use with centered alignment.
In Chapter 5, Operation, the operation of the take-up
cassette is only shown with the Herkules PRO . In the case
of the Herkules PRO M the output area is narrower and
only one take-up cassette can be inserted at the center for
the maximum material width of 550 mm.

Barcode reader
Closed system
Special Features of the Herkules PRO
in the HerkulesPRO/Advantage
The Herkules PRO is also part of the "intelligent" image-
setting system HerkulesPRO/Advantage. Further
components of this system are:
HerkulesPRO/Advantage automatic film processor

Up to two PostScript RIP 50
A barcode reader is used to record the properties of the
photographic material. These material properties, the
size of the exposed page and the ratio of exposed area to
unexposed area form the basis for controlling the amount
of replenisher in the film processor.
Complete process control is possible with this closed
system:
From the moment when the photographic material is
inserted into the Herkules PRO to the moment when the
developed photographic material is output at the film
processor.
This system offers you the following advantages:
Consistently high quality
Simple operation
Low operating costs
High productivity
Less harmful to the environment due to reduced use of
liquids.

Notes on the Photographic Material
and the Supply Cassette
The supply cassette can hold up to 60 mof photographic
material (depending on the thickness of the photographic
material). Photographic material in either darkroom or
daylight packing can be used.
An unused supply cassette filled with photographic
material must be protected from strong light:
Using the lower gear wheel on the supply cassette, re
wind the photographic material behind the curtain of
the material exit slot. For this, the supply cassette must
be on an even surface so that the gear wheel is free to
be moved.
Put the supply cassette into a cabinet and close the
cabinet in order to avoid pre-exposure.

3. If the head punch or foot punch has been installed, the
lateral disk of the material shaft must be adjusted to the
desired photographic material width so that the
photographic material is aligned accordingly with the
punch (centered alignment also in the case of the
Herkules M). To do this, loosen the knurled screws on
the lateral disk, push it into the desired width and screw
the knurled screws back on tightly.
Note: The next steps take place in a darkened room or in
darkroom lighting as per manufacturer's instructions.
4. Unpack the photographic material in the darkroom.
5. Slide the roll of filmonto the shaft and push it up against
the lateral disk.

Note: Push the photographic material against the lateral
disk with the utmost care (lateral guide) as otherwise
repeating accuracy cannot be guaranteed.
6. Push the clasp nut up against the roll of film and screw
lightly against its retaining rings (ATTENTION: Left-hand
thread).
The retaining ring of the photographic material must
correspond to the drawing (please see photographic

3. Close the cover of the take-up cassette compartment.

Notes on Emptying the Take-up Cassette
When photographic material galleys are quickly
extracted by hand, powerful electrostatic charges are
produced in the photographic material and take-up
cassette, especially when air humidity values are low.
The results of this are visible flashes on the photographic
material and powerful electric shocks if the take-up
cassette is touched after the photographic material has
been removed.
For this reason, the automatic online processor must
have a cassette compartment whose pull-out rails are
grounded (grounding springs as are in the Herkules PRO
which bridge the alluminite area).
The lever at the side of the take-up cassette must be
pushed in the direction of the gear wheel so that the
photographic material can easily be extracted from the
take-up cassette (in the darkroom). This opens the
cassette outlet.

Eliminating Photographic Material
J amming in the Take-up Cassette
The take-up cassette must be opened if the photographic
material was incorrectly fed into the supply cassette or if
it buckled there.
Note: The take-up cassette should be opened in the dark
roomwithout any light so that it is still possible to develop
the photographic material if required.
1. Unscrew the four knurled screws and put the lid of the
take-up cassette to one side.

2. Take the incorrectly fed material out of the take-up
cassette.
3. Place the lid back on the take-up cassette and screw the
four knurled screws back on tightly.
4. Insert the take-up cassette again (please refer to page
5-11, section Inserting the Take-up Cassette).
Photographic material jamming is most commonly
caused by the insertion of a take-up cassette which has
not been emptied. It must then be emptied as described
here.
