Towards partial fulfillment of requirement for the award of

Degree of MASTER of MECHANICAL ENGINEERING of
GANPAT UNIVERSITY. This is the record of candidates own work
carried out by them under our supervision & guidance. In our
opinion the work submitted has reached a level required for being
accepted for exam. The matter embodied in this seminar has

Abstract
In UM the tip of the tool vibrates at low amplitude and at high frequency. This
vibration transmits a high velocity to fine abrasive grains between tool and
the surface of the work piece.material removed by erosion with abrasive
particles. The abrasive grains are usually boron carbides. This technique is
used to cut hard and brittle materials like ceramics, carbides, glass, precious
stones and hardened steel.Ultrasonic Machining - Cutting action is
accomplished with an abrasive slurry which is driven by a tool vibrating at
high frequency. The tool is the exact shape of the desired shape to be cut
into the work.

ULTRASONIC MACHINING (UM)

• In UM the tip of the tool vibrates at low amplitude and at high frequency. This
vibration transmits a high velocity to fine abrasive grains between tool and
the surface of the work piece.

• material removed by erosion with abrasive particles.

• The abrasive grains are usually boron carbides.

• This technique is used to cut hard and brittle materials like ceramics,
carbides, glass, precious stones and hardened steel.

• Ultrasonic Machining - Cutting action is accomplished with an abrasive slurry

which is driven by a tool vibrating at high frequency. The tool is the exact
shape of the desired shape to be cut into the work.

• Applications

• slots, blind holes, irregular shapes, and through holes.

• Ultrasonic Machining

• Main uses of USM:

• - Welding plastics (package sealing)

• - Wire-bonding (IC chips)

• - Machining brittle materials

Application

• * State any useful application of USM.

• USM can be used far drilling, grinding, milling on all conducative and non

conductive matrial.

• Mainly used to machined glass, cyramics, minerals stones, centered carbide

and tungeston.

• Can be used pearsing of dyes and far parting off,and far blanking operation.

8
• Can be used to machined semi conductors and ferrites

• USM also used in medical technology.

Limitations

• MRR is law compare to conventional machining.

• The depth of the hole is max. possible as 2.5 times of the dia. Of hole (L\D
ratio).

• Sharp corners are difficult to obtained.

• The bottom of the cavity is not flate.

• Accuracy may be lost, if the tool under goes luteral vibrations.

• Power consumption is high.

• Depth of cut are relatively shallow(25 to 40 mm)
